Yellow-bellied Toad (Bombina variegata scabra), family Bombinatoridae, Thrace, Greece

This frog is engaged in an “unkenreflex”, in which it shows off its brightly colored underside, as a warning to predators that it is toxic. Many toxic frogs and salamanders, with bright warning colors on the belly, but cryptic coloration on the back, use the unkenreflex, when pertubed.

Feast your eyes on the Yunnan firebelly toad, a species fittingly classified as Bombina maxima. Admire their skin, akin to polished bronze; their warts, so round and bulbous; their eyes, so honest and shiny. These wonderful toads are native to Yunnan, China, though populations likely exist in Myanmar as well. These toads can occasionally be found as pets, but their toxins are reported to cause skin irritation when handled without gloves. Images by Wouter Beukema,  Alexander Haas, and Kai Wang.
