Hey so who was gonna tell me that the first Apollo Justice case has this INSANE graphic in it???
[spoilers below]
I’m watching Save Data’s play through because I’m incredibly impatient (too much to make myself actually play the game rn while I’ve got Obligations) but HUH??
What the actual fuck are these lines the innuendo could not be more obvious
Between that, the comments between Phoenix and Kristoph, “Oh Really?” And poor Apollo hanging on for dear life this goddamn rollercoaster of a case is absolutely consuming my brain
(Also I might be drawing something inspired by that graphic because like. Hello?? But also….hello... Y’know?)
Anyway beanix is beautiful and a cagey little bitch
David Suchet in Poirot (1989)The Mysterious Affair at Styles
S3E1
Recovering from the horrors of World War I, British Army officer Arthur Hastings hopes to find peace and quiet at a country manor in the English countryside. But when the matriarch dies during the night from strychnine poisoning, Hastings enlists the help of an old friend staying nearby with other war refugees to help solve the murder: former Belgian police detective Hercule Poirot.
*'The Mysterious Affair at Styles' was Agatha Christie's first novel, published in 1920, and also her first to feature the character of Hercule Poirot.
Ace Attorney Bonds of Fate Case 1: Turnabout Express
Here is the script of the first case of Bonds of Fate, an Ace Attorney game that I came up with. It’s a fan made sequel to Spirit of Justice and takes place 2 years after Spirit of Justice. This isn't a parody, this is what I would actually write if I was able to make a new Ace Attorney game.
Turnabout Express
Summary:
Athena Cykes with the assistance of Trucy Wright are defending aspiring train driver Connie Ductor who is being framed for the murder of her own brother Connor Ductor by their teacher Master Chu Chu. In court they must face the imposing Prosecutor Barkiswurse Vanbite in the opening case of Ace Attorney Bonds of Fate.
Script is under the cut:
ANIME CUTSCENE MASTER CHU CHU'S OFFICE
MASTER CHU CHU is standing in his office behind his desk shaped like a modern train. CONNOR DUCTOR is laying on the floor in a pool of his own blood, dead. Master Chu Chu is holding a bust of the front of a train in his hand covered in blood. A look of panic covers his face.
MASTER CHU CHU:
What have I done!? I'm ruined! I'M RUINED!!!
Master Chu Chu looks out the window and notices a nervous CONNIE DUCTOR walking up to the building. Master Chu Chu smiles a devious grin.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Or maybe not.
INT. LOBBY MAY 9TH 2030
ATHENA CYKES:
(Another day, another trial. I was sick for most of the week, but I think I got this. My client is innocent so I have the advantage!)
TRUCY WRIGHT shows up
TRUCY WRIGHT:
Hey Athena!
ATHENA CYKES:
Trucy? I'm surprised to see you here.
TRUCY WRIGHT:
I came to assist you in court. It's been awhile and I thought it would be fun to help.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Trucy seems like a sweet girl, but she always throws me off. Her emotions I detect don't always match her expression.)
Trucy... I detect that you're kind of sad about something. Does it have something to do with your show getting moved out of the Showcase Theater?
TRUCY WRIGHT:
I'm not sad at all. My producers have a bunch of other theaters lined up to take my show. They're probably going to find something smaller, but I prefer that. I get to see the excitement on the crowd's faces when I wow them with my magic!
Trucy pats her head in a silly manner.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Now I detect a lot of anger coming from her. She does not like me prying. My ability to detect people's emotions does make it harder for people to hide their feelings.)
TRUCY WRIGHT:
So, where's our client?
ATHENA CYKES:
She's right over there.
Connie Ductor appears. She is a cutesy round faced black woman with a short dreadlock bob. Her hair has beads in them that are in the shape of trains. She is dressed up in a dark blue Japanese train driver outfit with a hat. She is smiling.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Hello! You must be Trucy Wright. I'm train enthusiast Connie Ductor!
Connie Ductor pantomimes pulling the cord to make the train horn go off. Inexplicably, the sound of a train horn can be heard when she does this.
TRUCY WRIGHT:
Wow, you seem to be in a good mood for someone trial for murder.
Connie stops smiling. She looks down on the ground ashamed and starts tearing up.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
I was trying to cope.
TRUCY WRIGHT:
Oh...Sorry.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Not only am I on trial on murder, but it's for the murder of my own brother! I loved my brother! I'm the last person in the world who would kill him!
ATHENA CYKES:
I believe you. That's what I'm here for.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
We were going to become train drivers together!
ATHENA CYKES:
I know Connie. We're going to get through this. You'll get through this ok.
Connie starts smiling a bit, though she's clearly still sad.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
... Maybe, but I trust that you can prove me innocent.
ATHENA CYKES:
I will! Even though I was your second choice, I will be doing my best!
CONNIE DUCTOR:
You weren't my second choice.
ATHENA CYKES:
I know you wanted to hire Phoenix Wright first.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
...Maybe.
Connie starts smiling reassuringly.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
But I saw something special in you! Something truly special!
ATHENA CYKES:
...... You hired me because I'm cheaper than my boss.
Connie looks down at the ground in a guilty manner.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
........Maybe.
ATHENA CYKES:
It's ok. I know I'm discount Phoenix Wright.
TRUCY WRIGHT:
You're discount Phoenix Wright for now. You'll get out of Dad's shadow! Apollo did.
ATHENA CYKES:
Yes, and all he had to do was OVERTHROW A MONARCH!
TRUCY WRIGHT:
You might not have to do something that dramatic. Dad told me people use to see him as discount Mia Fey.
ATHENA CYKES:
That doesn't matter right now. I'm just focused on proving Connie innocent.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Thank you Athena.
Connie pulls the imaginary train horn a couple more times.
INT. COURTROOM
Athena and Trucy are standing at the defense bench. The spectators are talking.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
It's been awhile. This place feels like a second home.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Yeah, it does.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Do you enjoy being a lawyer? Is it a fulfilling job?
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Of course I do. It makes feel good to protect innocent people.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Are you confident about this case?
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
I'm always a little nervous, but we got this. The truth is on our side, so we have the advantage. It shouldn't be a long case. The prosecution only has 1 witness outside of the detective and our client.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
That's good. Franziska's party is tomorrow night and Dad wants us both to come.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Oh yeah that's happening. I heard of Franziska Von Karma and how she liked to crack the whip on people.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Yeah, but Edgeworth says she's changed so it might be fun.
They look over and see a scary man walk towards the prosecution bench. He's 6'5 and is very broad. He's got a angry look on his face. He wears a black suit with the sleeves torn off. He's got tattoos of dogs like Rottweilers and pit bulls on his arms. He has a chain around his neck. His hair parts in the middle with hair hanging off the side of his head. He's got black hair with thick brown eyebrows. Overall just an intimidating looking guy. Imagine a character from Jojo or Tetsu from Yugioh and you'll get a good idea what this guy looks like. Athena is sweating nervously at the sight of him.
ATHENA CYKES:
(That's the prosecutor!? It looks like he's going to win the case by tearing me in half!)
The scary man arrives at the Prosecution bench. He smiles with his big teeth.
SCARY MAN:
Ha! Ha! Ha! I smell fresh meat!
ATHENA CYKES:
Ha. Ha. Nice to meet you sir. I- I'm Athena Cykes.
SCARY MAN:
I'm Prosecutor Barkiswurse Vanbite! I was hoping to sink my teeth into Wright, but diet Wright will do for now.
Barkiswurse Vanbite bites his teeth down to signify his intentions.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Wow, the prosecutor seems pretty scary.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Yeah, he looks like he's going to bite my head off with a single chomp! Now I'm a little more nervous.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
I know what could ease your nerves a bit. You could teach me to be a lawyer.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Why do you want me to do that?
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
I don't know! I'm just curious! There's nothing wrong with gaining some knowledge!
ATHENA CYKES:
(Trucy you truly are a puzzle.)
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
I don't know what I could teach you. You probably picked up a lot by watching your dad and Apollo.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Well, let's pretend I have never been to a court case before. Just start with the basics.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Ok... This is a courthouse, that's the judge and I'm a lawyer.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
You don't have to be THAT rudimentary.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Ok, ok.
ATHENA CYKES:
(I don't understand Trucy right now, but it should be ok. Maybe playing teacher might ease my nerves.)
The Judge slams the gavel.
JUDGE:
The court is now in session. Now begins the trial of Connie Ductor.
ATHENA CYKES:
The defense is ready your honor.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
The prosecution is chomping at the bit! Let's convict this woman!
JUDGE:
Oh... It's you Vanbite... I wasn't told you were prosecuting today...... Let's just get this over with.
ATHENA CYKES:
(The Judge doesn't seem to like Vanbite. I wonder why.)
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Connie Ductor is accused of murdering her twin brother Connor Ductor!
A photo of Connor Ductor is shown. His eyes and nose are similar to Connie's, but his head is more rectangular. He has a flat top haircut, but most of the time he's wearing his train conductor hat so it's hard to tell.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
So evil! The prosecution calls to the stand the one person who knows more about the murder than anyone else, the murderer herself!
JUDGE:
Really? You don't want to bring in the detective first?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
No need. I will scare a confession out of her! Also, the detective seems a little grumpy today!
JUDGE:
Ok then. It's your case.
The camera pans up to reveal Connie Ductor as the witness.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Look at her! That is the face of evil!
Connie Ductor looks perplexed and a little nervous at Vanbite's outburst. She pulls the imaginary train horn a couple times.
ATHENA CYKES:
(To be fair, my agency has dealt with a bunch of adorable killers in the past.)
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
Stop badgering my client and let her talk!
Vanbite growls. Athena starts sweating nervously.
ATHENA CYKES:
... please.
Connie Ductor starts tearing up and meekly looks at the ground.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
So I guess I'm here because you people think I murdered my brother... My best friend... What do you want me to talk about?
ATHENA CYKES:
Maybe you can start by talking about your background and the day leading up to you finding your brother's body.
Connie looks up and forces a smile, though she's still tearing up.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Ok, I can do that.
WITNESS TESTIMONY STARTS:
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Connor was not just my brother, but my best friend too. We did everything together. We even decided that we were going to become train drivers together.
We were taught under the prestigious train driving legend Master Chu Chu.
On the day of the murder we were given a written test. If we passed we could get our license to become a train driver. We had only one chance.
Connor passed the test. I didn't. We were shocked. I couldn't believe it. Connor didn't believe it.
He believed that Master Chu Chu must have tampered with the tests.
I didn't agree with him. I congratulated him on passing and went on a walk to calm myself down.
When I returned from my walk, I noticed that Connor left me a voice mail from a few minutes before. Connor was going to confront Master Chu Chu. I ran to stop him.
TESTIMONY ENDS:
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Ok, now it's time for us to cross examine the witness.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
I know this part! This is where we go "objection!". I love when that happens. Makes my blood rush.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
I know it's exciting, but I don't think it's time for that. I don't think our client is lying so we might have nothing to object to. I think we need to just press the witness. We'll go to a part of their testimony and "Press" them, which means we'll ask them more questions.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Ok, cool. Let's press Connie for more information.
CROSS EXAMINATION:
Press "Connor was not just my brother, but my best friend too. We did everything together. We even decided that we were going to become train drivers together."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
You two both decided to become train drivers? Why train drivers?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Our dad, Conrad Ductor, was a train driver. We use to ride with him on the train and loved it. It was like a second home to us.
ATHENA CYKES:
That's neat. Do you mind telling us more specifics of you and your brother's relationship.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Certainly! People said we were two halves of a functional person. I am knowledgable, I have a good memory, and I am mostly good at keeping up with tasks. Connor had good social skills, is a good problem solver, and was willing to stand up to people.
ATHENA CYKES:
So book smarts vs street smarts.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
That's a simplification, but yes. We compensated for each other's weaknesses. I'm very shy, meek, and problem solving always stumps me. Connor on the other hand, well he was very smart in ways I wasn't, but he was a bit of scatter brain, didn't have the best memory, and he waited til the last minute to complete tasks.
ATHENA CYKES:
He had a bad memory?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Kind of. He saw how complicated the world was and it stressed him out. He wanted to keep as many things simple as possible. Like he even told me that the alarm code to our apartment should be "1-2-3-4" claiming that anything else he wouldn't remember. We didn't go with that, but that's because I put my foot down.
ATHENA CYKES:
Ha! That's very funny.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Yeah, he wasn't dumb, he just wanted things simple.
Connie starts tearing up again.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
He was a fantastic guy... I loved him... I didn't kill him, I would never kill him!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
There's a contradiction in your statement!
CONNIE DUCTOR:
What!? There is? Where?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
You said you weren't the killer, but everyone knows that you are the killer!
JUDGE:
No Vanbite! We don't all KNOW that she's the killer! It's your job to PROVE that she's the killer! How many times do I need to tell you this!?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I don't know. Maybe a few more times and it might stick.
JUDGE:
UGH! I want to say I'm surprised, but I'm not. It's time for me to give you the first of what is probably going to be many penalties you'll receive in this case.
The Judge gives Vanbite a penalty. His Confidence Icons (a.k.a lives) are represented by dog bones.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
AW COME ON!!!
Vanbite is hiding behind the bench as much as he can. He's visibly distraught as his lip tremble and he's sweating. His pupils are huge, resembling puppy dog eyes. He does this typically when he's desperate like when he receives a penalty or his case is being dismantled.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
A penalty. You don't want to receive those. If you get five of them you lose the case. They typically happen when you make a bad deduction like presenting bad evidence and such.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Yeah, I've seen Dad get some of those. He can be a little reckless. Sounds like Vanbite gets them all the time.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Yeah, he seems pretty aggressive so it makes sense.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
... Athena... What he just said was pretty asinine. His aggressiveness might not be the only reason he receives a lot of penalties.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
... Yeah.
ATHENA CYKES:
(For some reason, I'm suddenly a lot less nervous)
Press "We were taught under the prestigious train driving legend Master Chu Chu."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
Tell me more about Master Chu Chu.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
He's a former train driver that runs his own Train Driver Dojo as he calls it. He's very particular with his students.
ATHENA CYKES:
And you two got in?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Yeah. I admit it's a bit of nepotism. My father is friends with him. He didn't want to train me at first, but father kept bugging him until he relented.
ATHENA CYKES:
He didn't want to train you and Connor?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
No, he didn't want to train... me. However, we did what we could to make up for our nepotism. Connor and I did house work and repairs at the dojo. We even had our personal tool chests at the dojo. One for me, one for Connor.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yeah, Master Chu Chu is a train driving legend! Here's a picture of him at his desk! It was from less than a week ago!
PICTURE OF MASTER CHU CHU AT DESK is added to the court record. It's a picture of Master Chu Chu sitting behind a very large desk in the shape of a modern train. There's a lot of items on the desk.
Press "On the day of the murder we were given a written test. If we passed we could get our license to become a train driver. We had only one chance."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
A written test? You think a field test would determine whether or not you get a license.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
It does. If we passed the written test we were able to take the field test which is done by a third party. I'm sorry that my wording was misleading.
ATHENA CYKES:
It's ok. One chance to pass though, that's pretty harsh.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
That's Master Chu Chu for you. He goes hard.
Press "Connor passed the test. I didn't. We were shocked. I couldn't believe it. Connor didn't believe it."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
Connor didn't believe it?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Yeah, he was so shocked. He went on and on about how I know much more about trains than him, how I studied so much harder than him, how I'm way better at taking these types of tests than him. He refused to believe that I actually failed. He started to come up with... conspiracy theories.
ATHENA CYKES:
(hmmm. Conspiracy theories? Might need to hear about the theories.)
Press "He believed that Master Chu Chu must have tampered with the tests."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
Why would Connor suspect Master Chu Chu of tampering with the test? Did he have any reason to be suspicious of him?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Well... He did... Master Chu Chu is a little... old fashioned in his thinking.
ATHENA CYKES:
Is that a euphemism for him being a bigot?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
...Maybe...Master Chu Chu is a little misogynistic.
ATHENA CYKES:
A little? I talked to Master Chu Chu. He thought I was Wright's secretary and kept making perverted comments. You're sugar coating that statement. You're practically pouring the entire bag of sugar on that statement. That statement is diabetic!
CONNIE DUCTOR:
....... He's my elder and he's well respected in our field. I have to be respectful to him.
ATHENA CYKES:
You don't have to be respectful to people who don't believe you deserve to be treated with basic dignity.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
My brother said stuff like that all the time.
ATHENA CYKES:
It sounds like your brother stood up for you more than you stood up for yourself.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
That's definitely true. He always defended me from bullies and stuff. I actually felt completely helpless when he wasn't around... What am I going to do without him?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Well you should have thought about that before you killed him!
ATHENA CYKES:
Stop badgering Connie!
Vanbite starts growling at Athena. Athena growls back, shocking Vanbite.
Press " I didn't agree with him. I congratulated him on passing and went on a walk to calm myself down."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
So you just accepted your loss?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
... It just made more sense to me that I failed the test. Maybe I wasn't meant to be a train driver.
ATHENA CYKES:
But it's your passion.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Master Chu Chu said I wasn't meant to be a train driver. That I shouldn't be attached to my father's name and go on my own path. He suggested me new jobs like teacher... housewife... secretary...... stripper.
ATHENA CYKES:
STRIPPER!?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
He said I had the body for it.
ATHENA CYKES:
YOUR FATHER IS FRIENDS WITH THIS GUY!?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Friend might have been a little strong of a word to use. Coworker might have been more accurate.
Press "When I returned from my walk, I noticed that Connor left me a voice mail from a few minutes before. Connor was going to confront Master Chu Chu. I ran to stop him."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
He left you a voicemail on your walk?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Yeah... I had my phone on silent. Didn't want to be disturbed.
ATHENA CYKES:
Do you still have the voicemail?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Of course I do. I'm not going to delete the last voicemail from my brother.
ATHENA CYKES:
Do you mind playing it for us?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Of course not.
Connie takes out her phone and starts playing the voicemail.
CONNOR DUCTOR (VOICE):
Connie! I was right! Master Chu Chu switched our test and I found proof! You look at the tests yourselves, they're on the kitchen table. I made copies of the test to bring with me. I'm going to confront Master Chu Chu to give him a chance to undo this!... We might have to tell the news or someone. You're probably not the first woman this bastard has done this to... I just knew that there was no way you failed the test... I'll be home soon. Love you sis.
JUDGE:
What!? Connor found proof that your teacher switched the tests!?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Maybe. I don't know what that proof was. Maybe he didn't have actual proof . I just don't know.
JUDGE:
Why did you try to stop him?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
He might've been wrong and I didn't want him to get in trouble.
ATHENA CYKES:
If you don't mind, I request that Connor's voicemail is added to the evidence.
JUDGE:
Request granted.
Connor's Voicemail added to court records.
The Judge slams the gavel down.
CROSS EXAMINATION ENDS:
JUDGE:
Hmmm. The accused seems to have a close relationship with her brother. I don't see what possible reason she has to kill him.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
SHE KILLED HIM BECAUSE SHE'S EEEEEVVVVVVVIIIILLLLLL!!!!
EVERYONE:
...
Vanbite looks around awkwardly. He pulls out a piece of paper and starts reading from it.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Actually, it was because she was jealous that he passed the test.
ATHENA CYKES:
That's it!? That's a very weak motivation!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I mean, does the motive really matter?
ATHENA CYKES:
Yeah it does! People usually don't kill for no reason! They especially don't kill family members for no reason!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I don't know. Connie, why did you kill your brother?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
I didn't kill my brother!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
That's just what the killer would say!
CONNIE DUCTOR:
That's also what someone who isn't the killer would say!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Your mind games won't work on me!
ATHENA CYKES:
Connie, do you mind giving another testimony? About what happened when you arrived at the school and well... found your brother's body.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
.... I think I can do that.
WITNESS TESTIMONY STARTS:
CONNIE DUCTOR:
I got on the train right after Connor's and went straight to the dojo.
I went to Master Chu Chu's Office on the second floor. Surprisingly, his door was open.
I went in and no one was there. Though I did notice that Connor's briefcase was on the desk. When I went to retrieve it, I saw Connor's body.
It was shocking seeing his body. I got on the floor and hugged his body. Begging for him to wake up. I cried until I was seen by Master Chu Chu.
He was standing in the doorway shocked. He yelled at me and then ran off. Shortly thereafter, I was arrested.
TESTIMONY ENDS:
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
That's got to be so tough, finding your brother's body. I can't imagine because I don't have siblings, but it might be something like if I found Dad's body.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Yeah, I detect so much sadness inside her. I feel bad that I'll have to cross examine her again. I don't think she's lying so it's probably not time for objections yet, just more presses.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
That's ok. Objections feel a bit inappropriate right now.
CROSS EXAMINATION BEGINS:
Press "I got on the train right after Connor's and went straight to the dojo. "
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
How do you know it was the train right after Connor's?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
I almost caught the train he was on. It was leaving just when I got there, but I saw his face through the window. I had to catch the next train.
ATHENA CYKES:
Do you remember how long it took the next train to arrive?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
8 Minutes. Like it usually does on a Wednesday.
ATHENA CYKES:
(8 minutes. That means the real killer probably had less than 8 minutes to cover their tracks. This is good for us.)
Press "I went to Master Chu Chu's Office on the second floor. Surprisingly, his door was open."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
Is it usually not open?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Master Chu Chu usually keeps it closed and locked. He's so protective of his privacy that his office has a different lock than the rest of his building. Connor and I had keys to the building and the front gate, but never a key to his office.
ATHENA CYKES:
You had keys to the dojo?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Yes, Connor and I sometimes did our upkeep of the place when Master Chu Chu wasn't there. His office was always closed and locked when I was there.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Sounds like neither Connie or Connor can get into his office without Master Chu Chu's help. It is suspicious his office door was open.)
Press "I went in and no one was there. Though I did notice that Connor's briefcase was on the desk. When I went to retrieve it, I saw Connor's body."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
You didn't immediately notice Connor's body?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
It was behind Master Chu Chu's desk. That thing is about 7 feet long and Connor's body was behind it vertically. I wasn't able to see it until I got closer.
ATHENA CYKES:
(I should probably make a mental note about that.)
Why did you feel the need to retrieve Connor's briefcase?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
I thought Connor might've forgotten it. He does that, that's why he got that specific briefcase. It's got a tracker in it and it's hard to break into. You have to know the passcode to get in.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yeah, my detectives told me it would take them 30 minutes to open this case! I told them not the bother! It's not relevant!
ATHENA CYKES:
You don't know that! It might be relevant!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Ok, if it's sooooo important, then take it!
Connor's Briefcase added to Court record.
ATHENA CYKES:
(I don't know if the briefcase is relevant, but it's nice to have access to it.)
Press "It was shocking seeing his body. I got on the floor and hugged his body. Begging for him to wake up. I cried until I was seen by Master Chu Chu."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
You got on the floor? Like you laid down next to him?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
I'm pretty sure I was on my knees leaning on him. Definitely got some of his blood on me. I probably looked pretty scary to Master Chu Chu.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yes! Got her! Now declare her guilty!
JUDGE:
I told you before Vanbite, that doesn't count as a confession!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I think it does!
JUDGE:
Ok then...... Theprosecutorwhoisabouttoreceiveapenaltysayswhat!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
What!?
The Judge gives Vanbite a penalty.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
AW COME ON! I WAS ONTO SOMETHING!
Press "He was standing in the doorway shocked. He yelled at me and then ran off. Shortly thereafter, I was arrested."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
What did Master Chu Chu yell?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
He yelled "Connie Ductor! You murdered your brother! You...... B-word."
ATHENA CYKES:
He called you a bitch.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
...Yeah... But he thought I murdered my brother so it was kind of justified.
The Judge slams the gavel down.
CROSS EXAMINATION ENDS:
JUDGE:
That's it for the testimony. Do either of you require any more testimony from Ms. Ductor?
ATHENA CYKES:
I think we have enough testimony from her.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I just need her to confess!
CONNIE DUCTOR:
I'm not doing that! I'm innocent!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
You're going to keep testifying until you confess!
CONNIE DUCTOR:
But I don't have anything else to testify. I should be done.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
You're done when I say you're done!
JUDGE:
No! She's done when I say she's done! Connie Ductor, you could go back to your seat. Call on your next witness Vanbite!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Fine! We'll call up Detective Ema Skye.
Camera pans up to reveal EMA SKYE. She's grumpily snacking.
ATHENA CYKES:
Hello Ema!
Ema smiles.
EMA SKYE:
Hey Athena! Hey Trucy!
Ema goes back to being grumpy.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Aren't you going to say hello to anyone else?
EMA SKYE:
I'm sorry, I forgot. Hey Judge!
JUDGE:
Hello Ema!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
What about me!?
EMA SKYE:
What about you?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Aren't you going to say hello to me!?
EMA SKYE:
.......................No.
ATHENA CYKES:
Ema, you seem a little down. Is something wrong?
EMA SKYE:
... I'm very dedicated to my job. I set myself a high standards to which I perform my job. Most prosecutors allow me to reach those standards. MOST prosecutors.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
You just don't like being told what to do!
EMA SKYE:
I'm fine with that. Like there's a new prosecutor named Heal Yur Payne who gets very involved in our investigations and does things differently, but she knows what she's doing and respects us. I look forward to working with her. Unlike with Vanbite, where I have legitimately considered giving myself diseases to get out of working with!
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
It sounds like Vanbite didn't let Ema do as good of a job at investigating as she wanted.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
You're right. It's probably a sloppy investigation because of this. It might finally be time for some of those Objections you like so much.
Trucy gives a sly smile.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Now you're talking.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Now with objections you need to find a part of the witness' testimony that contradicts evidence we have. Our evidence is found in the Court Records. We can check the Court Records whenever we want, and we should look close to the descriptions of the evidence or look at the evidence itself. Often the contradiction is found in very small details.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Dad does tell me that small details sometimes matter the most.
WITNESS TESTIMONY BEGINS:
EMA SKYE:
Connor Ductor was murdered on May 7th around 11:15.
He was found in the office of Master Chu Chu in his "dojo".
He was killed by blunt trauma to the left side of his head.
According to our reports, he was killed by a single blow.
A hammer was found at the scene that had Connor's blood on the face and Connie's fingerprints on the hilt.
Some people believe the hammer caused the wound that was caused by a weapon that was at least 7 inches long and 5 inches wide.
TESTIMONY ENDS:
JUDGE:
Thank you for the testimony Ms. Skye.
EMA SKYE:
No problem. I'm also here to deliver some evidence. First is the autopsy report.
Connor's Autopsy Report is added to the Court Records. The Autopsy report mentions time of death, the approximate size of the murder weapon according to the womb, that Connor was killed by a single blow to the side of his head, and that he had no other bruises on his body.
EMA SKYE:
Next is the hammer. It had Connie's fingerprints on it, which makes sense because it came from her tool chest.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Oh yeah, Connie and Connor had their own tool chests at the dojo.)
Hammer is added to Court Records. It's got Connor's blood on its face (the part you hit nails with), and Connie's fingerprints on them. The description includes the measurements like that the face has a diameter of 1 inch.
EMA SKYE:
Here are a couple of crime scene photos.
Crime Scene Photo #1 and Crime Scene Photo #2 are added to Court Records. Crime Scene Photo #1 is an overhead photo of the desk (in color). Connor's body is almost vertically laid behind the desk. Crime Scene Photo #2 is of the room from the doorway. The room seems mostly untouched. There are shelves with knick knacks. Towards the back is a huge desk in the shape of a modern train. Behind it is a window.
EMA SKYE:
Is there any other evidence you need?
ATHENA CYKES:
Actually, do you have the tests that Connie and Connor took that day?
EMA SKYE:
Certainly! Here you go!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
You brought the tests!? I told you not to bring them! They're not relevant!
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
These tests seem to be the reason Connor went to the office in the first place. I say they're definitely relevant.
JUDGE:
Athena is right. The tests will be added to the court records.
Connie and Connor's tests are added to the Court Records.
JUDGE:
Now it's time for the cross examination.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Ok, there's already something that feels off about Ema's testimony. We probably don't need to press her unless we just want to talk.
CROSS EXAMINATION:
Present Hammer on "Some people believe the hammer caused the wound that was caused by a weapon that was at least 7 inches long and 5 inches wide."
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
Some people believe the murder the weapon is the hammer? Well some people are wrong then! The diameter of the face of the hammer is only 1 inch, which is way too small to create the wound! The hammer is not the murder weapon!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
Of course it's the murder weapon! It has the victim's blood on it and the killer's fingerprints!
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
Just because it has the victim's blood doesn't make it the murder weapon! The fact that it has Connor's blood, my client's fingerprints, but doesn't match the wound suggests that someone tampered with the hammer in order to frame my client!
Vanbite reels back making a welping noise.
TRUCY WRIGHT:
Ema... No offense, but how did you not catch this?
EMA SKYE:
I did catch it... Most people at the criminal affairs department caught it. Vanbite however insisted that we still had to present the hammer as the murder weapon. We argued with him about it, and he was like "I'm in charge and you have to do what I say!" He then screamed at the mirror for some reason.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I briefly thought the mirror was another man encroaching on my territory.
ATHENA CYKES:
(If he starts marking his territory, I'm leaving this profession for good.)
EMA SKYE:
Yeah, Vanbite was in charge so I had no choice. I couldn't do anything. Well maybe I could word my testimony in a way that makes it obvious to the defense what the contradiction is,
Ema Skye smiles.
EMA SKYE:
But I would never do that.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Why is everyone making a big deal about this!? Is the murder weapon really that important!?
ATHENA CYKES:
...Yes it is! Is this your first day on the job!?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Hey! I'm not a rookie! I've been doing this for years! I was a prosecutor in Khura'in! I won most of my cases there!
ATHENA CYKES:
Khura'in huh?... Was this during the Defense Culpability Act?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yes!
ATHENA CYKES:
The law that pretty much guaranteed victory for the prosecution because there were no defense attorneys?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yes!
ATHENA CYKES:
And you won most of your cases there?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yes!
ATHENA CYKES:
.................. Most?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yes! Do I have to spell it out for you!? You look like such an idiot right now Athena!
Athena looks like she's so close to losing her mind.
ATHENA CYKES:
AM I ON A PRANK SHOW!? WHERE ARE THE HIDDEN CAMERAS!?
JUDGE:
You're not on a prank show. Vanbite is a real prosecutor.
ATHENA CYKES:
....... How!?
JUDGE:
I've asked that question so many times. I have yet to get a satisfying answer.
EMA SKYE:
By the way, you'll want to hear this your honor.
Ema gets out an audio recorder and plays it.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE (VOICE):
Hey Ema! I need you to change the autopsy report to make it look like the hammer is the murder weapon!
EMA SKYE (VOICE):
No, I'm not doing that.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE (VOICE):
Aw come on! I need to win this case!... Wait, are you recording me right now?
EMA SKYE (VOICE):
No.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE (VOICE):
But the audio recorder you're holding has its lights on! That means it's recording right!?
EMA SKYE (VOICE):
Nope!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE (VOICE):
That's good. It would be really bad if you were recording me right now.
JUDGE:
Hmmm. You told Detective Skye to tamper with evidence. That's worth a penalty.
The Judge gives Vanbite another penalty.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Y'ALL ARE BEING VINDICTIVE!
Athena has a big smile.
ATHENA CYKES:
It looks like your case has crumbled with just one objection Vanbite.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
No it hasn't! I still have my witness! The prestigious train driver Master Chu Chu! Let's call him to the stand!
Athena Cykes stops smiling. Ema Skye walks over to the defense bench and leans on the area next to Athena.
ATHENA CYKES:
Oh yeah. We'll still have to talk to... him.
EMA SKYE:
$20 says it will take less than a minute for Trucy to hate this guy.
ATHENA CYKES:
Trucy's really sweet. I bet that it will take at least a minute before she hates him.
TRUCY WRIGHT:
What if I don't hate him?
EMA SKYE:
That's not happening.
The camera pans up revealing Master Chu Chu as the witness. Master Chu Chu has a look very similar to a Chinese Master of martial arts, specifically Pai Mei from Kill Bill (who is inspired by Bak Mei). He's got thick white eyebrows, a long beard, and long white hair. He has a top knot bun on his hair that is in the shape of a train chimney. He carries a short staff. He's standing tall with his chest puffed out. He generally has an aura of self importance.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Really? Connie's still going with the female attorney? Is just confessing to the crime too much for her?
ATHENA CYKES:
Yes, she's still going with the female Attorney.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Wait, is that Trucy Wright standing next to you? God! It's a shame that the Gramarye legacy went to a girl! The only way I would see a show by a female magician is if she was willing to show some skin, which you're clearly not willing to do. No wonder your ticket sales are tanking!
Trucy turns to Athena.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Athena, you owe Ema $20.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
I figured.
JUDGE:
Would the witness like to introduce himself.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Of course! I am Master Chu Chu legendary Train Driver!
JUDGE:
What makes you a legendary train driver?
MASTER CHU CHU:
I don't know what exactly makes me a legend, I just am one. I opened my own dojo to train future train drivers. It's a terrible shame what happened in my office. I knew I shouldn't have trained Connie, I just knew she wasn't meant to be a train driver.
ATHENA CYKES:
Why do you think she wasn't meant to be a train driver?
MASTER CHU CHU:
Because she's female.
ATHENA CYKES:
Wow! You're not even going to try to use euphemisms! You're just going to be blatantly misogynistic!
JUDGE:
Sir, that kind of attitude isn't appropriate.
MASTER CHU CHU:
I'm just saying that hard truth. There are some jobs that women aren't meant to have, like train driver, politician, comedian, detective, magician and attorney.
Ema, Athena and Trucy are all visibly angry.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Great, not only do I have to deal with Vanbite, but I have to deal with this guy as well. When is this trial going to end?)
So you really think women can't be train drivers?
MASTER CHU CHU:
I know they can't. Not a single woman has passed my course!
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
I have a feeling he's technically right, but there's a lot of context missing.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
I agree. Connor might be right.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Wise Master Chu Chu, please give your testimony on what you saw that day.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Will do.
WITNESS TESTIMONY BEGINS:
MASTER CHU CHU:
I walked back to my office and found the door was ajar.
When I entered the room I saw Connie Ductor covered in blood. She had a crazed look in her eye.
I yelled at her and she turned around. It looked like she was going to attack me.
I ran away and immediately called the police!
TESTIMONY ENDS:
JUDGE:
Ok, now it's time for the cross examination.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
So what are we going to do here? Pressing or objecting?
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
I think we need to do both. I feel like there's something off about his testimony, but I can't place my finger on it. Sometimes you need to press the witness first to have them clarify information. Sometimes they make amendments to their testimony. Sometimes those amendments and clarifications are where we find the contradictions.
CROSS EXAMINATION:
Press "When I entered the room I saw Connie Ductor covered in blood. She had a crazed look in her eye."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
How far did you enter the room?
MASTER CHU CHU:
What do you think!? I didn't walk in the room that far at all. I saw a woman covered in blood. I stopped in the doorway.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Should I have Master Chu Chu add that to his testimony)
OPTIONS:
Add to Testimony
Don't Add to Testimony
Choose "Add to Testimony"
ATHENA CYKES:
Change your testimony to include that information.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Ok fine.
When I entered the room, I immediately stopped in the doorway. I saw Connie Ductor covered in blood. She had a crazed look in her eye.
Press "I yelled at her and she turned around. It looked like she was going to attack me."
ATHENA CYKES:
HOLD IT!
What did you yell at her?
MASTER CHU CHU:
I yelled "Connie Ductor! You murdered your brother!? You bitch!"
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
That's exactly what Connie said he said.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Yeah, it's consistent. I still feel like something about his testimony doesn't make sense though.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Should I have Master Chu Chu add that to his testimony)
OPTIONS:
Add to Testimony
Don't Add to Testimony
Choose "Add to Testimony"
ATHENA CYKES:
Master Chu Chu! I think you should add what you yelled to your testimony.
MASTER CHU CHU:
I don't see the point, but fine!
I yelled "Connie Ductor! You murdered your brother! You Bitch!" She turned around. It looked like she was going to attack me.
Present Crime Scene Photo #2 on "I yelled "Connie Ductor! You murdered your brother! You Bitch!" She turned around. It looked like she was going to attack me."
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
So you yelled that Connie murdered her brother?
MASTER CHU CHU:
Yes I did.
ATHENA CYKES:
That means you must have seen Connor's body when you entered the room.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Of course I did!
ATHENA CYKES:
That's impossible!
MASTER CHU CHU:
What!?
ATHENA CYKES:
Look at this crime scene photo that was taken from the doorway. As you can see, the desk is so large that you cannot see Connor's body behind it! There is no way Master Chu Chu could see Connor's body from the doorway!
Master Chu Chu is shocked. Steam comes from the top of his bun, and train noises are heard. This typically happens when you catch him in a lie.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
Of course Master Chu Chu was able to see Connor's body! How else would he know that Connie killed Connor!
ATHENA CYKES:
I think I have an explanation for how Master Chu Chu knew Connor's body was there.
OPTIONS:
He was guessing
He was in a different part of the room
He is the real killer
Choose "He is the real kiler"
ATHENA CYKES:
The reason he knew Connor's body was behind the desk is because that's where he left it!
JUDGE:
Wait, are you saying
ATHENA CYKES:
Yes! Master Chu Chu was the one who killed Connor Ductor!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
This piece of evidence contradicts your claim!
Vanbite presents " Picture of Master Chu Chu at desk"
JUDGE:
.... How does that contradict Athena's claim?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I don't know. I thought you would know.
JUDGE:
.......................
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
.....................
JUDGE:
.....................
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
.............. I'm getting another penalty aren't I?
JUDGE:
Yes you are.
The Judge gives Vanbite another penalty. He only has one confidence icon left.
JUDGE:
That's 4 penalties Vanbite. You get one more and you lose the case.
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
I know this sounds weird, but I request that you do not give Vanbite any more penalties for the remainder of this trial!
JUDGE:
Really? Why?
ATHENA CYKES:
My client loved her brother and is innocent! Her getting off on a technicality like that is not good enough!
JUDGE:
Ok then. I will not give Vanbite any more penalties in this trial, but he's your responsibility now.
ATHENA CYKES:
Don't worry. I'll remember to feed him and take him on walks.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Ha! Ha! Ha! You're going to regret that Athena!
ATHENA CYKES:
(I probably will.)
JUDGE:
So Master Chu Chu, do you have anything to say about Ms. Cykes' accusation?
MASTER CHU CHU:
It's a hysterical outburst! Not worth taking seriously. Must be her time of the month. This is why women shouldn't be attorneys, they should be real men like the prosecutor over there.
Vanbite is looking frantically around the room.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I think I see a squirrel in here!
ATHENA CYKES:
Master Chu Chu, there is no other way you could have known Connor's body was behind the desk. You are lying.
MASTER CHU CHU:
I misspoke. I didn't see Connor's body, but I knew it was there by simple deduction.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
You tried to seduce the murderer!?
MASTER CHU CHU:
No! Deduction! Not seduction!
Master Chu Chu starts stroking his beard and smiling to himself.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Though I could've seduced her if I wanted to.
ATHENA CYKES:
(I want to tell him he's wrong, but Connie's so insecure that he might've been able to.)
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Master Chu Chu, please give us a testimony on your deduction.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Certainly!
WITNESS TESTIMONY:
MASTER CHU CHU:
I was in my dojo meditating when Connor came in.
Connor wanted to talk so we went upstairs to my office.
We had a pleasant conversation. He just wanted to thank me for being a great sensei.
I had tea running down stairs. When the kettle went off I went downstairs to turn the stove off. Leaving Connor in my office.
When I returned I found Connie covered in blood. Since Connor was gone, I deduced that she killed Connor. That's why I yelled that.
TESTIMONY ENDS:
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
You're certain this guy is our killer?
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Yes, he shouldn't have been able to see Connor's body and it was found in his office which he usually locks. Also he's the only witness so it's a good guess.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Good. I'm glad you're certain. Let's take this guy down so our client can walk away free!
CROSS EXAMINATION:
Present Connor's Voicemail on "We had a pleasant conversation. He just wanted to thank me for being a great sensei."
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
You had a pleasant conversation? I don't believe that for one second.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Of course we did! He was respecting his sensei!
ATHENA CYKES:
I guess you didn't know Connor left his sister a voicemail
before he left telling her why he was leaving.
MASTER CHU CHU:
What!?
Athena plays Connor's Voicemail.
ATHENA CYKES:
You see, Connor was confronting you about you switching the tests! There's no way that your conversation was pleasant!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
You claim Connor was confronting Master Chu Chu about switching the tests? He had no good reason to do that. If Master Chu Chu really switched the tests, that means Connor actually failed the test! It would go against his self interests to confront Master Chu Chu!
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
From what we've been told, Connor sounds like a great guy and a great brother! He wasn't going to let someone do this to his sister even if it did hurt his own career!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
How did Connor find proof that Master Chu Chu switched the tests then? What would his proof even be?
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
Connor must have clearly looked at the tests while Connie was on her walk. Connor must have noticed that the test he wrote wasn't his!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
How is that possible? This test is made up entirely of multiple choice questions! Even a person with a really good memory is not going to remember everything they answer on a test like that! Much less someone like Connor who has been described as having a bad memory!
Everyone is shocked.
JUDGE:
... Vanbite! You just made a good point!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I did!?
JUDGE:
Yeah, you did! You paid attention and used evidence effectively! Good job!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yay!!!
JUDGE:
Here's a cookie!
The Judge throws Vanbite a cookie. He catches it in his mouth.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
You know what, I'm actually kind of proud of him.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Yeah, well his good point is bad for our case! How did Connor notice that the tests were switched?
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Maybe you should look through the test and find a page where he would notice they were switched.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Good idea.
You scroll through the pages. All the pages are multiple choice.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Damn! All these pages are multiple choice questions. Though this test seems weird. Like page 1 ends at question 10 and page 2 begins at question 21.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Athena, did you look the backs of the papers?
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
.................No.
Athena flips the papers. You now scroll though the backs of the papers. Each page is still multiple choice except the final one which is an essay question. Present the Essay question page.
ATHENA CYKES:
TAKE THAT!
Vanbite, I know you've probably heard this all the time, but it seems you forgot to the check the back of the paper on your test! There's a question you missed!
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Do you really have any right to be condescending to Vanbite here? You made the same mistake.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
SSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH!!!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I don't understand what you're saying!
ATHENA CYKES:
On the back of the final page, there is an essay question!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
What!? An essay question!
ATHENA CYKES:
Yes. An essay question. Now even someone with a bad memory can tell the difference between something they wrote and something they didn't! That is how Connor noticed the test they switched!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
Ok! Ok! Maybe he would notice that he didn't write the essay on his test, but can that really be counted as proof!? He could claim he didn't write the essay, but he probably can't prove it!
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Hmmm, Vanbite is actually making a good point again. He's improving a bit.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Maybe there's something in the essays that proves who wrote it. We should check them.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Good idea.
You scroll through the essays to find the part that doesn't make sense. This sounds like an arduous task, but finding the part that doesn't make sense isn't that hard. In Connor's Essay there's an underlined line. The underlined line is "I love traveling on trains, but as a woman I don't always feel safe on them". Present that line.
ATHENA CYKES:
TAKE THAT!
Here's a line from Connor's essay that proves the tests were switched. "I love traveling on trains, but as a woman I don't always feel safe on them".
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I don't see what's wrong with that line. Violence against women is a very prevalent problem in this patriarchal society.
ATHENA CYKES:
First of all, that is very true. I'm shocked how socially aware you are.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Hey! I went to marches!
ATHENA CYKES:
Secondly, you misheard me. This line was from Connor's essay. You know, Connor. Who's a guy. Why would a guy write "As a woman"?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I don't know, maybe he's just very quirky!
ATHENA CYKES:
Or maybe Master Chu Chu switched the tests and missed that part! Another thing that makes me think this line wasn't meant to be here is that it's underlined. I'm thinking it was underlined by Connor Ductor!
TRUCY WRIGHT:
Honestly, I think most of us are missing something. We can prove who wrote which essay with an analysis by a hand writing expert.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Yeah, but that would just take too much time! Let's just declare Connie guilty and save time!
EMA SKYE:
Actually it's already been done. I had handwriting experts looks at the essays. The essay on Connor's test was written by Connie and vice versa. The tests were definitely switched!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I told you specifically not to do that Ema!
EMA SKYE:
Yes you did, and I did it anyway.
MASTER CHU CHU:
You insubordinate wench! You should've listened to your boss!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
It seems you're going to some salary cuts very soon!
EMA SKYE:
No I'm not. I've heard I'm slated for a raise.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Not anymore! I'm cutting your salary! It will be like I'm a lawnmower and your salary is like whatever lawnmowers cut.
EMA SKYE:
You can't do that. Prosecutors don't have the power to cut detective's salaries.
ATHENA CYKES:
I thought they did.
EMA SKYE:
They use to, but prosecutors were abusing that privilege way too much. So many detectives left because of this. They had to pass a law taking that power away from prosecutors. It was called the Edgeworth Law.
TRUCY WRIGHT:
It was named after Edgeworth? Did he come up with the law.
EMA SKYE:
No. It was named after him for pettier reasons.
ATHENA CYKES:
We're getting off track. What's important is that we proved that Master Chu Chu did in fact switch the tests. This is why he killed Connor Ductor! Connor Ductor found proof he switched the tests and Master Chu Chu killed him to keep him silent!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
So he switched some tests and was getting called out for it, so what!?
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
So what!? If people find out that he is sabotaging women's chances at a career, it would lead to a scandal. It might destroy his career and reputation. Not to mention the lawsuits from other women who "failed" his course. They would have a good case for gender discrimination. Though the potential laws
uits are probably going to be the least of his problems now.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Ok fine! I switched the tests! I did it because women are naturally unfit to be train drivers and should not be allowed in the field!
ATHENA CYKES:
If that was true, then you wouldn't feel the need to switch the tests! You're just an insecure loser!
MASTER CHU CHU:
You disrespectful harlot!
ATHENA CYKES:
Insult me all you want, it won't change the fact that you killed Connor Ductor!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
You keep insisting Master Chu Chu killed Connor, but that makes no sense. Your story makes it sound like that got in a fight, but if that's the case then Connor would win. Connor is a strapping young man, and Master Chu Chu is geriatric!
MASTER CHU CHU:
Hey! I could totally beat Connor in a.........................Actually you're completely right! I can't beat Connor in a fight
Master Chu Chu bends over and leans on his staff like a cane. His body is shaking and he's squinting his eyes. Basically he's doing everything he can to look as old as possible.
MASTER CHU CHU:
I'm just a weak feeble old man!
ATHENA CYKES:
Are you seriously trying to pull this right now!?
Master Chu Chu puts his hand behind his ear.
MASTER CHU CHU:
I'm sorry young lady. I can't hear you. My hearing is going out at my old age.
ATHENA CYKES:
You're only 57!!!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Oh my god! Athena is being abusive towards the elderly!
ATHENA CYKES:
GGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
MASTER CHU CHU:
I was telling a little bitty fib earlier, but I was doing it for Connor's sake. He's usually such a nice young man, but he was in a sour mood.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Please tell us what really happened.
MASTER CHU CHU:
Certainly. It's so nice that you know how to respect your elders.
WITNESS TESTIMONY:
MASTER CHU CHU:
Yes, fine I switched the tests, but it was for society's own good.
Connor was really angry that I switched the tests so he came in yelling at me.
The yelling escalated to a physical altercation. I got few hits in, but Connor was stronger. He knocked me out.
When I woke up, I saw Connie standing over Connor's body.
I'm so sorry I lied. I was just trying to protect Connor. He's usually so nice.
TESTIMONY ENDS:
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
I can't believe he's pulling the "weak old man" card now.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
You should be happy about this. He seems to be a prideful man, so him demeaning himself like this is a sign he's getting desperate. We almost have him!
ATHENA CYKES:
( I hope Trucy is right.)
CROSS EXAMINATION:
Note: If you try to press any of Master Chu Chu's statements, he'll just act like he can't hear you.
Present Connor's Autopsy Report on "The yelling escalated to a physical altercation. I got few hits in, but Connor was stronger. He knocked me out."
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
I completely agree with you Master Chu Chu. You can't beat Connor in a fight. Not because you're old, but because you're lame.
MASTER CHU CHU:
What!?
ATHENA CYKES:
I mean that "dojo" you have just looks like a regular school. Also "Master" Chu Chu! I'm guessing you gave that name to yourself. It's clear you demean women because of how insecure you are. You can't compare to most men so you tell yourself "at least I'm not a woman". Though you are in complete denial that most women are cooler than you too! Because you're lame!
Master Chu Chu gets very angry. He starts screaming. He stands up straight again while tons of steam comes out of his top knot bun. He's dropped the weak old man act.
MASTER CHU CHU:
You're a bitch!
ATHENA CYKES:
Yes I am.
JUDGE:
I agree that this guy is incredible lame
MASTER CHU CHU:
Hey!
JUDGE:
but do you have an actual point?
ATHENA CYKES:
I do. Master Chu Chu couldn't beat Connor in a fight, but that doesn't matter. There wasn't a fight. According to the autopsy report, Connor was killed by a single blow with no bruises! Connor didn't escalate this to violence. Connor was probably was just raising his voice, and Master Chu Chu grabbed a blunt object and hit Connor on the head. Doesn't matter how strong you are, one hit from a blunt object in just the right spot is enough to kill someone!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
You're saying Master Chu Chu killed Connor with a blunt object?
ATHENA CYKES:
Yes!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
What blunt object?
ATHENA CYKES:
Wh-what?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
What blunt object did Master Chu Chu use to kill Connor?
ATHENA CYKES:
...... I'm not sure.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Oh really!? The murder weapon was soooooo important earlier, but I guess it's not anymore! Say what you will about the hammer, but at least I can point to it! It may not be perfect, but it's here for me! Your murder weapon is imaginary!
ATHENA CYKES:
We'll just need to search the school and we'll find it.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
It's already been done! The police searched the entire school and surrounding area! They found nothing!
EMA SKYE:
... Unfortunately, Vanbite is right. He actually let us do our search and we found nothing. The only blunt object we found with Connor's blood on it was the hammer.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Seems like the hammer is murder weapon then!
ATHENA CYKES:
But it doesn't match the wound on the autopsy report!
MASTER CHU CHU:
Guess the autopsy report must be wrong then. This is why you don't get a woman to be a medical examiner.
EMA SKYE:
Our medical examiner is a man.
MASTER CHU CHU:
.......... Men can be incompetent too.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
Damn it! Vanbite's starting to behave like an actual prosecutor!
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
What are we going to do? The murder weapon could be anything in that room.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
... No it can't.
Trucy takes off her hat, undoes her ponytail and shakes her head to fluff her hair out. She now has a more sly look on her face.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
We can easily deduce the location of the murder weapon due to the location of Connor's body. His body was behind the desk on the right side. We can assume he was facing the left side of the room because of his bodies' position and how he was struck on the left side. We can assume Master Chu Chu was facing him since they were having a confrontation meaning Master Chu Chu was facing the right of the room. Now since we know Master Chu Chu is right handed.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
We do?
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Yes, did you notice how he uses his right hand almost exclusively?
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
......... I did not.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Anyway, since he is right handed he probably grabbed something off the desk on his right side. Given their assumed position we can pinpoint the murder weapon's location to the top left of the desk. Luckily we got a break. We have a photo of Master Chu Chu at his desk from a couple days before the murder and this crime scene photo where we can see the desk clearly. We just need to play a game of spot the difference and we find the murder weapon.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
....... Trucy... What the hell?
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
What? I'm just trying to help.
Trucy ties her hair back in a ponytail and puts her hat back on. She reverts back to her usual smile.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Trucy right now was just weird... Yet strangely normal. Her emotions felt genuine. Did I just see another side of Trucy?)
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
So can you point out the murder weapon?
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Probably, but I was going to let you do it because it's your case.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Ok, all I need is to spot a blunt object that is in the promotional photo, but not in the crime photo. I should probably look for something on the top left part of the desk.)
It goes to a screen where you can switch between Picture of Master Chu Chu at desk and Crime Scene Photo #1. You select the bust of the modern train in Picture of Master Chu Chu at desk, and present it.
ATHENA CYKES:
TAKE THAT!
I can point to my murder weapon too Vanbite. It's this bust of a train on Master Chu Chu's desk. As you can see the bust is present in the photo taken before the murder, but not in the photo taken after. It went missing for some reason. That reason being that Master Chu Chu disposed of it because it was covered in Connor's blood after he used it to kill him. So Master Chu Chu, what happened to the bust?
MASTER CHU CHU:
The bust?... Well... The day before the murder... I realized that bust was really really tacky! So I went out back and smashed it with a sledgehammer!
Master Chu Chu slams his staff on his podium to demonstrate what he's talking about.
ATHENA CYKES:
Yeah, sure. You just happen to destroy the object that is likely the murder weapon before the murder. Like we're going to believe that.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I believe it!
ATHENA CYKES:
Of course you do. Come on, this is really suspicious!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I don't think so, if anything I'm now more convinced of Connie's guilt!
JUDGE:
Athena, without the murder weapon, your claims are just speculation. You need to find proof.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Seriously? Sometimes I think our clients are guilty until proven innocent.)
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
What are we going to do now? Master Chu Chu could've disposed the murder weapon anywhere.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
From what we learned, it seems like he didn't really have time to dispose of the murder weapon properly. We learned earlier that Connie arrived at most 8 minutes after Connor, but I think Mater Chu Chu had less time to fake a crime scene.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
You do?
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Yes. He tried to frame Connie. I think the reason he did that was that he saw her coming from his window and decided to make her his patsy.
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
If that's the case then he wouldn't have much time at all.
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Yes, and in that short time he had to tamper with the hammer, hide the murder weapon and hide somewhere so he can "walk in and be a witness". That's a lot to do in a short time. He had to have hid it at the school!
ATHENA CYKES (TO TRUCY):
But they couldn't find it! The police searched everywhere!
TRUCY WRIGHT (TO ATHENA):
Did they? It seems there was stuff that Vanbite didn't allow the police to search. Maybe it's hidden in one of those places.
ATHENA CYKES:
(Trucy is right. Vanbite's micromanaging prevented the police from searching certain places. Is it possible the murder weapon is hidden there? Where could the murder weapon be hidden?)
Present Connor's Briefcase
ATHENA CYKES:
TAKE THAT!
I think I know exactly where the murder weapon is hidden! You claimed that the police searched everywhere in the school, well that's not true! They didn't search Connor's Briefcase!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
You're saying that the murder weapon's hidden in the briefcase? That's impossible? Master Chu Chu couldn't open it!
ATHENA CYKES:
OBJECTION!
I'm thinking the briefcase was open already at the time by Connor Ductor! He was bringing copies of the test to show Master Chu Chu. It's not a stretch to say he kept the tests in the briefcase and opened the briefcase to take them out.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Ok! Ok! That's great and all, but what do it matter!? We can't open the briefcase so what's in there will always be one of life's greatest mysteries!
ATHENA CYKES:
( We probably can if given enough time, but I feel like I can get it open quickly. I remember Connie saying something about his brother and codes. I think I know what the code is.)
Press 1-2-3-4 on the briefcase. It pop opens.
MASTER CHU CHU:
YOU GOT THE BRIEFCASE OPEN!? HOW!?
ATHENA CYKES:
I remembered something Connie said earlier about how her brother liked to keep things simple, and I was able to deduce the code. Now let's see what's in the case.
Athena opens the case. The bust of the train is inside it. It's covered in blood.
JUDGE:
There's the bust!
ATHENA CYKES:
Now all we need to do is have Ema run some tests on it. We'll see if it is the true murder weapon!
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
Ema is very busy so I don't think we'll have time to run tests. I think we should just declare Connie Ductor guilty and go home.
EMA SKYE:
No, I have time.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Are you sure!? You always say you're really busy!
EMA SKYE:
I have time. Even if I didn't, I would make time to take down this scumbag.
MASTER CHU CHU:
These women are conspiring against me!
JUDGE:
No, they're just doing their jobs. Ema, run your tests.
EMA SKYE:
Don't worry, this won't take too long.
There's a fade to black. When they fade back, Ema is wearing disposable gloves and is holding the bust of a train.
EMA SKYE:
This bust is the perfect size to be the murder weapon. The blood on the bust belongs to Connor Ductor. The only fingerprints on this bust belong to Master Chu Chu. This bust was definitely the murder weapon and the fingerprints prove that Master Chu Chu is the real killer!
MASTER CHU CHU:
NO!
ATHENA CYKES:
We have proven Connie Ductor innocent of her brother's murder!
Athena points at Master Chu Chu.
ATHENA CYKES:
As for you Master Chu Chu! It's time to get off the train, because
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
Maybe the bust is the murder weapon, but can we really be sure the hammer isn't the murder weapon?
ATHENA CYKES:
Yes we can! The hammer doesn't match the wound! It's not the murder weapon! Give it up!
Athena points at Master Chu Chu.
ATHENA CYKES:
As for you Master Chu Chu! It's time to get off the train, because
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
Connie Ductor must have used the bust as the murder and planted Master Chu Chu's fingerprints on it!
ATHENA CYKES:
How did she do that!?
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I don't know. Let's bring Connie back and ask her.
ATHENA CYKES:
No! You lost the case! Get over it!
Athena points at Master Chu Chu.
ATHENA CYKES:
As for you Master Chu Chu! It's time to get off the train, because
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Objection!
Athena looks like she's about to scream. Trucy pulls out a spray bottle from her hat.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
PLEASE!!! I HAVEN'T WON A CASE IN A LONG TIME!!! LET ME HAVE T
HIS!!!
ATHENA CYKES:
NO! We're not letting you convict an innocent woman so you can feel better about yourself! Go to therapy!!!
Athena points at Master Chu Chu.
ATHENA CYKES:
As for you Master Chu Chu! It's time to get off the train, because
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
OBJECTION!
Vanbite has his arms crossed like a little kid.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
I'm not giving up until we declare Connie guilty!
Trucy sprays him with the spray bottle.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
AW!!! I DON'T LIKE BEING SPRAYED WITH WATER!!!
Vanbite runs away.
ATHENA CYKES:
Good. We have Vanbite taken care of. Good work Trucy!
TRUCY WRIGHT:
Happy to help.
Athena points at Master Chu Chu.
ATHENA CYKES:
As for you Master Chu Chu! It's time to get off the train, because this is the end of the line!
Breakdown time. Master Chu Chu has his mouth agape. The background behind him turns black. He looks around frantically, he's on a train track. A train starts driving on the track towards Master Chu Chu. Connie, Athena, Trucy and Ema stick their heads out the windows of the train and start happily waving at Master Chu Chu. He screams before the train hits him, launching him cartoonishly in the air. It cuts back to the courtroom. Master Chu Chu still has his mouth agape with his eyes glazed over. A couple of puffs of smoke come out of his top knot bun, before he falls over backwards.
The scene fades to white, and fades back to the court room. Connie is now standing on the witness stand, she is smiling.
JUDGE:
........Well that was certainly a headache of a trial. At least it all turned out ok. Now it's time to pass judgement. This court finds the defendant Connie Ductor
The words "Not Guilty" come on the screen. There is a celebration in the crowd. Connie pulls the imaginary train whistle a couple more times.
INT. LOBBY
Athena, Ema, Trucy and Connie are standing around.
ATHENA CYKES:
Wow... That was a close one!
TRUCY WRIGHT:
............ Really?
ATHENA CYKES:
No! That was easy!
EMA SKYE:
Yeah. It was a very rushed very sloppy murder. Connie wouldn't have been put on trial at all if this case had a halfway competent prosecutor.
Barkiswurse Vanbite shows up.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
You know it's very rude to talk about someone behind their back!
EMA SKYE:
Ok, I'll do it to your face then. You're an idiot.
BARKISWURSE VANBITE:
Well... You're... Mean!!!
Vanbite runs off crying.
TRUCY WRIGHT:
Another piece good news is that since it's been confirmed that you passed the test, you can now take the field test and become a train driver!
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Yup! Thank you both so much for helping me!
Connie Ductor pulls her imaginary train horn a couple times. She then pauses for a second before bursting into tears.
ATHENA CYKES:
Connie?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
............ He was just standing up for me.
ATHENA CYKES:
Oh... Your brother.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
What am I going to do without him?
TRUCY WRIGHT:
I don't know... You'll just have to keep on living.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
We were going to become train drivers together!
TRUCY WRIGHT:
Yes... Now you'll just have to do it without him. Connor wouldn't want you to give up.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
..... You're right... He wouldn't.
Connie smiles, though she's still crying.
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Now... I'll be twice the train driver for both of us!
Connie pulls the imaginary train horn a couple more times.
ATHENA CYKES:
............... Do you want a hug?
CONNIE DUCTOR:
Yes!!!
EMA SKYE:
Group hug!
The case ends on a image of Athena, Trucy and Ema hugging Connie.
It cuts to a screen with a kinetic background. A mugshot photo of Master Chu Chu slides into the frame. He's holding a card with his name on it. He's very angry and steam is coming out of his top knot bun. Giant red text reading "30 Years in Prison" is stamped on top of the mugshot.
