I will make you Fishers of Men Said Fish to Fishes
For Fish is Fisher Of Man who Fishes
And if Man is Fisher of Fish And Fisher of Men
And Fish is Fisher of Man And Fisher of Fish
And then that Man is Manna of Man Then we'll get there if we can
Wanted to show off my favorite part of my CD collection and my most prized possession
friday media review: fish rising by steve hillage and remnants of the gong band: five out of five loaves and fishes
i'm going to start doing non-book reviews every friday! here is our first.
after the underrated but top-level psychedelic band gong broke up, the remnants of the band -- almost the whole line-up, minus lyricist and singer daevid allen -- joined steve hillage, the band's guitarist, for his debut solo album. it's the gong band members at peak, on par with their 1974 masterpiece "you". hillage composed a landmark album in progressive rock and conveyed a genuine spiritual message with his songs.
the guitar is uplifting and joyful, and the backup band is as rich as a symphony. waves of sunshine roll out of your speakers and glissando riffs bathe you with rainbows. it's an amazingly positive experience. there are playful little tracks and soaring suites, plus the rejoicing riff-filled blast "the salmon song". the backing band include playful reeds from didier malherbe and synth from hawkwind alum tim blake.
this album is on par with the best psychedelic and progressive rock albums of the seventies. although it's hard for me to compare it to other albums because it's so qualitatively different with its sunshine glissandos and rainbow riffs, you can put it on the same shelf as gong's "you," king crimson's "larks' tongues in aspic," magma's "mekanik destruktiw kommandoh," and pink floyd's "dark side of the moon". get yourself this album.
