Memory of water (fin.Teemestarin kirja) by Emmi Itäranta is a dystopian novel about water or rather the absence of it.

Noria lives in a post-apocalyptic Finland, where water is extremely rare and the regime uses it to enforce it’s power. The people get assigned a ration of water, which is barely enough to survive. Noria grows up in a family of teemakers and soon finds out that her father is keeping a secret. A private water spring. Which is strictly forbidden.

This book is a prominent member of the genre “Finnish weird”, so you don’t have to expect much of a resolution. But I think Itäranta does such a good job of depicting this world, which just underlines how important and fragile our environment is.

 Aavetaajuus has moved to a bigger space a bit up the street on which they originally were. My prints have also got their own wall at the moment, I’m so happy and grateful ;___; So, if you’re not able to attend cons, this is the place to get them~  Aavetaajuus is a magnificent shop full of Finnish speculative fiction, and foreign too, topped with some fun folklore, occult and para-everything, so I can warmly recommend visiting the place, even if my art wouldn’t be your cup of tea ;>

Finnish Weird. Auf der Suche nach dem Unerklärlichen.

Im Umfeld des Finnland-Schwerpunktes auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2014 ist ein neues Genre promoted worden, jener des Finnish Weird. Erfunden hat diesen Begriff die finnische Autorin Johanna Sinisalo, die mit ihrem 2005 ins Deutsche übersetzten Buch “Troll: Eine Liebesgeschichte” selbst den Klassiker zu diesem Genre geschrieben hat.
