Your life was a complicated story filled with twists and turns down dark narrow paths. You knew you were different ever since you found out who your birth father was. It wasn't very... Pleasant news, to say the least. You knew your mother and father were not your birth parents. It was quite obvious from their genes. Their hair color contracted yours, along with their eye colors. From an early age, you knew something had happened that caused your true parents to abandon you and leave with another couple. You didn't find out why until much later on.
But now it seemed like everything was coming together. Receiving your Hogwarts letter, you knew, like your adoptive parents, that you were destined for greatness. Though, they were persistent in wanting you in the house of Slytherin. You knew not of the power of the houses, nor their dynamics. Yet, you were wise and cunning for your age, and so they were hopeful that you'd get in.
FIRST YEAR
Walking into the Grand Hall, you looked around in awe at the marvelous space. There were tables running the whole length of the hall, made of brown oak. The Great Hall felt more like a ballroom than a lunchroom. As you walked towards the front of the grand room, you stood with the other first years, waiting to be sorted.
The sorting process was quick, with each student being called to sit and let the magical hat decide their house. Being held under so much stress of getting into Slytherin ate away at you slowly. You just hoped to get in, if anything, as long as it wasn't Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. You didn't want to have to deal with people who would judge you because of your heritage. You might even be forced to face certain death. But no one would choose Slytherin over Ravenclaw, right?
"Miss Y/N!" McGonagall called you up.
The Sorting Hat's voice boomed throughout the Great Hall. "Behold! I shall sort you by virtue, and see what house you belong to!"
You walked up the small set of stairs and hopped onto the stool as the older witch placed the magical hat on your head.
Immediately, he spoke, "Ah! Interesting. Cunning and ambitious. Yet, you're also smart and witty. Courageous and trustworthy; like a lion and a honey badger. Very interesting." He murmured, more to himself than to you.
You shut your eyes, incredibly anxious for the hat's answer.
"Slytherin!" The hat yelled and the Slytherin table cheered for their new housemate. You smiled, making your way to an open spot at the table, next to a boy your age with platinum blonde hair.
He smiled, "I'm Draco. Draco Malfoy." He said, extending his hand.
You shook it, "I'm Y/N. Nice to meet you, Malfoy."
Draco smirked, "Please, call me Draco."
You smirked back, a small glint in your eyes, "Draco."
~~~
For the next couple of weeks, you became friends with Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, and Pansy. Well, more the boys than her, she didn't seem to like you that much. You had gotten a letter from your parents, relieved that you had gotten into their desired house. You simply tossed the letter away. In a couple of weeks, you started studying at Hogwarts, you didn't really care about the house rivalries. It was rather childish, in your opinion.
You didn't hide your friendships with other students from other houses. Not even when you started talking to Harry Potter. He was quite surprised when you went over to introduce yourself to him and his friends. You had then learned that he was the chosen one. The one your parents had spoken about in hushed whispers most days when you had been home. He had survived the Dark Lords' killing curse with the power of love.
When you talked to him, he was kind to you, even his friend Hermione was too. Ron, he was a bit timid around you, being Slytherin and all. But, he warmed up to you. You had started to enjoy your classes, especially Potions where you had found a friend in Neville Longbottom. Neville was always there for you whenever you needed help. Even in Herbology, which you weren't too good at. And Luna Lovegood, helped you study on multiple occasions, even Hermione would sometimes join.
~~~
Walking up to the trio with purpose and a small smirk on your lips, you stood before them. Harry paused what he was saying to turn to you, giving you a curious once-over before speaking, "Um... Hello."
You brought your hand out, "Hi. I'm Y/N. You must be Harry. A lot of people are talking about you." You added after your introduction as Harry shook your hand.
Harry gave you a sheepish smile, "Yeah, they are. I'm Harry. Harry Potter."
You dropped your hand and clasped them in front of you, "So, who are you? Some famous wizard's child or something?" You asked curiously, and Harry's eyes widened.
"You don't know?" The red-headed boy asked beside Harry, rather shocked.
You frowned slightly, "Know what?" You asked, looking from Harry, to the red-head, to the lone girl.
"Harry's the Chosen One for bloody sake!" The red-head exclaimed and your eyes widened.
"Oh! My parents have spoken about you. Do you really have a scar?" You asked and Harry nodded, brushing up his unruly bangs to show you the lightning bolt scar on his forehead.
"Wow, that's amazing! My parents said something about how you survived the Dark One's curse, that's so admirable!" You compliment the young boy who flushed bright red, the tips of his ears matching his cheeks.
"Thanks..." He mumbled, rubbing the nape of his neck.
"Oh!" You widen your eyes, "I haven't introduced myself to you two. I'm Y/N." You spoke, shaking the redhead's hand and the lone girl's hand, smiling brightly.
You then shook the redhead's hand, "I'm Ron... It's also nice to meet you, I guess." He spoke, slightly anxious.
"I'm Hermione. It's a pleasure to meet you, Y/N." Hermione spoke, taking your offered hand and shaking it.
Hermione nudged him in the side, glaring at him as he raised his hands slightly in offense. "What? She's a Slytherin." He muttered quietly, yet you heard him.
Hermione turned to you with an apologetic smile, "I'm sorry about him. He doesn't think before he speaks." But you shook your head with a knowing smile.
"No, it's alright. If I was in your shoes, I would be hesitant too. But, there is no need to worry. House rivalries are childish and petty. You should focus on your studies, and try not to worry over such things." You spoke kindly, ignoring the red-haired boy who glared at you.
"I'll try," He muttered, and you could tell he meant it… Maybe.
Hermione motioned toward you, "That's what I've been trying to tell him too." She smiled and chuckled softly.
“Awesome! Girl power!” You say, high-fiving her, before looking over and seeing Draco watching you from across the way. "Well, his Royal Highness is beckoning me." You sighed, turning back to the three. "Hopefully, I'll see you all later?" You asked and Harry immediately nodded, a small smile on his face.
"Yeah, for sure." Hermione agreed, and Ron reluctantly once she nudged him in the side again.
You waved goodbye and left with a lightened heart.

How to study physiology: the ultimate guide for medical students
How to study physiology: the ultimate guide for medical students
In my first year, I remember everyone saying that physiology is the hardest subject.
I would drop my jaw, because, hey doesn’t that mean anatomy is easier?
They would tell me, no, other subjects too have their own difficulty levels, but physiology is difficult because there are a lot of concepts involved!
Right.
Concepts.
In first-year MBBS, learning physiology is something a lot of medical…

Hello I’m an incoming first year and I’m going to be moving in/doing orientation without my parents and I was wondering if anyone has any advice! I’m worried that I’m going to be super overwhelmed during orientation. Thanks!!
Here’s some stuff that helped me out when moving to a new area by myself.
1. I’d go on a Smith Facebook group and find a buddy or two that you can chat with and maybe meet up with and hang out with once you get to Smith. I ate at Dawes my first semester and I made sure to talk to some people before going just so that I would see some familiar faces even if we didn’t hang out much so that the area didn’t feel completely foreign to me.
2. Use your meeting people skills and network! Find people in the same house and in the same orientation group to introduce yourself to. Often there are shared living spaces where you can hang out around other people. Smithies are also nice and friendly and there will be people that like you and support you. If you need something, ask around. If someone came up to me and was like “I’m looking for company wanna hang out for a bit?” I’d absolutely keep you company.
3. Practice introducing yourself in the mirror if you’re nervous. You’re going to do it what feels like at least 50 times during orientation week as you’re constantly meeting sooooo many new people.
4. Arrange phone or video calls back home with your favorite people. If you have a best friend, close friend, parent, relative, or volunteer, arrange a time to call/text/message them and just talk to them for an hour or so several times during your week so that you don’t feel so alone and have someone to spill your guts to if you have any difficult emotions that come up. My best friend several hundred miles away video-called me for like two hours during orientation week and it made things so. much. Better.
So yup. I'm officially terrible at blogging and remembering to post regularly. I am about to finish the second to last week of my first semester of my social work degree. Even just comparing my study space from how it looked when I started to how it is now, halfway through my second to last assignment for this semester is such a change. Thinking back on how much I have learnt throughout the last few weeks is absolutely insane. Learning about and being able to debate about the Treaty of Waitangi, learning that social workers are far far more than just people that 'take away babies', learning Te Reo Maori and being able to effectively communicate with diversity and different cultures and learning to academically back up my thoughts. I have been achieving decently throughout my papers, I plan to change some things for next semester. I need to create better study habits and work a bit harder and apply myself a bit more. Of course it is not without conflict. Not only with other classmates but within myself. I catch myself in class, listening to my tutor go on about certain topics, and she is throwing around all these big words. Big words I have learnt and understand but wondering how the hell I got this far and wether it is something I can keep doing. Wondering why I thought I could even do it in the first place... 'if it were easy, everyone would do it' That is my motto for getting through. Next semester we start psychology, sociology, human development and continue with our Te Reo Maori. But for now I just need to focus on my last two assignments and take a well deserved (I think so anyway) holiday and set some need goals.
