Here’s What’s Happening in Tucson This Weekend.

Fri 10/26 - Sun 10/28

Happy Friday everyone and Happy Halloween too!  Bring the kids to Kartchner Caverns tonight for a scary adventure featuring bats!  Not to be outdone, Colossal Cave offers both a slight scare and an extreme scare tonight as well. No matter how scared the kids are, they’ll recover in time for Trick or Treating next week.  And for the adults, there’s always Nightmare on Congress Street! No Freddie-the-axe killer, but there may be a Freddie playing his axe loudly as six different bands take the stages over the course of this two-night party.

Hey Wildcats!  It’s Homecoming Week!  That means Reunions, Luncheons, Awards, Parades, Pep Rallies, Wilber and Wilma, Tailgates, Football, Bonfires, and burning down A Mountain!  See the full schedule for all events.  Party hearty but be safe!  And of course, root for the Wildcats to surprise the Oregon Ducks tomorrow night at Arizona Stadium.

You may have read her newspaper columns or a few of her 13 published books. You may have watched her on Good Morning America.  If so, there had to be a few memorable lines or stories that you remember to this day.  Tickets are on sale for the opening performance tonight of Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End.  As she has said, ‘When humor goes, there goes civilization’.

This Sunday take the kids and the dogs to Spooky Kids Halloween and Wag-O-Ween down on 4th Ave.  And perhaps the scariest of all, The Mount Lemmon Gravel Grinder is tomorrow!  From kids short courses to 60 mile grinds, get your ride on but be careful!  Also on Sunday head to Flandrau Planetarium for The Frightlights Halloween Laser Show.

The Tucson Symphony Pops Orchestra presents Lights! Camera! Pops! this Sunday night at Tucson Music Hall.  Concert organist Woosug Kang performs Past, Present and Future Organ Masterpieces during the 23rd Music Season of Concerts at St. Phillips.  If you were lucky enough to order tickets awhile ago then enjoy the Joan Baez Fare The Well concert this Sunday at the Fox.

Here’s What’s Happening in Tucson This Weekend.

Happy Friday Everyone! Hang in there Tucson, there’s only 64 more days until Fall!  But you will have to leave your pool for something before that I presume.  If you’re brave enough to venture out tonight you’ll be happy to know that they play hot jazz, but their name is ‘The Coolers’.  Sounds refreshing already.  Tonight at Main Gate Square see The Coolers in the Live Friday Summer Concert series at Geronimo Square.  If a jazz trio in the garden in the cooler and later hours sounds appealing, check out Cynthia Hilts Trio at Maynards tonight at 8:30. 

Get out of town tomorrow or Sunday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the movie Tombstone, at the Tombstone 25th Reunion and Freedom Days Festival.  Catch the Buffalo Soldiers Parade and even participate in the costume contest right outside of Big Nose Kate’s Saloon! If you’re a big science fiction fan instead of westerns you can rent the movie Armageddon and watch Bruce Willis and crew save the world. Or live in the real world and visit the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium to celebrate Asteroid Day tomorrow!  Learn more about how the UofA-led NASA team will bring back samples from a 4 billion year old asteroid!  

Of course the usual suspects are available this weekend such as Summer Safari Friday Nights at the Zoo, Cool Summer Nights at The Desert Museum, and as a special bonus, tomorrow is Mud Day at the Zoo!  Plan on cleaning your car after that visit!

They don’t make anything like they used to right?  Well if you’re stuck in the 60’s and 70’s for your musical preferences catch the Brit Floyd World Tour tomorrow night at The Fox Theatre and rock on!  Or dig some good vibrations at Surfapalooza down at Club Congress tomorrow night.  Who needs a beach!

Paleo Outreach Opportunity!

Flandrau Science Center does a Fusion Summer Camp for K-6 students and are looking for people to come in and talk about paleontology/marine paleoecology to the students this summer.

They are looking for:

a) paleontology talks the weeks of June 06-10 and July 18-22, and

b) marine paleoecology talks the weeks of July 05-08, 11-15, and 25-29.

Critical Zone Discovery

Informal Science Education program for grades 2 thru 6

Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium, University of Arizona

CZ Discovery Program Description:

The Critical Zone Discovery (CZD) program will engage students from 2nd through 6th grades with the wonders of Critical Zone science through a series of hands-on activities.  Field trip groups from regional schools arrive at Flandrau Science Center, then separate several smaller groups of students that rotate around 5 different activity stations over a two hour period to learn about earth science in the Critical Zone.

Job Title:

Instructional Specialist, CZD

Job Description:

Undergraduate students who work as Instructional Specialists for CZD will teach elementary school students about Critical Zone science and dynamic earth systems using hands-on educational activities that convey basic earth science processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

A basic knowledge of earth science and enthusiasm for engaging kids with science. Specialists will be trained to deliver the education activities and connect with youth.

Details:

Paid training starts Spring 2016, two sessions of two hours.  Training and Discovery program start Fall 2016. Students will work 3 hours, twice a week, in the morning.  $10/hr pay.

Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium: Tucson, AZ

Located at our Alma Mater, like most things here, the planetarium was amazing. Although it was smaller than we remember it, they were doing a geological study and most of the exhibits focused on that. We hear certain nights they do laser shows, where you can use the telescope and what-not. Most of the pictures are from the exhibits that we thought were the coolest, like us.
