The Rogue’s Scribe: Welcome to October

Well, I’m a bit late, aren’t I? At least I have it up this week, right? This Wednesday was my 8th wedding anniversary, so I was a touch distracted this week with regards to my writing blog. Whoops.

However, I still had a bit to talk about this week. Mostly about stories I’m taking in so I can be inspired for my own writing.

This week’s talking points included:

Celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness month and a mini-talk about how everyone should use this month to remember to get checked.

Me and Hubby celebrating our anniversary by staying home and binge-watching shows.

Yes, we did cave and get the trial of Amazon Prime, so we’ve finally watched The Boys and Good Omens

Hubby and I watching Oxventure by OutsideXbox and Outside Xtra, and how it’s the better fit for us than the far more popular Critical Role.

I compare the Oxventure Guild shenanigans to those of my own play group.

I actually go on about Oxventure for a little bit...

My struggles with coming up with a story for my friend Ronoxym inadvertently helping inspire @chibisunnie for her next picture book.

Researching Ronoxym’s favorite - or one of - book series The Dresden Files helping me finally narrow down what kind of genre stories he enjoys.

Hint: it’s modern urban fantasy with a darker/grittier but still humorous take.

The revelation of what kind of stories Ron really gravitates towards FINALLY inspiring me for a story!

A listing of writing prompts I enjoyed, even though they don’t fit the genre I was aiming for

Amnesia - Open

A black haired man enveloped in fire stood over the body of a young girl with red hair. She wasn’t moving. Screaming can be heard. The man’s attention turns towards a terrified boy. The man picked up an object and swung it towards the boy.

Enji woke up. Everything seemed too bright. Not to mention everything hurts. Was there really a need to go all out like that? But then, what about Yuka? However he could barely really focus on his surroundings. Everything seemed a bit blurry. It was also hard to tell if anyone was there or not. There was also something that didn’t feel right.

Thank the gods that the market was such a lively place. Hashirama did not have the patience to stroll all day and hope to gather what he needed like a slow, grazing animal. He also did not understand why exactly Mito wanted him to purchase everything on the list, rather than just grow it for her. To be perfectly honest, he was mildly offended by the notion that his plants didn’t produce tasty food, but who was he to argue with his wife? She ran the clan for him most of the time, and he owed her especially for the favour she’d done him and Madara with being discreet about certain arrangements.

Anyway, it all boiled down to him standing at this produce stand that had caught his eye. It looked vibrant, fresh and diverse enough to cover all of the things he’d been sent for like some kind of errand boy.

“I need three dozen turnips, a bushel of radishes, four crates of apples, three limes, six and a half peaches, sixteen lotus stems, a bucket of green beans, a bucket of strawberries, a pineapple, whatever that is, and onions. Lots and lots of onions. Like, a wheelbarrow of onions. She was very specific on that part.”

If half of these fruits and vegetables were out of season or simply exotic, he was just going to have to placate his pregnant wife with the home-grown versions.

Trialing ideas

Tonight I had a go at painting and drawing the market and it’s other structures/landscape in the style of an artist I found, Nadir Afonso. His work is really unique and intriguing, and the style of his art is ideal for a poster because it grabs your attention. The reason for this is because of the colour choices he made, there are a lot of contrasting styles and unique lines in which he has illustrated. 

I think that I could use his work as inspiration for my own because he likes to use landscapes as a main focus point and this is something I had been keen on from the start, another reason is simply down to the fact that he uses a geometric style throughout his art. I haven’t created anything before in this particular style and since creating a little mood board page in my sketchbook I just knew that was the direction I wanted to take my project, I like it because there is a lot of negative space and I want to use this as an advantage to draw attention to the main focus.
