Tear gas is one of the ways police can disrupt protests. Protestors and healthcare workers should be prepared.
1. Protect your eyes and airway.
A full-face respirator is the best protection from the worst effects. Any face covering is better than nothing. A disposable N95 or half-mask respirator is a good way to buy you some time to get to safety or deal with a canister. Masks can make you a target, however, so it's better to carry them and only wear if needed.
The effects of tear gas set on fast, so have these things easy to reach.
- Get some shatterproof goggles. They can help against tear gas and less-lethal projectiles.
- Carry a long scarf. It's a multipurpose tool. Not great for filtering gas, but can be good for privacy, protecting your neck against projectiles, and treating other types of injuries.
- Don't wear contacts or oil-based paints or makeups that can bind/trap irritants against your eyes and skin.
- If exposed, you need to rinse with lots of water. Carry a water bottle with you, but be prepared to need a lot more than you're able to carry. 20 minutes at least. Other types of rinses are not as effective.
Tear gas is heavier than air. Get to higher ground. Help people up off the ground.
2. Decontaminate
If exposed, rinse your eyes with regular clean water for at least 15-20 minutes. You'll probably need more water than you can carry. Your clothes may or may not be able to be salvaged.
Try to wear something thick and protective. The immediate effects of tear gas wear off in about an hour. Don't be afraid to seek medical care, especially if you have underlying respiratory issues.
People can develop respiratory issues even several weeks post-exposure. A lot of people forget that tear gas can cause chemical burns sometimes even a week later. Rinse thoroughly with soap and water. Also don't forget the canisters will burn you if touched without protection.
Sometimes I think about how in a CPR certification class, the instructor made a point of how your hands have to be flat in order to be effective, and i raised my hand to ask what to do if the person has breasts and she laughed and told me that if i was dying I wouldn't have time to be shy and the class laughed and I told her no, I mean how am I supposed to position my hands and she said that if someone needs cpr it's not the time for modesty and sometimes first responders have to take shirts off and i said no, physically how am I able to safely perform chest compressions on a body with breasts that keep my hands from lying flat and she didn't have an answer for me.
Anyway, here's an article (spoiler alert- So long as your hands are positioned between the breasts and above the sternum it should still be effective. If there is constricting clothing, remove that before beginning compressions.)

“S-something’s wrong,” Yuuki says hoarsely, shrugging his remnant limb in a frantic gesture at Kyle. He tries to make a coherent sentence but can’t. “I…he…”
Susan kneels down in the rubble, assesses Kyle’s condition.
With a curse, and her face paling, starts what looks like breaths for CPR.
Yuuki stares at her, bewildered. “But he’s breathing. He’s –”
Kyle’s abnormal breathing isn’t continuing. It’s been replaced with no breathing at all.
Susan swears. “I need to roll him onto his back. Help me.”

CPR for Companies and Groups: A Simple Guide by Pulse CPR and First Aid School
What is CPR and Why is it Important?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique used in emergencies when someone's heartbeat or breathing has stopped. It's a critical skill that can make the difference between life and death in situations such as cardiac arrest, drowning, or choking. Understanding the basics of CPR can empower anyone to take action and potentially save a life.
CPR for Companies and Groups: Breaking Down the Basics
At Pulse CPR and First Aid School, we believe that everyone in your organization should have the basic knowledge of CPR. Here's a straightforward guide to help your team understand and perform CPR effectively.
Step 1: Assess the Situation
Safety First: Ensure the environment is safe for both you and the victim.
Check Responsiveness: Gently tap the person and shout, "Are you okay?" to see if there's any response.
Call for Help: If there’s no response, call 911 immediately or ask someone else to call.
Step 2: Begin Chest Compressions
Hand Placement: Place the heel of one hand in the center of the person's chest, right between the nipples. Place your other hand on top and interlock your fingers.
Body Position: Position yourself with your shoulders directly over your hands and keep your arms straight.
Compression Technique: Push hard and fast, aiming for a depth of at least 2 inches and a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Allow the chest to recoil completely between compressions.
Step 3: Provide Rescue Breaths (if trained)
Open the Airway: Tilt the person's head back slightly and lift their chin.
Breath Delivery: Pinch the nose shut, take a normal breath, and cover the person's mouth with yours to create an airtight seal. Give two breaths, each lasting about one second, and watch for the chest to rise.
Step 4: Continue CPR
Keep alternating between 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths until medical help arrives or the person shows signs of life (such as breathing).
