New Year, New Beginning
(I FINALLY got around to posting this!)
"Would you like to sit down and wait for the fireworks to start? I don't think it will be long now." It was New year's eve and Katharena and Khadorek were at the same bench they had previously met at two years earlier. Back them they were just friends. As the clock stuck midnight and the fireworks begun, Kath leaned in and gave Khad a kiss. It was an innocent, friendly gesture, but one that stirred inside both of the them the possibility that their friendship could be more.
"You make me happy as well, Katharena. You have been the light at the end of the tunnel." Khadorek replies, blushing a bit as she kisses the back of his hand. "Yeah, I think you're right..." Khad says, moving his free hand down to his pocket to check his watch. Sure enough, it was getting close to midnight, incredibly close. Khadorek swallowed a lump rising in his throat; it was now or never, else he'd lose his chance.
"Katharena, my love, two years ago I had happiness staring me in the face and reaching out for me on this very spot, and I ignored its call to the point where I thought I had lost it forever," he began, his words sounding like he had been preparing them for a while now, "I might've gotten my second chance in that case, but who knows what might happen in the future?" He says, taking both her hands in his and holding them between them. "I'm not going to let that happen again, for both of our sakes; you deserve much more from your man than someone who would be afraid of such things. So I've come back here, with you, on the same night it all started two years ago, to take that same moment and make it one where I didn't shy away from something that was meant to be..." He pauses, sweating bullets now, fighting to hold off the shakes of nervousness. This wasn't too soon, was it? He knew she wanted this, but did she want it now or would she prefer to wait? It was too late to back out now, he had to see it through. He takes a deep, shuddering breath, and takes a knee.
Katharena looks at him curiously, was he nervous all of a sudden? She smiles when he starts to speak. It had been a wonderful two years, even though she had lost her mother, she couldn't of been happier. She continues to listen to his words, her heart began to beat a little bit faster when she realized what was going on. "Khad..." she swallows, the lump in her throat forming and her head spinning. Once he got down on one knee she gulped in nervousness. This was actually happening.
Khadorek was both happy and afraid that she was nervous as well, having no idea if that was a good thing or not, but he pressed on regardless. He reaches into his jacket pocket, producing a small, velvet box. Releasing her hands, he opens the box, revealing a shining ring with vintage filigree and a diamond in the center of the ring, with an amethyst and ruby on either side, carved to look as if they were swirling into the diamond. "Katharena Elizabeth Graeson, will you marry me and be my Countess Blackbyrne?"
