His fight is over
[WARNINGS: This is a Finn-Friendly post. If it is not you cup of tea, fine, don’t feel like you need to voice it here, really. You wanna talk about it? Great: send me a message, tag me in a post, but please don’t send hate here. Thank you very much.
This post doesn’t address any ship. It’s canon related so Flarke and Bellarke don’t get confused, your time will come in another post I’m preparing now.
Sorry for any typos, I do my best but I’m only human…and italian.
GIFS ARE NOT MINE, they belong to their rightful and wonderful maker and I just borrowed them here. It was also hard to find them all.]
Shall we begin?
We all have that one character that we don’t like. He comes into the scene and you just know which role he is playing in the story and you don’t like it. It happens.
Finn was that character for me. It was not the actor, it was not what he did, it was what he meant.
What was this thing that I couldn’t stand? Finn is, as I said a number of time already, the archetype of the lover.
He lives and defines himself through his love for the people around him.
Why would this be so bad to me?
Love is a tricky thing my friends, it’s a dangerous thing even more.
Listen to Rumple, my friends…
I read a post some days ago, an answer to my post “you’re gonna be fine, Princess” in which a fellow blogger said that love clouds you. I didn’t agree on the rest of the post but this is true! She was absolutely right, one of the thing that love does is to cloud you, in this sense: you have your loved one, you want to keep this person safe, to protect and make this person happy and…there is not really something that you wouldn’t do to achieve this. Everything gets grey, like if covered by clouds and you just walk in this grey zone where right and wrong are not the guide lines, the one you love and his well being are. So you are ready to make sacrifices for this person…and sometimes what you sacrifice in not a what but a who. And you don’t care. Or better: you don’t care enough to stop.
Not all love takes this shape but it happens. It happened to Finn.
As I said it’s true that love clouds you sometime, but it also focuses you. Love it’s deeply contradictory and it’s not so hard to understand why: you are completely projected to someone else’s well being and happiness and in this sense you should be selfless, right? But if we are completely honest we know there is a selfish shade too, because the reason we care about this person so much is because she makes us happy, this person is a need to our life. Yea, as I said. Contradictory.
But why did I say it focuses us? Because, yes, we are clouded to the surrounding world but that one we love, that person for us in in HD, is as clear as the sun, as the polar star: we walk towards that one point of light and defeat all we find on our path.
Like an arrow. Or a bullet.
This happened to Finn.
This aspects of love so problematic are so easy to be romanticized. He did it for love, his intentions where pure. He didn’t mean the bad, he was blinded by love. He sacrificed everything in the name of love.
Like this is some kind of greater force that just should make us all kneel and forgive. Accept it.
It’s a cheap justification, to me.
Along the road we justified Finn a whole lot.
When he cheated on Raven: he couldn’t possibly imagine he would see her again, we said. So, does this make what he did any less of a betrayal?
When, on the way down on the ground, he acted like a brat, opened his belt and other two kids, just as stupid but less lucky, died because he looked cool: he just wanted to have fun, he was just a kid, he never forced them…does this change the fact that they died?
When he kept lying to Raven, continued their relationship even when he was in love with Clarke because he couldn’t master the courage to be honest, and I think also because he wasn’t sure Clarke would have wanted to stay with him and he was too afraid to be alone: but he didn’t want to hurt her like that (her? Clarke or Raven? Does it matter?), he cared about Raven and he gave her what he thought she wanted…does this make him any less of a liar or a coward?
Now, let me make this perfectly clear: I’m not saying that Finn Collins was the devil. Not at all.
He was the boy who let out of the camp Lincoln after his dagger almost killed him. He was the one who came back to the grounder to try and find peace, at risk of dying, again.
He was the boy who didn’t hesitate a second at grabbing Clarke when she was ill even if he could have contracted the illness and died very easily. He was the one that went with Bellamy to try and find Octavia, just because it was the right thing to do. He risked again his life to get to Lincoln and find something to help Raven after she was shot by Murphy. He tried to help with Charlotte, in the beginning and he gave a knife at Murphy when everybody else just left him behind without a second glance.
But what I really can’t forget is that time he was safe, in the camp and Bellamy wasn’t. I can’t forget how he followed Clarke out, when she couldn’t close the dropship without him and I can’t forget how after he heard her cry out Bellamy’s name, when she was screaming, desperate, that he run, when she cracked with a broken voice that he was being killed, how he threw himself out of the camp, in the core of the battle, to save the guy he didn’t really like, the guy he thought was dangerous and mostly the one Clarke trusted and he didn’t. The guy the girl is was madly in love with would choose to trust over him.
I can’t forget this Finn because he could be just as strong as he was a coward. Just as selfless as he was a liar. He could be a hero.
He fought. He was brave. He cared.
He loved.
In the end, his only sin was love.
He shot 18 innocents. People who never fought the 100, children, women and elders. He shot because he was desperate and frighten by what he felt he was becoming. And again, he did it for love.
Does this make this less of a massacre?
He was lost: Raven was not his anymore and even if we all know the one he was in love with was Clarke I always keep Matt Donovan’s word clear and dear in my mind, i.e. when you fall in love with someone, you never really stop to love him/her. So yeas, he lost Raven in a way and he had lost Clarke too…worst. Maybe he never really had her.
The boy who lived loving lost the girl he loved first, and the girl he couldn’t help but love…losing himself was just logical and inevitable consequence.
The way he died though, I think was a perfect ending for him: he found his way back to himself thank to Raven, as I said before (when he saw what she was willing to do to save him he understood that he didn’t want her to take the fall with him. He made the right choice to protect her from what love have done to him. I told you guys: love is a tricky thing) and at the same time managed to say goodbye to Clarke. He went not as a murdered but as a necessary sacrifice. He paid for his fault and was able to do it as the boy that could be the hero, not as the one who would make anything for love.
He made the right thing, for love.
So he was, for me, the lover better than the Spacewalker and this character that I started not liking ended his journey earning my respect and I will miss him.
He gave me something. He redeemed his love.
I will tell you also that for me it’s coherent the way the writers portrayed his arc, that I think this death was not useless or fan service and doing this I trust you to respect my opinion.
I tried to analyze this character in the most neutral way. I started with his fault because that’s the first thing I saw in him but then I underlined also all his virtues…and they were not few. I learnt how to appreciate Finn Collins and I’m sorry for the one who lost him. I trust the show to give honor to his passing and with this the only thing left to say it’s…
Farewell, Spacewalker.
You were loved.
Fucking glee needs to stop now because I am so done. I am not ready for Finn. No
Glee is sometimes so, you know, glee, that occasionally I forget how well it can also rip my heart out.
Aaah I'm not ready for the Cory Monteith tribute episode...this has to be the one most emotional and honest Glee episode of all times. This time I look at the persons and realize they are not even playing, it's just true
If I die young, bury me in satin , lay me down on a bed of roses, sink me in the river at dawn send me away with the words of a love sine oh oh , oh ohhhhh
Amber Riley - I'll Stand By You
her voice, is like angels feeding me cake.. i love her, with all my heart and she is such a beautiful person and and ahhh
The Finn tribute episode gave me real closure. I call it the "Finn" tribute rather than the "Cory" tribute because I feel that personally, I accepted Cory's death some time ago. But Finn was a huge part of what Cory was to me. I didn't particularly care for Finn, but it couldn't be denied, he was there. Now that 5X03 has happened, I feel like I can finally say goodbye to Cory, and look forward to a new tomorrow, and be happy that Cory was here, not sad that he's gone <3
