Physical distancing, pre-covid-times

The Angkor Park is a significant cultural heritage covering a large large area of over 420 km2. Basic human historic and cultural activity like small scale farming and grazing still goes on inside the park.

The animals plays an important role in keeping the jungle and vegetation at bay and the buildings accessible. They are also great photo props.

UNesco, in the early days of preserving World Cultural Heritage, had this crazy idea that if a site was to be designated World Cultural Heritage-status, all normal human activity had to cease. Basically, removing the culture from the cultural site. They did reconsider and changed this policy in the 1980s.

Return of the wildlife

The downside of to much farming and grazing combined with tourists activity is that the natural wildlife get forced out. But that is about to change. One of the more interesting effect of the pandemic is that the expulsion has been reversed, according to newer reports.

That will give the Angkor experience more authenticity for visitors to come. Another part of the trend to get a more animal friendly, more authentic experience happened even before the pandemic. I 2019, the elephants offered to visitors for riding in narrow enclosures inside the park, was moved to a wildlife park. It is still open for visitors, but now the theme is to experience the Asian elephant natural life in an open wildlife park.
