What if you have to buy liability insurance to purchase a gun?
The Second Amendment is always under attack these days. Liberals continue to come up with new and “logical” arguments to try and block gun enthusiasts from all things regarding firearms. They’ve tried banning ammunition, and tried they have tried to push through a new background check law for “closing the gun show loophole.” But the latest? They want you to buy liability insurance BEFORE you can purchase a gun.

Rep Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) introduced the bill on Friday. The Hill wrote,
The Firearm Risk Protection Act, unveiled Friday, would require gun buyers to have liability insurance coverage before being allowed to purchase a weapon, and would impose a fine of $10,000 if an owner is found not to have it. Service members and law enforcement officers, however, would be exempt from the requirement.
“We require insurance to own a car, but no such requirement exists for guns,” Maloney said in a statement. “The results are clear: car fatalities have declined by 25 percent in the last decade, but gun fatalities continue to rise.”
Let’s fact check her, shall we?
The number of motor vehicle deaths actually rose in 2012 by 2.6%, and 2005 it rose by .44%, in 2002 it was up by .89%. The largest drop occurred in 2009, but the years that it fell had nothing whatever to do with a piece of paper (insurance), it had to do with safety features on cars , adherence to seat belt laws, etc. It also may have partly had to do with enforcement of those traffic laws by law enforcement. But it certainly was not done by a piece of paper.
In 2013, there were 32, 719 people killed in car crashes in the United States. In 2013, there were only 8,454 homicides from firearms. If you’ll notice this chart from the FBI, gun fatalities from violent crimes are not rising, they have been going down. The violent crime rate overall declined 5.1 percent from 2012.
The violent crime rate will likely spike in 2015 thanks to Baltimore, but forcing gun owners to buy liability insurance would serve only to block legal gun purchasers from the process.
