I watched jan misali’s video about Homestuck a few times, and it’s got me thinking.

I’ve often seen people talk about negative examples of the ways fandoms tend to treat characters differently from canon. The common examples being “why has this random [probably white] [probably male] character with two lines become the fandom darling????” to “this character mentioned french fries once. she has non-potato based examples of her personality!” But people don’t often talk about positive examples?

For context: I only ever got up to the beginning of act 6 of homestuck. I never actually got up to the bit with Mituna in it. My first introduction to him was fandom.

Now, it’s totally possible that the section of fandom I ran into was unusual in it’s level of, uh, good Mituna characterisation/opinions? But he was treated as an actual character, and not a joke. A lot of the time, there was an exploration of how having a TBI sucked, but it was usually [wiggle hands] from the inside view? It was “it must suck for people who have a TBI, how pitiably inspirational,” it was “habing a TBI is, personally, sO INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING.”

So, I don’t know why I was surprised when I found out how Hussie wrote him in canon, but, uh, I was? I had gotten used to the fandom interpretation, and gone “presumably people have fleshed him out a bit more than he was in canon, but he surely wasn’t purely a joke.”

Anyway: even if fandoms some time take really weird interpretations of characters, at least sometimes they take offensive joke characters and turn them into sympathetic characters with personalities and motivations.

honestly i’m not particularly wild about all the goncharov content for its own sake. but the phenomenon itself is insane and i feel like i’d be missing out if i wasn’t at least archiving a couple posts

I hc Louie as genderfluid! His ID will range from male to male-aligned nonbinary to agender, but on very few occaisions he'll be feeling female-aligned nonbinary! His pronouns are either he/him or they/them, though his need or care for correcting anyone on them depends largley on the person/situation. As for titles, it also tends to vary (for instance, Ty will swap between using terms to describe him like "boyfriend" or "partner" and "husband" or "spouse") though he consistently considers himself a "businesseprson" and not a "businessman"

And, as far as flags go, he prefers the genderqueer flag to the genderfluid one because it has green in it lmao

Louie never really planned on explaining his identity to his family, but Huey noticed him reposting some #relatable memes about being nonbinary on social media and approached him to talk about it. Something along the lines of "have you been scared to tell us?" to which Louie just shrugs and goes "nah, it just takes too long to explain".

Huey, I think, is naturally just fascinated by and interested in learning about different orientations and identities. He likes understanding the world and keeping up with the things we're still figuring out. And I imagine he enjoys knowing words and labels to accurately describe things. So when he manages to convince Louie to explain his identity to him, he absorbs it whole-heartedly. He does some research and learns about genderfluidity and comes to Louie excitedly like "SO I may not know exactly how youre feeling, but I DO have a word for it!!!"

Louie likes knowing there's a one-word way to label exactly how he's feeling, but he's also smart enough to know that just giving most people one word isn't going to accurately convey to them what's going on with him. He COULD explain it, but, eh, he's lazy. So when he decides to come out to his family, he drags Huey with him, clears his throat, and promptly tells everyone that Huey's gonna come out for him. Ah, well, at least it's on-brand for Louie to be too lazy to come out. And so Huey gladly infodumps.

Omg, I feel you with the "everyone convincingly says Hawks will die" xD Heck, even when I wasn't as emotionally invested in Hawks (e.g. pre-his confrontation with Twice), I wanted him to live just out of spite to everyone else. We can only cross our fingers now, lol.

awww well welcome to the “worrying about hawks” club, anon! i’ve been nervously wringing my hands over his safety since the beginning of the PLF arc so i am beyond ready for him to be outta there and (hopefully) out of commission for a while so i can sleep easy. maybe he can head on over to wherever all might’s been hiding out this whole time. and yes i would like people to stop arguing in favour of his death lmao i can only take so much ;_;
