Nully Breathing Fire

This was going to be a part of a longer sequence but it ended up not working when I storyboarded it. Anyway this is my first good example of a fire choro using their powers.

Some of the largest megafauna in the taiga where Rook grew up. The winters are icy and the summers are warm. The animals are all (roughly) to scale with each other.

My design philosophy with the oppy world fauna has almost become “make a normal animal but slightly different.” And I do mean slightly. It might be kind of boring to some people, but I like drawing the animals as almost-normal. I’ll throw some extinct stuff in there, too, sometimes.

Fire Choro 2022

Nothing much changed for the fire choros’ design this year. I just try to draw them bulkier than I used to.

Fire Choro Subspecies Variation

Unlike rain choros, fire choros don’t have a huge range of color morphs. For the most part there is the normal red morph, the melanistic fire, and the more unusual orange morph.

Melanism is more common here than in any other subspecies, resulting in either dark red-brown or wine colored feathers. It is considered by many fire choros to be a sophisticated and intimidating color, which contributes to the proliferation of the mutation.

The orange morph in its brightest variation has the distinction of resembling the now extinct lava choro. Lava choros are said to have been iridescent orange, large enough to dwarf the largest fire formel, and nearly indestructible (their mythology only grows over time, to the point that immortality and the ability to walk on water is sometimes included in their list of powers). Fire choros flaunt their similarity to the legendary birds at every opportunity.

Also pictured is my old character Juniper, a fire choro tiercel with either lightning or rain in his recent ancestry, which gives him a different silhouette to the others.
