Headcannon about vampires:

Vampires, due to essentially being immortal, have low rates of normal reproduction. That's a problem with the many risks that come on being a vampire. What's the solution? Turning a human into a vampire, it has a chance to happen even if they want to or not

Like a hen that lays eggs ,they usually lay them all year round they don't care about them usually until they become broody tho this only happens to hens not the rooster

But hear me out, what if... high ranking vampires go through the same thing? A state of Broodyness that is only satisfied if they take in a fledgling or turn a human into a fledgling during this time they become grumpy wandering around they may be looking for a snack or making sure no other high ranking vampire has entered around their turf they encounter a fledgling usually he kills em but for some reason this time he didn't he felt pity? Months later, suddenly, they find themselves taking care of many fledgelings or just the one theybe become attached to them like family, or romantically what's funny? True fledglings tend to have been teens, young adults, and adults they still haven't gone through how harsh time can be, so they still are human imagining being parented as an adult essentially tho it's also like a mentor ship depending how strong usually the urge the vampire is to take in a fledgling taking in account that levels on how good a broody hen is is a thing

Spring. At the moment my garden is full of the desperate bleating sounds of multiple, newly fledged baby birds begging for food from their parents. I love that my garden is seen as a bird friendly habitat but OMG the constant dawn til dusk noise!!!

As I climbed my driveway and drove toward the garage stall with the door opening, a fledgling (I suspect) robin hopped out of the roses and stood in the middle of the doorway, blocking me. I stopped and waited, but that backfired as the bird hopped into the garage and then flew up and into the other half of the garage to the right.

I drove in and got out to spot the bird. There it was! I tried to get behind the bird to encourage it to fly out, but instead it flew to the center chain and rail of the second garage door and frantically tried to squeeze itself over it (not enough room). Well, that ruled out opening that door for an easy escape. 

Shooed it away from there but instead of flying out the open door, it flew to the little window to the back yard and tried to force its way through that. Sigh. A few more shoos and a few more detours (including behind some shelving and on the top rack of my Nissan where I was almost able to grab it) and it finally flew down to the bottom of the open doorway where it all started. 

A little more encouragement and it hopped back into the roses and out of sight and now my fast food tacos are cold but it was worth the mini-adventure.

Fledgling dove! Saw the mama sitting in the middle of the road with it, so stopped to check on them. Baby was fine (no visible wounds, wings flapped easily, clear eyes, nice and plump, gripped with both feet) so I moved it out of the road and under a bush. Heard it calling for mom as I left, she’ll be back soon.

Annual reminder that any birds you find like this, I.e. feathered and on the ground with a parent nearby, is a fledgling. The process is dangerous, but they’re learning how to be birds. Doves look especially helpless during fledging, but they need to be left alone. If a bird isn’t in immediate danger (near a predator, in a road or other dangerous area, injured, badly underweight, or in any sort of contact with a cat) the best thing you can do is not touch it. I took the opportunity for a cute photo, but only while in the process of moving this bird about 10 feet to get it out of the road.

A naked, helpless baby bird should be put back in the nest, or kept indoors very temporarily until a new nest (any sort of basket, including plastic strawberry ones, lined with grass or shredded paper) can be made and put in a tree near where it was found. Easter baskets are good as they have handles.The parents should find it easily enough. 

An emaciated, unresponsive, injured, or cloudy-eyed bird, or any bird that a cat may have scratched, bitten, licked, or mouthed at all should be taken to a wildlife rehabilitator for treatment. Signs of injury include bleeding (beyond minor cuts), legs or wings that don’t work, and large, visible bruises along the featherless underside. Not having feathers under the wings is absolutely normal on fledgelings, as is looking scruffy and being unable to fly. 

And, again, if a cat has scratched a bird, even just slightly, or touched the bird with its mouth at all, or if you think it may have mouthed the bird, the bird needs to be taken to a wildlife rehabilitator for antibiotic treatment or it has a high chance of dying of sepsis. Cats have gram-negative bacteria on their saliva that is meant to kill prey animals like birds, and baby birds in particular have extremely thin skin. The bacteria can be dangerous even through intact skin.

Little Owl Fledglings by Phil Winter Via Flickr: The Golden Hour. Taken as the sun was about to disappear below the horizon. I don't know how much longer they will be around but they have been great fun this year.
