How I Would Improve RENT
I like thus music, but the plot is kind of "eh". A few changes off the top of my head:
Mimi should have been a man. This musical is about the effects of the AIDS crisis at the end of the 80s, and choosing to focus on two (presumably) heterosexuals with HIV is sort of weird for me. I get that it was probably "edgy" at the time, but a romance between Roger and a "male!Mimi" would have been super interesting. Like, literally you could just change the character's gender/sex and keep her profession as a stripper and all her songs and it would be perfect.
Maureen/Joanne. There's clearly some tension between the two other than "omg I'm so wild and crazy and progressive and she's just so uptight with her lists and irrational anger at how unfaithful I am". What is it? Race. Maybe I'm over-interpreting, but don't you get the sense that Maureen would totally be that dbag who would date a woman of color just to "prove" something about her own vaunted ideas of herself? Like, some acknowledgement of "hey you're black I'm white how do we/society/our friends and family feel about this and how does this affect our relationship?" would have been super cool.
Clear up Angel's gender. I think to be more relevant to today, Angel should clear be a transwoman, but the source material leaves it kind of ambiguous, and from what I can tell on the interwebs, there's debate over this. The consistent use of she/her/hers in regards to Angel favor a trans* interpretation, as does that fact that she never identifies as being a man in drag. Also, doesn't Collins correct someone who misgenders her?
Seriously, any acknowledgment of how Benny is just trying to make the neighborhood better. Like honestly, he's trying to bring jobs and stuff and then there's Maureen going "OMG SQUALOR! MORE SQUALOR! ALL THE SQUALOR! DIET COKE!". (My bestie and I really think he's not as evil as the musical tries to make him out to be).
Mark should be like 525,600% less annoying.
I'm sure there's more, but I'm tired and need to go to bed now, so if you like this, feel free to add more.
(Also, I'm a white cis gay man, so if anything I've said is problematic, feel free to call me out)
