This was my second time watching Finding Frances (2017). The first time was in the context of the show Nathan for You as the series finale. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of watching it in a crowded theatre in the context of a documentary film festival.

Finding Frances sees Nathan Fielder trying to help his friend and preferred Bill Gates impersonator Bill Heath, who can’t get over a woman who once loved him. Bill regrets how the relationship ended and hopes that if he can find Frances, there’s a change she might be interested in starting over. Meanwhile, Nathan begins a relationship with Maci, an escort whom he pays to spend time with. It’s about regret, choosing your career over relationships, and the complex relationship between truth and our own wishful delusions. Like all of Fielder’s work, it is a hilarious and beautiful exploration of humanity. It’s a delight on its own, and a crowning jewel to end Nathan for You. 

I also had the opportunity to ask Fielder a question during his Q&A, which I will approximately transcribe. 

Me: Are you still in contact with Maci and Bill?

Nathan: I get lunch with Bill every two weeks. I think he’s a really interesting person and I love spending time with him. His family lives in Arkansas, so he doesn’t have anyone in LA to check up on him and see how he’s doing, so I try to check up on him for them. And Maci’s doing great.
