I truly believe the Ice = bad and fire = good dichotomy is the most infuriating take in this fandom. GRRM is on record stating that they are both destructive forces. It’s consistently conveyed in the text, yet every time I see people bring this argument up (especially if it’s how the Others will be ‘defeated’) you’re met with ‘oh fire will triumph over ice and the key five are going to save the world/ some curtain of light bullshit.’
Targ stans will combat the argument of the fire threat being just as deadly as the ice threat with that one time GRRM said that fire is life, love and passion (if I remember correctly) yet then they’ll ignore everything in the text pointing to dragons / fire being a destructive force as well as GRRM calling them the equivalent of nuclear weapons … They can’t even admit that dragons cause mass devastation , they’ll jump you for daring to go against the grain of these fire breathing lizards being anything but cute pets to be worshipped 💀
My favorite thing is still that one time a blog claimed that me pointing out negative fire imagery in the books was a racist attack against the country of Azerbaijan. Ah, good times.
GRRM does describe fire in positive terms, same as he does snow and cold. And he describes both as destructive and deadly too. They never take scale into account.
Gently falling flakes, ice used to cool burns or store food, or a general winter landscape are not the same as a winterstorm, an ice cell meant to degrade and torture, or an icy darkness that lasts a generation. A hearthfire or a little bonfire meant to sustain life is a very different image from the kind of destructive conflagration we associate with war, murderous funeral pyres or dragonfire.
Nuance? We don't know her.
