hey! i haven't been following for long but i'm glad i'm here now. I'm not totally sure how to ask this but... do you experience both dissociative symptoms (guessing depersonalization/derealization) as well as fibromyalgia? I do too and was just curious, couldn't tell one way or another from the few posts i've read. Thank you for existing and for everything you share <3
I do. I am diagnosed with both conditions. There is a theory that fibromyalgia is usually related to undergoing extreme stress or a traumatic event, causing your muscles to be constantly working, which causes the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. DPDR (depersonalization/derealization disorder) can be caused by a few things, but for me it is caused by a series of traumas in my life and a very stressful period where I almost, well, died. It’s a long story.
Sooooooo basically my brain is like DANGER DANGER WE MUST ESCAPE even though there isn’t danger anymore, and my body is like DANGER DANGER WE MUST PROTEC and so… the poor thing, it’s doing its best.
I am also diagnosed with ADHD-inattentive, after years of being incorrectly diagnosed as bipolar, which (after years of being ignored misdiagnosed, my trauma ignored, and being repeatedly put on medications that caused me extreme stress) has contributed to the dissociation.
I am getting treatment, as well as exploring what I can do on my own - diet changes, more “natural” remedies, adding a bit of exercise into my day, and I am going to see if I can join a local YMCA and do water aerobics.
It’s nice to meet a fellow spoonie! I have interacted with a few folks who have both DPDR and fibro. I don’t know if you get this with it but when my pain gets worse, I feel more present in my body? But when it gets better, well, I feel a bit more dissociated. I’ve had the dissociation for almost 7 years. Bleh.
I hope you have a great day and this answered your question!
