Steve was staring at you. Hard.
Family Video was completely deserted of customers, almost. Besides Eddie Munson who was leaning against some VHS tapes in the horror section as he talked to you and made you smile a little too hard. As he so clearly flirted with you when you were supposed to be working and stocking the shelves back up.
And Steve didn't like it, not one bit.
"Just go confess your love for her already, Harrington." Robin mutters under her breath for only Steve to hear, causing him to break out of his stare and flinch away from the front counter, turning around to face Robin who was holding a stack of old VHS tapes.
Steve grimaces. "What the hell are you talking about?" His eyes not so secretly drifting back to you and Eddie as he awaits her response.
Robin scoffs. "Dude you've been giving Eddie the death stare for the last 20 minutes, you looked like you were about to explode. And I swear I didn't see you blink once." Robin pauses as her gaze softens, only a little, before saying, "You're clearly jealous and you just don't have the guts to admit it."
Steve groaned, frustrated almost. "Robin you can't just make stuff up like that, what if she heard you." He quickly glances at you before facing Robin again. "Okay look, she is my friend. That's it."
Robin just rolls her eyes. "Whatever, keep telling yourself that Steve." She sighs at him as she walks away with her VHS tapes.

By closing time, Eddie and Robin have left, leaving you and Steve alone to lock up.
Normally, you and Steve would have some kind of banter or small talk going on but tonight it's oddly quiet.
You're unsure why, but then as you and Steve walk towards the exit together, you notice how his shoulders were tense, his jaw tight, and he looked like he was ready to punch something.
Right before reaching the doors, you stop. "Hey Steve..." you say softly. "Are you okay? You seem a bit off tonight."
"I'm fine" Steve snaps, not even glancing at you, but he must've seen the small look of surprise you gave him out of the corner of his eye because he sighed before saying, with less attitude, "I'm fine, just tired."
You know Steve well enough to tell that he's lying, that's why you pushed, just a little. "Are you sure? I feel like you've been acting a bit weird all shift. Was it something I did?" You didn't think you had done anything but your own overthinking and insecurities were getting to your head.
Steve finally turns toward you and snaps again. "I just don't get it. What's the deal with you and Eddie? And why the hell do you have to flirt with him throughout our entire shift, it's annoying."
Your stomach starts to twist but you ignore it. "Me and Eddie Munson? Flirt?" You laugh right in his face. "Me and Eddie are just friends, you know this Steve. Him and I have been friends since we were kids. Always will be."
Steve runs his hands through his hair. "Yeah... I should've known, well I do know. Guys like him don't really get with girls like you."
"What?" Your entire body froze. "What the hell is that supposed to mean Steve?"
His eyes widen and puts his hands out, almost reaching for you, as he realizes what he said didn't sound right, "Wait no that's not–"
"No you can just fuck off Steve" You say as your throat tightens a little and your eyes start to sting but you won't let him see you cry, especially over something so stupid. "I know I've never dated anyone and that I'm not your type, or probably anyone's type for that matter, but you don't get to act or say things like that."
He tries to speak, to explain that's not what he meant but you just ignore him. You look at him one last time before quickly walking out the doors and letting them slam shut behind you.
Steve doesn't move. He just stands there, thinking back on what he just did. "Fuck me," he groans, rubbing his hands over his face and then through his hair in frustration or maybe it's regret.
He hadn't meant to hurt you. He hadn't even meant to say those words, they just came out wrong. He just didn't want to admit that a girl as perfect as you deserves so much more, much more than himself or Eddie could ever give you.
Eddie. He thinks. It wasn't even really about him.
He realizes that Robin was right. He was jealous. Jealous that someone else had your attention, that someone else got to make you smile so hard that your face hurt.
Now it was Steve's turn for his throat to tighten. "What have I done?" He asks himself.
