Firefighting Profession Dangerous? Several years ago I attended a class . The course was on NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator. 1st day of the class two Gents walk in. I take a look and think to myself these two are not FF’s. But who am I to judge. Then it happened. A young FF turned around & asked question we all wanted to know to these Gents I thought weren't Firefighters. Hey, what's your background he asked? “military” he replied, young guy turned asking more questions. “Do any tours or anything?” he asked. Ben the military guy responded. “Yeah he says I toured Bosnia\Afghanistan”. I'm impressed a real vet. Doing what? “EOD” Ben replied .He asked him “EOD “like in Hurt Locker? wear the suit ? Nah Ben says if your gonna get it suit doesn't help. Ever get blown up? Young guys asks. Yeah we were disposing of ied’s in a cave buddy lit a short fuse. He normally lit long ones long enough for me to have a smoke but not that day. So I have nerve damage to my ear & hand. He former EOD Technician. Explosive Ordinance Disposal. Moments later he turn and points at me and says YOU, ya YOU FF’s running into burning buildings that's just NUTS! I'm embarrassed but tell him would rather do that any day than be an EOD Tech!!
