Charlotte Brisbane (Peyton Mitchell), a witch with magic she’s never understood, has lived her whole life on the run. When an accidental release of magic drowns a mob intent on burning her at the stake, she finds herself with Dorian Ignatus (Luke Evans), a driven Witch Hunter, on her tail. With no where else to turn, Charlotte calls up fellow witch Cillian Embry (Matthew Bomer) that she grew up with and helped her escape once as a teenager. Cillian immediately invites her to come stay with him in his secluded supernatural community. Once there she is amazed at the number of supernaturalists who are in hiding there while she herself has to adjust to life as part of a stationary group. While reconnecting with Cillian she also befriends the second-in-command of the resident werewolf pack, Jake Riley (Jeremy Renner), who is equal parts charming and intriguing. But when their friendship looks well on the way to becoming more, the matriarch of the witch coven, Thalia Blackwood (Lynn Collins) lets Charlotte know under no uncertain terms that such an association is belittling of a witch and won’t be tolerated in her new coven. Charlotte, however as a renegade who’d lived my her own rules since she was 12 didn’t quite give a damn and continued on the budding romance. But then her relationship with the coven is strained even more when it is revealed that she has water elemental magic at the same time Cillian unleashes his earth elemental magic to save some of the supernaturalists in the community from a violent tree fall. Thalia and her acolytes interpret the revelation and coming together of two of the Elements to be a bad omen and a source of trouble. Others among the coven however think that it is a good sign that means that the four elements are uniting to bring the world of magic into the light and out of persecution. This faction of beleivers strive to help Cillian and Charlotte figure it out. When Charlotte tells Jake about her new discovery he makes it clear that he doesn’t care about witch politics but that he believes in her and that there is something very special about her. There is a final confrontation between Charlotte and Thalia in which Thalia tells Charlotte that she is a bad sign and no longer welcome in their coven. Just then, before things can get any worse, Cillian and some of the good witches who were doing research come and warn Charlotte that the Witch Hunter locked onto her water elemental use and is tracking her to the village. Charlotte knows she must protect the rest of the community from such persecution and decides to leave even though she’s falling for Jake and doesn’t want to leave Cillian but knows its for the best. Cillian realizes that it is only a matter of time before Dorian finds out about his magic and decides to leave too. Charlotte and Cillian agree that it is too dangerous for them to travel together at the moment so he goes his own way to find out more about their elemental magic and what it means as well as to find the others. Charlotte is about to leave when she goes to sya goodbye to Jake only to find him packed and ready to leave. He explains that while they may not understand what is going on but he can’t let her go on her own with the Witch Hunter on her trail. His uncle (Sebastian Roche), the leader of the pack, understands Jake’s sense of duty and gives him his blessing, knowing that that pull means that Jake has found his mate. Not alone for the first time in a long time, Charlotte leave the village in the woods with Jake to lead Dorian away and find some help in laying low.
