To lose one’s freedom is a fate second only to losing one’s life.’ - Russell Maroon Shoatz Yesterday, August 21st, a nationwide prison strike began, possibly one of the largest in history. It started on the 21st to commemorate the assasination of George Jackson at San Quentin in 1971 & goes till sept 9th marking the 47th anniversary of the Attica Prison rebellion in NY where 1000 inmates rioted and took control of the prison for 4 days in response to George Jackson’s assasination and the violent dehumanizing conditions of prisons. The dates of this strike are very deliberate and a continuum of Black n Brown rebellion & self-determination against this violent prison system, which provides the foundation of this violent global settler colonial system as a whole. A system that incarcerates more people than any other place in the world, a system that enslaves, rapes, tortures and kills. The quote above is by revolutionary elder, former Black Panther and Black liberation fighter Russell maroon Shoatz, who has been incarcerated for over 40 years, 30 of those years being tortured in the hole. He escaped multiple times but is currently serving multiple life sentences as a political prisoner of war like so many of our elders. And like so many of our brothers and sisters and youth locked up in cages for survival, for defense, for being Black & Brown Indigenous people. So much love and solidarity to the brave comrades on the inside taking action. It’s so necessary that we support the work and continue to build and support the self organization of our folks on the inside because we can’t abolish white supremacy and capitalism without abolishing prisons.
