AO-27 Flachette Rifle,
A weird and unique rifle to come out of the Soviet Union inf the 1960's, the AO-27 is a flachette rifle. In other words it does not fire standard cartridges with bullets, instead it fires 7.63 Sabot cartridges with 3mm dart like flachettes. It used a gas piston design and could be fired in both semi and fully automatic. It was fed from a 30 round detachable magazine. The advantages of a flachette is that is had stabilization fins which gave it much better accuracy and range. However, this was at the cost of penetration and stopping power. Due to this and considerable costs, the AO-27 project was scrapped.
