Haletown Volunteer Fire Department Receive New Air Packs
On Thursday, the Haletown Volunteer Fire Department received new air packs paid for by a FEMA grant. Over the coming weeks, the fire department will integrate these new systems into use on their apparatuses. The fire department received 10 new systems, 20 new 30-minute bottles, and 13 new masks. Page 3. ---- ESSEX CABIN ---- Blaze of November 15 Is Under Investigation ---- An open investigation into the fire which destroyed the cabin home of James Gerhard, at Essex, early in the morning of November 5 was launched at Essex Town Hall yesterday by R. J. Marsh, deputy fire marshal of Ontario. The probe is incomplete, and a decision will be announced later.
The dwelling had been insured for $1,000.
Conflicting stories of their movements In the house prior to the fire, were told by Gerhard and Walter Johnson. a boarder. The fire broke out about 2.30 o'clock in the morning, and both men were absent in Albertville at the time.
Gerhard related they were In the house about 4.30 o'clock in the afternoon, and after remaining three or four minutes, left again. Johnson, however, claimed they stayed in the cabin about twenty minutes. The owner had spent a good part of his time in a small pantry, he asserted. The pantry was the point of origin of the blaze.
Both Chief of Police Patterson and Fire Chief Madel testified that, in their opinion, the fire was incendiary.
The blaze was first noticed by a Detroit motorist who was passing Albert and Maidstone streets, the corner where the cabin was located.
