Summary: Liu Sang was a huli jing, a two tailed fox captured by humans over two decades ago and forced to curse people for them. His next target was a young man named Wu Xie, apparently the heir to a family that had irked his captors.
He didn’t expect the human to be anything but normal. He didn’t expect him to be able to see his ears, his tails, and to have no reaction to his magic at all. And he definitely, absolutely, didn’t expect the human’s mate to be a goddamn qilin.
As far as Liu Sang was concerned, the only good thing about this whole sordid business was that he could order himself increasingly complicated, sweet beverages while he watched his prey. He had no idea what the man at the table at the other end of the cafe had done to piss off the Wangs so much, but it was rare for them to send him after somebody as young as this one.
He slurped his sweetened water, full of strawberries and mango bits, and jabbed his cheesecake with his fork. The magic restraints on him might not be visible to the naked eye, and certainly not to human eyes, but he definitely felt them wrapping painfully around his wrists, ankles, and neck. For all that they looked like just a simple string of red yarn, they were utterly unbreakable for him. They were put on by a human, with human wish and human sacrifice in the magic, and nothing he could do could so much as damage them. He knew; he’d tried and had the scars to prove it.
He sank deeper into his chair and pushed some of his hair - damnably short now with so much of his power drained and locked away, not even reaching his shoulders - out of his face. His bracelets jingled and the three silver rings on his left hand glinted, catching the attention of the waitress again. He felt her gaze and met her eyes, smiling and keeping eye contact until she blushed and looked away.
The man - or boy, it was so fucking hard to treat humans as anything but mean, vicious and spoiled children - seemed especially engrossed in his book, not even noticing the whipped cream topped coffee that was steadily going cold in front of him.
Curse him, they’d said. Make sure bad things happen to him. Make sure he won’t live to see his next tomb.
Apparently, the young man’s name was Wu Xie and he was the heir to the Wu family, a family who were apparently causing issues to the ones who had captured Liu Sang a good two decades ago.
The man had short, dark hair that looked somewhat messy. His body was hard to judge under the layers of clothes, the soft layers of shirt and sweater obscuring most of his upper body. His jeans were tight enough to show off the nice shape of his thighs, the denim wrapping tightly around them as he shifted in his chair. His eyelashes were very long, fanning his cheeks every time he blinked, and his lips looked soft. All in all, he was nice looking, nicer than most people Liu Sang had been sent after.
He himself looked even younger than the young man he was watching, barely twenty five to a human’s eye, although he was significantly older than that. He’d usually found it incredibly convenient to look like a young adult human, since they tended to prefer the younger, more attractive looking members of their species, after all. But after twenty years of being stuck in this particular form, he was getting more than a little bored with it. What he wouldn’t give to be able to take on his natural form and stretch his legs for a bit, or even a different human form, but no, he was stuck like this for as long as he remained bound by those damned humans who’d managed to catch him in a moment of inattention.
He stabbed another piece of cheesecake and ate it, fully aware of the attention he was receiving from both the customers and staff of the cafe as he let his tongue lick over the fork. Attention he was receiving from everyone except the person he was actually trying to get it from. This Wu Xie remained frustratingly oblivious, not even glancing up from his book once. Liu Sang was almost ready to think that it was deliberate, that this young man somehow knew that he’d been sent after him and was deliberately ignoring him. That thought made him narrow his eyes and stab the next bit of cheesecake so hard that his fork went right through it and clattered against the plate.
