The Flash: Girls Night Out: Reaction (Spoilers)

Guys go out to play, ladies slay.

While the difference between male and female characters has always been apparent in many, if not all forms of media, this episode really makes that gap apparent. Without guest Felicity, the Team Flash ladies would’ve had a rougher go of the night. It’s a good thing one of them has powers, even if Caitlin’s powers are more often a potential liability over an asset but she was instrumental in stopping Amunet and getting the Weeper Free.

Speaking of the Weeper, what kind of power is drug tears? It’s not even something you can use to defend yourself and pretty much every other power we’ve seen had combat potential. Even Thinker’s super intelligence can be used for strategy in combat. The worst part is, the guy was taken by Thinker and he’s been through enough pain as is.

When Caitlin and Iris were discussing their friendship, Caitlin made a good point that they’re not really friends though really, is it that hard to make mostly female moments on the show? I’m pretty sure a good percentage of Arrowverse watchers are women so more primarily women scenes would be nice but considering we only have two regular female characters, that’s hard to do. Well, at least we got a girl power episode. More please!

I felt a little bad for Ralph not being included in the initial bachelor party. If they want the guy to get along well with the team, that includes inviting him to Team Flash stuff, even if it’s not superhero stuff. Plus I had to agree that spending a night watching home movies didn’t seem like the best way to spend a bachelor party. You can watch home movies any time but a night out is something special. Of course, going to a strip club is less special, more when Joe finds Joanie working as a dancer. Also, Cisco, never let Barry get drunk again! While I enjoy a good drink from time to time, I don’t like the idea of drinking for the buzz rather than enjoying the drink’s taste and flavor and Cisco only gave Barry that little cocktail for the buzz over the taste. I have to wonder where Harry got the money to bail the guys out. Presumably he has no Earth 1 funds unless he has a secret cash stash or had to dip into the STAR Labs museum funds.

Again with the “This house is bitchin” line. We hear it once and it never goes away. Much like “Run, Barry, run.”

Best part: both sides just lie about their respective nights. Yeah, if we’re hiding big things already then that just proves how open and honest this team is.

Next Time: Ralph gets to suit up! Wait, Cisco that’s is not your finest work. Was there any effort put into it?

The Flash: Finish Line: Reaction (Spoilers)

Finish? No, we’re only starting.

HR Well, may you never be forgotten. Cisco mentioned having a special connection with this wells. I believe it’s because HR was unabashedly himself with almost no ulterior motive to betray Team Flash or to work to sacrifice one of them. The only instance of this was when he revealed not being a genius but he refused to let that hold them back. Inspiring the team, getting STAR Labs income as a museum, convincing Tracy Brand to work with them, and now offering himself in Iris’ place as a sacrifice. As of now, he will be my favorite Wells.

With Wells’ passing, it’s not certain if Tracy will stay with the team. Barry’s decision to help Savitar find a way to stay alive may influence her wanting to stay around them, namely considering against it, but Barry having to leave may mean that decision is delayed for a while.

I have to give props for Barry wanting to help Savitar. Showing compassion to enemies, even if they refuse it, says a lot about a person. It shows they choose to forgive the enemy for what they have done, whatever the outcome.

I had a feeling Caitlin would be essential in taking down Savitar, specifically stopping him from hurting Barry. I did not expect her being able to take down Black Flash. She killed what amounts to a Death Incarnation. It’s unknown if Black Flash can restore itself but with that power, it’s possible other speedsters or time travelers may have reason to fear her. I am glad her Killer Frost persona is no longer dominant. If she needs time to consider who she is now, then I’m all for it. Would it be great if she could keep her powers and stay Caitlin, yes but after everything she had gone through as Killer Frost and nearly killing her friends, maybe not having her powers may be better for all.

After everything the team has been through with Savitar, it’s only fitting that Iris was the one to take him down. This all started with his murder of her, and now she is the one taking back that power. Double awesome since it was also to save Barry.

The Speed Force has lost any sort of respect I may have had for it. That storm was it throwing a tantrum that it didn’t have a prisoner to play with. When the Speed Force-Nora showed up, that would’ve been a perfect time for anyone to ask why it still needed someone within. You’d think since it didn’t have to hold Savitar that’d be a win for all but I guess the Speed Force has attachment issues. Barry says entering the Speed Force was penance for creating Flashpoint, but hasn’t this whole season been just that? Knowing his actions were related to Cisco’s brother’s death, Caitlin becoming Killer Frost, Iris almost dying, HR actually dying, Wally being trapped, Jay Garrick taking his place, having to take the ire of Team Arrow and the Legends for what he did, getting the attention of the Dominators, and for all that the Speed Force still needs him, when it was revealed it could’ve stopped him from creating Flashpoint in the first place. I think at this point, it cannot be considered a benevolent force. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the next season, the Speed Force was the Big Bad.

The Speed Force said it was time for Barry to stop. I believe we all say “No.” He can stop when there is no need for a Flash, of any kind. Until then, all Flashes and speedsters need to fight the good fight and their allies can’t rest knowing they’re unaccounted for.

The Flash: The Once and Future Flash: Reaction (Spoilers)

Sometimes the future isn’t so progressive.

The biggest thing about this episode that stayed with me was how future Barry pretty much shut down after Iris’ death. Though he did stop Savitar he was pretty broken. A lot of the time, I fear that this is what love can do to someone. I’ve heard of the phrase “It’s better to have loved and lost...” but I’m pretty sure Alfred Lord Tennyson didn’t imply for one to basically give up on happiness because of loss. To become so attached to someone that when they’re gone it practically breaks you seems like an insult to the one that is lost. I want to have a love that reminds me of the good in life even when things seem at their worst. I want a love that makes me stronger that I can choose to live in honor of one’s memory. I want to be able to live as one that can share that beautiful love so it does not go away with death. For Barry though, I have to say that will never be easy since he has loved Iris all his life. Iris is someone that has been there for as long as he can remember so the grief is understandable. What I don’t agree with is his mindset that losing Iris meant losing everything to where abandoned his friends. I don’t want to be like that. In loss, that is when coming together matters most and as painful as it can be to think about the fact that my loved ones will die, I still have to acknowledge it. I fear if I cannot, then when the day does happen, I won’t be able to think about what to do next.

So Savitar has finally revealed himself to someone, and it’s offscreen. It’d have to be someone Caitlin/Killer Frost absolutely trusted and there aren’t many of those people. I want to lean towards Ronnie Raymond and there are others who are believing this. My reasons are as follows: we never saw Ronnie’s body after he split off from Stein when dealing with the wormhole at the end of season 1 and beginning of season 2, I can’t imagine Caitlin absolutely trusting anyone else, and Ronnie disappearing into the wormhole could’ve done something to his mind to where he blames Flash for his current state since all the villains love to hate Flash for rather irrational reasons.

While future Central City was a downer for most of the remaining Team Flash members, I was happy to see that HR had done very well for himself. Owner of HR Jitters and very popular superhero romance novelist. Not just that, but he still remained a rather positive person looking on the bright side of life. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, the team needs his optimistic spirit just as much as they need the skills and smarts of everyone else.

Okay, how hard is it for Flash to not move when he sees Rosalind Price/Top begin to use her powers? He should know by now to take her down as soon as he sees her but always with the letting the baddies wait to fight rather than a preemptive strike. I get the whole “I’ll give you a chance to come quietly” thing but once they refuse he should not just be standing there. This is not a turn-based game! Flash, if they’re doing the crime, you can proceed with the speed!

The Flash: I Know Who You Are: Reaction (Spoilers)

Anyone can be considered a threat under the right circumstances.

Flash’s enemy is himself. Putting aside the philosophical and psychological jargon, this is really twisted. Really, the whole “I am the future Flash” should’ve been a big sign though you don’t expect the hero to be the villain. Not to mention, how? It’s possible the time remnant future Barry may be a key but is this one of those causal paradox things? Savitar kills Iris, Barry seals Savitar, Barry becomes Savitar, Savitar has to do all this stuff to continue his existence. Man, time travel is more annoying than it needs to be. I’m sticking with magic. At least that has definable rules.

I have to wonder what Savitar-Barry means to Caitlin that she is so willing to follow him without question? Maybe because at that point they have embraced their evil sides? I also have to wonder if Savitar wants Caitlin near him because she is able to hurt him with her powers. Though Tracy Brand’s Speed Force cage will be the very thing to defeat him, maybe Caitlin’s ice powers will come into play against him.

The baddies always seem to have the most stylish outfits, though I guess unlike Flash, they don’t have to worry about their powers messing with their clothes as much. I know the partial skirt was also on Black Siren’s outfit but there is something about it that I find really cool.

Welcome to the team Ms. Tracy Brand. It’s odd being recruited for future reasons but one has to get their start somewhere, especially if it’s at a lab that doesn’t require grants and funding that requires no research proposals! Well, the research has technically been validated but there’s still the experimental phase. Either way, yay for more science women though less yay for said science women not being able to work together.

When Joe broke up with Cecile to “protect her” my first thought was “Really, Joe?” After all the times he’s been left out of the loop what with Barry first being Flash and the most recent example being Iris’ impending death, you’d think he’d know better. I know it’s different being the one giving the silence rather than being the one whom it’s directed at but you’d think his past experiences would have him remember that being in the dark does not equate to protection. Knowledge is power. Cecile knows now though and Team Flash can always use more allies.

When Cisco mentioned not wanting to use his power to hurt Caitlin, that made me question how much control he really has over his powers. We’ve seen Barry and Wally train but we never see or hear of Cisco training aside from when he was about to fight Gypsy. While learning how to use one’s powers to their full extent is important, learning control and power output seems just as essential to me.

Next Time: An attempt to weaken Savitar leads to memory loss for Barry.

The Flash: Abra Cadabra: Reaction (Spoilers)

Behind every deception lies a truth, some fun, some sinister.

So the answer for Savitar’s identity, and possibly weakness, lie in the future. It’s starting to seem like whenever things are too crazy, the answer is time travel. While traveling to the future has less consequences on history for “present” Barry, based on the trailer he may learn some rather painful truths. Not to mention knowing the future can mean either learning that things are either supposed to happen that may be unfavorable to him or certain things won’t happen despite his efforts.

After seeing Caitlin begin to heal, I believe at that point, Julian should’ve made the necklace resume physical contact with her. I’m not sure if that would’ve negated the healing at that point but it seems to me the second she started getting better, that would’ve been the best time to suppress her Frost powers and let the healing process take its course. Speaking of Caitlin, after seeing her supervise her own surgery, I will never consider her anything but strong. I have to wonder if her being a meta, even one that’s suppressed, affected her being able to stay conscious as long as she did for the procedure.

Cisco and team believe that tech makes magic look possible. They may want to have a conversation with Oliver Queen and Team Arrow about magic’s existence. They may try to science it as much as possible but I’d like to see them try to scientifically examine Oliver’s tattoo that protected him from Darhk’s magic in the previous Arrow season. I’d also like to see them try to “science” either Vixen’s totem necklace. Let’s not forget how much of a headache they’d get if they were to meet John Constantine.

Speaking of Cisco, I’m liking that we’re seeing him more in a combat role. While I do believe his primary role is tech, it’s still good that he’s using his powers and more able to defend himself. Of course, wanting to impress Gypsy is a good motivator. I do have to question the whole “Where does this leave us?” question at the end before Gypsy left. There is attraction but nothing has really been shown beyond that to really categorize their relationship. At this point, it’s been more like a fling and not even a well developed one.

The Flash: Untouchable: Reaction (Spoilers)

How does one stop that which they fear to interact with?

While having Wally null Clive Yorkin’s decay power with his blood was pretty cool, one has to question if the Flash lightning technique would’ve been useful in taking Yorkin down. It wasn’t shown if Yorkin’s power affected non-solids. I get this was supposed to be more of a Wally-centric episode and I’m cool with that but I’d like to see the team exhaust or logically throw out certain ideas, like maybe using lightning would’ve been overkill over just ignoring.

If Joe and Cecile get married, then Joanie will be Kid Flash’s stepsister even if she doesn’t know it. Either way she’d be closer to him!

Thanks to Julian, Caitlin is becoming less afraid of using her powers which is good but I’m sure the Killer Frost side effect is worth her trying to get rid of them even though they’ve been used several times to save the other members of Team Flash. Julian may be stubborn, prickly, and cold at times, but he and Caitlin do share that Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde quality in their pasts so it’s something to support each other through. There does seem to be evidence of a budding friendship between them. If they get romantically involved then I’ll be afraid for Julian since Caitlin’s other romances didn’t end well.

Next Time: Going up against Grodd. Let’s hope the team has better anti-telepathy tech because without Iris coming along to inspire him, Barry’s chances against Grodd go way down.

The Flash: Don’t Run: Reaction (Spoilers)

Sometimes staying where you are is the wisest course of action.

So many wedding gifts. It was nice of Mick Rory to give the newlyweds several toasters, even if he did presumably rob a place but it’s the thought that counts. Has no one in the Arrowverse ever heard of gift cards? Also, was that a tone of bitterness Iris had when she mentioned Oliver and Felicity piggybacking on their wedding and not getting a gift for it? Or at least not a good one?

When Ralph mentioned hanging with friends while Cisco and Harry were decorating STAR Labs, I can’t say I really see him and Team Flash as friends. Not that I don’t want them to be friends, but where was his wedding invite? Can we at least get an explanation why he wasn’t present during the wedding? Also, I do agree it was a bit insensitive that he was saying hanging with Killer Frost was more interesting than being with Caitlin but it’s not as though Cisco and Harry were totally blameless to me. It seems neither of them told Caitlin they hung out with KF and it can’t be good for her when KF is dominant and out partying taking away time that she’s supposed to rest.

It’s weird to see one of Team Flash get a pep talk from the enemy of all places but I did like what Amunet had to say to Caitlin. Yeah, Caitlin as Killer Frost is awesome but I don’t want to ever have who Caitlin is as a person downplayed just because her alternate side is less malevolent. Strong willed, a great doctor, and resourceful like when she knocked out Amunet and her cronies with an aerial anesthetic.

When Iris had to choose between finding Barry or Caitlin, I was hoping she’d opt for Caitlin. Logically, Barry has more combat experience, better used to stressful situations, and is still happy from the recent wedding. Caitlin was more vulnerable and wasn’t able to defend herself with her powers. I understand it was a hard decision, especially since being married means the assumption that your spouse comes before everyone else. At the same time, I believe it also means believing in your spouse if you know they can handle themselves.

When DeVoe/Thinker told Barry he need to lose from time to time to be humbled, that just shows he’s not as smart as he thinks. Barry has suffered loss. Nora, Henry, Eddie, Ronnie, HR, and that’s just the friends and family from the Flash. The full list can be heard when they had their therapy session. As we’re learning, DeVoe does have weaknesses. He may be good at thinking ahead but he was unable to plan on Barry vibrating to be become invisible. This has me thinking that all of DeVoe’s planning is under the assumption Barry takes action. If Barry goes with inaction or acting in a way that doesn’t have him change his current physical position, DeVoe seems to have a blind spot. 

Out of all the baddies Barry has had to go against, DeVoe’s top of my dislike list. As if making Barry seem crazy and obsessed wasn’t enough, he mindjacks Dominic Lance who would’ve finally been a telepath on the hero side, and gets Barry framed for murder. Yes, I know he’s the only baddie that hasn’t murdered any of Barry’s friends but there is something about all this planning and putting Barry in a situation where he’s in a corner and presumably going to make it very difficult to get help from his friends that just really gets to me. For all this, I wonder if DeVoe’s wife can be used against him? I have to wonder if she’s really comfortable being physical with a body that’s not really her husband. Plus there’s always the question of whether or not she’d be willing to be sacrificed for DeVoe’s Enlightenment plan. It’s a low blow to question if she is second to her husband’s plan but low blows are all we’ve got now.
