Maybe a hot take but I genuinely think everyone should shut the fuck up about Wan Wan Games if you're only ever going to bring them up to discuss Game Grumps adjacent drama. They've already made it plenty clear how they feel about being used like that. If you care about them as much as you claim to, then talk about their work and contributions to that corner of internet pop culture, sure. Otherwise? Shut the fuck up about them forever.
Sapphic Dynamic where the popular queen bee type is hopelessly in love with the weirdo girl that runs Anime Club. She's so down on herself, writing in her diary "Erin is so cool. She can beat Super Mario Brothers in under five minutes, she learned Japanese to read imported manga, and she runs an Anime Club even though nobody shows up. She's committed to that club longer than I've committed to a hair style. I just know about clothes and makeup, she'd be so bored by me. Oh what would I do for her attention?"
Her cheerleader friends are supportive, like "Are you kidding, girl? You played Sonic on your iPhone once! She's not out of your league!" but she still doubts if she'd be enough to keep up with Erin's zest for life.
"I went to Paris over Summer break, like some normie loser. Erin spent the entire Summer decompiling an abandonware point-and-click Nancy Drew game so she could port it to her Android phone. It's hopeless, she'd get bored of me in a week!"
people on this site genuinely talk like "it's so hard to get people to realize misogyny is a current serious problem ruining lives. now if you'll excuse me i need to go tell a trans man to kill himself for trying to get people to realize misogyny is a current serious problem that is ruining his life and the lives of other trans men" we have learned nothing at all from the mistakes of second wave feminism literally nothing at all.
like this attitude is literally just "can't you understand that its so rude and selfish and privileged of you, someone who has literally never been included in feminist discussions of misogyny as a result of systemic oppression that feminism has traditionally not questioned, to expect us to include you instead of using the discussion of misogyny as an opportunity to wallow in our own perfect absolute victimhood?????" and i feel like anyone who throws around the word intersectionality should understand immediately why that echoes basically every internal problem feminists have had.
& like i DO agree with the op post too. misogyny is a real and current problem and it is no less real and current in leftist spaces than in conservative ones, nor any less in queer spaces than in heteronormative ones. but when you talk like this & when these (third screenshot) are the kinds of people engaging with your post, i'm sorry but it feels like you are, in the grand tradition of enemy feminisms, using the issue of misogyny not primarily as a chance to fight injustice and support victims of this kind of injustice, but rather to construct an identity as a victim of this injustice that legitimizes your voice while also policing that identity in order to delegitimize other's voices, along pre-existing lines of visibility and erasure and power and suppression.
emphasizing how you are a WOMAN and how this is something WOMEN experience and MEN (even men who are known to be profoundly shaped by being classed as women and having bodies perceived as female) need to SHUT UP about it reflects a need for the discussion of misogyny to centered around you and your experiences and getting to have a voice amongst voices like yours. if it makes you uncomfortable that discussions of misogyny aren't only and exclusively about the kind of misogyny you and others like you (however that is being conceived), that in fact other people's experiences with misogyny may reveal layers to misogyny that you are not perfectly affected by - perhaps the problem is located more in internalized cissexism and racism and classism etc. you need to realize that talking about transmisogyny or misogynoir doesn't make your feminism intersectional when you fundamentally do not think intersectionally and act with hostility towards intersectional feminism that causes you discomfort.
its patently absurd to act like trans men (or trans women, and nonbinary people) aren't immensely victimized by misogyny, or that being trans does not invite even more aggressive forms of misogyny. trans men and trans women and nonbinary/genderqueer/gnc people talking about how they are affected by misogyny does not hurt you and we are also not fucking peripheral to how misogyny functions. if you don't include trans people in your discussion of misogyny its gonna be dogshit.
for the lovely lovely deafies out there who want to get involved in direct action you absolutely 100% cannot ever bring a hearing aid or cochlear implant with bluetooth to any direct action. bluetooth devices all carry a unique signal that can be used to identify you if it's picked up at a direct action. go with a [more] hearing buddy and communicate in sign language. if you don't mutually know a sign language then come up with gestures. do not risk your freedom because you want to have your hearing aid/cochlear implant at the action. it's not worth it.
flock cameras are also now tracking bluetooth device signatures when you pass them. if you drive past a flock camera with your bluetooth-enabled hearing aid or cochlear implant, the flock camera knows you passed through
Wait I just realized this is gonna apply to all cgms and most if not all insulin pumps. Theyāre all Bluetooth devices, itās essential to how they work
friend of mine recommended a video essay that's like 5 hours long about why it's currently a whole Thing for fascists to claim they only eat meat and demonize vegetables etc etc, and it's genuinely quite well researched in many places and contains some fascinating history and has made me feel very weird about my status as an adult who enjoys drinking milk. but I've not finished it and I genuinely don't know if I will because at one point the ol' "you can't say you care about animals and also eat animals" chestnut got dropped by the white vegan essayist and it put such a bad taste in my mouth that I had to leave instantly
like idk man it just feels genuinely parodic to dedicate hours to analyzing how foodways have frequently been used as white supremacist propaganda and then casually toss out an argument that pretty invariably demonizes indigenous hunting practices with 0 regard for traditional knowledge and land stewardship guiding those practices
Every time I hear a white vegan say that I want to throw the rubble of the Klamath Dams at them.
The largest dam removal in U.S. history. So successful that the salmon that havenāt run freely in the river for literally over a century came back the next year. Not steady progress over a decade as expected, the very next salmon run they came home. No one alive saw salmon in that river outside the hatcheries kept by nativeās tribes and the Department of Fish And Wildlife scientists desperately trying to save them. One of the activists who helped bring the suit spoke of their dying grandmother making them promise to bring the fish home, and they didnāt know how that was possible, but they spent decades doing it.
The legal basis for successfully suing the power company who owned the dams was Indigenous treaty rights to eat the fish. Eating the fish was the one thing in a century that succeeded in being a clear and legally binding right that superseded the desires of white capital and industry. I have been going to the public interest environmental law conference off and on for 20 years where a lot of organizing for Undam The Klamath happened. Iāve heard updates about every legal tact they tried as they happened, and they tried everything.
There are healthy, thriving salmon, trout, and lamprey in a rewilding and recovering Klamath River right now as a direct result of Indigenous people eating them. Of their legally binding right to eat them. They sure as fuck care more about those fish than any white vegan ever could. They are salmon people that the Creator sent Salmon to feed, while charging the People with protecting and stewarding them. Itās not possible to learn about salmon and trout in the Pacific Northwest without learning this, and itās unambiguously racist to dismiss this symbiotic relationship.
The white vegans are trying to get all hunting and fishing banned in Oregon, and thatās quite possibly the single most catastrophic thing that could be done to the animals here because we killed off all the major predators of creatures like deer and without anything hunting them their numbers will explode, eat all the vegetation, destroy the ecosystem, and then die along with everything else in that failing ecosystem. Controlled hunting of deer is vitally necessary for the deer to survive. This is something Native people know, but patronizing racist savior-complex white people refuse to listen to.
I have a whole collection of Oregonās Public Broadcastingās documentaries about Klamath River or the larger story of fish and people in the region. If you watch nothing else, watch Klamath Dams Are Coming Out, First Salmon Ceremony, After The Dams, and First Decent (Native made). It could not be clearer that the salmon are being protected and nourished by the people who eat them, and that stewardship is a massive part of their creation myths. But it contradicts political vegan dogma so they donāt listen.
#also do you have any idea how much conservation is funded by people who want to eat those animals#at least in the us anytime someone buys ammo or hunting equipment or hunting licenses that money goes directly to state wildlife agencies
Wait so. Elliot Pageās role in The Odyssey is to be unwillingly sacrificed within the first five minutes of his appearance and THATāS the ācomplex and interestingā role that people have claimed was personally gifted to him by Nolan for transitioning into a man?? Five minutes of screen time where heās immediately killed?? Are we actually fucking serious right now. Iāve had to deal with post after post on every social media platform telling me that The Odyssey is proof that Elliot Page transitioned into privilege and the role in question is the most insulting, transphobic, nothingburger Iāve ever seen in my life. Am I missing something here because I feel like Iām losing my mind.
These people think a trans man existing in public is proof of privilege. These people think a trans man being allowed to live and breathe is proof of privilege. These people donāt want trans men to exist btw call it out for what it is at this point.
I get that Sinon is an important and complex character, but when weāre discussing the context of Elliot Page playing him and how his character was handled in Nolanās adaptation:
1) His character doesnāt exist in Homerās Odyssey and was taken from Virgilās Aeneid and given to him instead of giving him an actual character in the Odyssey. If someone were to visit the original source material, his role will not even be there.
2) He is essentially the dead wife of the plot, and is also one of the youngest characters. He haunts the narrative, which is a pretty common role given to women so as to not actually write them into the plot, but please do keep telling me that there is absolutely no transphobic or misogynistic biases towards why Elliot Page was specifically selected to play Sinon.
3) He still only gets a combined amount of about five minutes of screentime, and considering this is the most notable role heās recieved since coming out 5+ years ago⦠I donāt think this is proof that transitioning has benefited his career. Every time Elliot Page is even mentioned by name, the internet goes on a horrifically transphobic crusade for months until heās forced back into obscurity. His acting career has objectively tanked since coming out.
4) Elliot Page has already worked with Chrisopher Nolan and was given a (noteably) bigger role in Inception pre-transition. Christopher Nolan did not āwaitā for Elliot Page to transition (whatever the fuck that means), the two already knew each other from previous projects.
Edit: Personally, the only real win to me is that a trans man got to play a cis man without his transness being considered an issue, but the way in which Nolan went about it felt more like throwing Elliot Page a bone while benefiting from the outrage caused by Elliot Page simply existing, and instead of celebrating the small win that trans men received, every single side of the internet decided to rip into him and either call him a mentally ill woman or a privileged man benefiting from misogyny.
it feels like people trying to use Page's role in this movie to make a point about Nolan's misogyny are falling into the age-old trap of treating trans experiences purely as a means to prove cis women's experiences.
like, the OP of one particular post that went around got mad at people in the notes for calling them out, talking about how they were just trying to use this as an example to talk about misogynistic writing and "see, you derailed this post about how women are treated to talk about a man!" but its more than just an ill decision on their part.
people are so eager to make the joke that Page transitioned as is now getting better roles, regardless of whether or not its true. people are eager because its a joke that paints such a clear, pointed image of how cis women are affected by misogyny. its the same reason people love "if men could get pregnant..." jokes and sayings even when they are supposedly trans-inclusive. its the same reason that gender studies classes motherfucking love talking about how binary trans men and women in office jobs lose or gain male privilege, because it reduces trans experiences to a vehicle to illustrate cis women's oppression and cis men's privilege.
and people get really mad when you point out that they treat real trans men's real experiences as an allegory they can play around with to talk about how bad cis women are treated. like with "if men could get pregnant," people talking about how Page transitioned and suddenly got a "better role" act like you are spoiling their fun or missing the point, and they insist: but I wasn't even thinking about trans men! I was just trying to talk about how badly women are treated! and don't understand that, yes, that is the problem.
