sightreading story time

(the trouble with first violinists)

so we were about to sightread hoedown from rodeo in orchestra the other day and we could not catch the tempo so my teacher made us put our instruments down and she gave us a pickup and the downbeat and then we had to silently count the beats in our heads and start clapping on one of the next measure. it took us several tries to do that and then we started playing hoedown again. the problem was that the violins just could not get the tempo. my teacher restarted several times to give them an opportunity to get it themselves and then had the lower strings play it so they could hear the right tempo. the violins still didn’t get it. then the violas played with the violins, seeing as we had similar parts and the violas, as always, were playing correctly. still the violins couldn’t get the fucking tempo. then my best friend speaks up and finally informs our teacher that the first violins aren’t getting the tempo because our concert master is playing too fast and he's confusing the rest of the section. he was like ‘it was just this one time’ no it wasn’t you idiot you always think you’re right even when you are not. just because you’re the best player in this orchestra doesn’t mean that you are the yo-yo ma of violinists. shut up
