Hans sat nervously on Lupa’s bathroom counter. Everything in her apartment was scaled up to her size, so huge for him. Lupa was laying out all the needed supplies next to him as he took in his surroundings with awe. She might have been kind and gentle but there was still part of him that was nervous with her size as she towered above him.
“I’m going to need you to take off your shirt if that’s cool.” She said as she dabbed a cotton ball in alcohol. Hans complied. “Ok either I can cut the gauze off or your can try to untangle it. Up to you though.”
Hans pushed the fear back into his head as he looked up. “You can ah… cut it if that’s ok.” Lupa nodded and handed Hans the cotton ball as she closed her paw to brandish her claws. Hans froze at the sight of them. His heartbeat raced as he frantically started to back away. Memories of that night replayed over and over in his mind. Claws similar to the ones before him tearing into his skin flooded his thoughts.
Lupa pulled her paw away and raised both in surrender as she took a couple steps back. “Hey now. Take it easy Hans. I’m not here to hurt you. I swear. I can see claws are a sensitive matter which makes sense.” she said, “Wait here a sec. I’ll go grab the scissors.” In a flash she was gone.
Hans watched her leave the room. His heart was still beating furiously. When she returned, she still had her paws in the air so he could see them as well as the scissors. “I’ll ask you this again because the situation kinda changed. Do you want me to still cut your bandage, or do you want to cut your own?” Lupa asked still hovering in the doorway.
Hans could see that Lupa was trying to make him feel as comfortable as possible. Taking a deep breath do steal his nerves he said, “Y-you can still c-cut them p-please…”
Lupa nodded as she slowly approached. Her large paw pulled the gauze away slightly so that she could slip in the scissors. Hans still was getting used to having paws almost the size of him so close. Lupa was extremely careful as she cut away the bandage. Hans involuntarily shivered as the cold metal pressed against his body. Every part of him wanted to bolt, but he had to keep reminding himself that he could trust Lupa. After a couple of snips she was done.
“Do you want to pull it away yourself? I don’t want to yank on it too hard and break open your wound even more.” Lupa said taking the cotton ball that Hans forgot he still had.
Hans nodded and gingerly removed the gauze. He could hear Lupa’s teeth grind as his wound became visible. Hans looked up to find Lupa’s eyes ice cold upon his body. Fear shot through him as he slowly backed away from her. He didn’t know why she was angry, but he knew he didn’t want to be anywhere close when she unleashed her furry.
Lupa caught on to his uneasiness and calmed herself. “Sorry Hans… Didn’t mean to make you nervous… It’s just… well…” she said rubbing her neck and looking away, “I know where you go those cuts from… and well…. I know why my claws made you nervous earlier now… solidifies even more how I want to bash their skulls in…”
Hans tried to slow his breath. He didn’t say anything. He just laid there waiting for Lupa. He knew that most of her was still the Lupa he knew and loved as a child, but there was also a part of her that was different. A more powerful side capable of things he didn’t want to think about… That part terrified him.
Lupa lightly dabbed the cotton ball on his chest. Hans winced but made sure to stay still. Lupa then put ointment on a Q-tip and rubbed it on to help with the healing process before grabbing near by gauze. “Can you lift up your arms for me? I’m just going to wrap this all the way around you if that’s cool.” she asked.
Hans did as instructed. “Um… Yeah sure.” he said. Lupa then leaned in closer to get a better look.
“Tell me if this is too tight ok?” Lupa said as she started to wrap the cloth around his midsection.
Lupa was gentle. Her hands working with precision as the gauze slowly worked its way down his small frame. She secured it to his body before raising her gaze to meet his soft brown eyes. “How’s that feel?” she asked with a soft smile. Her heart fluttered a little with the closeness.
Hans moved back and forth to test out the patch job. “Good! Thank you!” he said giving her a thumbs up.
“Anytime!” Lupa said as she rose to her full height and started to clean up the supplies. “We should probably get to bed. We both have had a very long day.”
“You can say that again…” Hans said. His body felt like lead as he sat on the counter.
“May I pick you up?” Lupa asked as she closed the cabinet door.
“I would very much appreciate if you did.” Hans said with drooping eyelids.
As Lupa picked him up she couldn’t shake how cute he looked. She laid him on the pillow on the other side of the bed. Without a second thought Hans curled up and fell immediately asleep. Lupa was going to ask him if he wanted to change for bed but seeing as he didn’t have a bag with him those were probably his only clothes. Lupa also couldn’t bring herself to wake the sleeping man. He had been through a lot and needed some sleep.
Lupa changed and crawled in bed next to him. As much as she willed, sleep did not come. Lupa let out a soft sigh as she turned to study the little squirrel on the pillow next to her. He had the covers wrapped high and tight over his shoulders. He was curled into a fetal position. The relaxation and contentment on his face made Lupa smile.
Hans had changed just like she had over the years. His face made him look older. There was stubble starting to grow and worry lines that were never there before. Hans’s hair was shorter that it use to be with the back and sides cut closer to his head. His chiseled jaw and toned body from manual labor made him more than pleasing to the eye. Lupa watched his tiny chest rise and fall rhythmically. She could watch him all night she thought as her eye lids start to grow heavy and close.
