And then i got this job
I was a bit surprised when they suddenly contacted me. It had been a while since i sent in that.. compulsory application that somewhat matched some of my more specialized yet sparse skills.
The application process went okay and yea, in the end I'm now an employee. Decent job, decent wage, decent conditions. All said and to so many extends so very average that you know, I just can't help that feeling that it's not going to be that 'center of my life' career job thing. Hence this blog. I'm not going to quit this job anytime soon, but to get up in the morning, I also have to know that this isn't my job until the day i die or retire.
So i guess it comes down to, what should I do with my life otherwise? Spend all my money on consumer stuff and see if i can be happy when i own it all, learn to love a job that does have perspectives for my medium-long term job wishes or get a proper hobby..
Interestingly enough, after i signed my contract, i had the nerve to ask how many applicants i'd won in front of on the finish line, well the answer was that there was only one other who was interesting and he didn't come close in qualifications.
Derps.
I don't actually see myself as specially qualified for a Software Developer role, everywhere i looked for a job, they wanted 5 years of specialized experience and, fresh out of school with my bachelor degree, i was nowhere near that. Obviously there are also self taught 'developers' who maybe put a few blocks together in Scratch once, so maybe that was the competition.
On the other hand I do give myself a hard time. I do know how to program. I can implement, and to some extent, develop advanced algorithms and well, as all other programmers, google. Again not giving me enough credit, I know most basics of computer science from my school years. Given that I got a job and the decent pay I asked for, I must be good enough. My trial period is almost over!
Win! Got my first real job before turning 20! Starting almost immediately after grad! Woop, woop - tell me more about how my plans are impossible?
Into the Wild
Tomorrow I will get up at 6. I will put on clothes. I will make coffee. I will eat breakfast. I will pack my lunch. I will take Nugget for a walk. I will give him a scratch behind the ears before I will head out the front door. I will hop in my car and make a 20 mile drive. I will spend the rest of the day learning the ins-and-outs of what it is to be an engineer at my first real job. And this will be my life. For the foreseeable and not-so-foreseeable future. No more 4-year goals, expiration dates. No more class for 2 hours, break for 3 hours and then class for 2 more hours. No more skipping class (as little as it happened anyways). This is a first step, but unlike all the other first steps I've taken in my life, the end goal isn't a clear cut light at the end of the tunnel. For someone like me-- a regimented goal setter, a serial non-procrastinator, a kill-yourself-until-its-done-because-then-you'll-be-that-much-closer-to-the-end type--this is positively mind boggling. Unfathomable. At first. But then I remember. Oh yeah, this is my life. The start of it. Primed and ready for me to mold it into whatever I want. A chance for me to refine old patterns and carve out new patterns for myself. An opportunity to take all the lessons I've learned during those mini-lives--those 4 year, goal-oriented, pre-portioned slices of my life--and select the optimum course of my life. Of course, even in those mini-lives, I haven't learned all the lessons. And I suppose that will add a bit of spice to the journey. The hiccups. The missteps. The stumble and falls. The getting-ups. The moving-ons. The enjoying the journey instead of tunnel-visioning on the end. Instead of focusing on the routine of it all--the apparent endless monotony--the more important thing to focus on is the potential spontaneity. This is my life. The start of it. Maybe I'll go on a roadtrip. Maybe I'll take up guitar. Maybe I'll learn three new languages. Maybe I'll visit the birthplace of my grandfather. Maybe I'll accomplish things that actually make an impact in this world, as opposed to focusing all energy on that ever-elusive 4.0 . All things that were hardly doable during those 4 year goal, expiration date years (Not to mention the lack of financial means). Tomorrow I will get up at 6. Tomorrow I will get up and smile.

Yesterday was my first day on the floor. I felt like a slow retard without any common sense. I felt like the worst nurse ever.
But today was a much, much better day. God reassured me that I’m not THAT much of a retard haha.
