Portrait
My son used a charcoal portrait I did of him as his avatar for a rock-climbing website. His climbing friends noticed it and asked him about it. He casually told them, “Yeah, my mom’s an artist.” Then on guy in particular got very excited and asked him a few more questions. It turns out that he and some other folks had seen a portrait of Son (done when he was a child) in a house they were staying at. He had been baffled at the time to see a portrait of a classmate at a much younger age.
I laughed so much. Thinking of someone coming across portraits that I did years ago, recognizing the model, and being so baffled. How do you get to be an artist’s model at age 8? Well, it helps if your mom is an artist.

Light and different light
I’ve been working on a drawing that involves a blacksmith lit by a cool light source on one side and the firelight from the forge on the other side, and I’m losing my mind over it (in a good way.) One of the best photos I’ve ever used for a light study. EeeeEEEE! (There are also 5,348 bricks and stones making up the forge, so there’s that) But mainly it’s very very fun.

Maria Lassnig | You or Me? 2005
Painted when Lassnig was 86 years old, You or Me? (Du oder Ich) was one of a series of Nachtbilder (night pictures) among her drastic era. Rife with visual puns, Lassnig bares herself to the viewer in a moment of confrontation, forcing the passive spectator to become an active participant in her ultimatum.
