idc if anyone reads this i need to talk about miracle worker.
this relies HEAVILY on my barnes sisters headcanon (Karen Chasity and Becky Barnes being sisters), and on several characters knowing each other in high school.
Karen Barnes was the party girl, popular and cool. She, her sister Becky, Becky’s boyfriend Tom Houston, and their friends Charlotte Fleming (Fleming sisters is real and true in my heart) and Duke Keane all were a friendgroup.
Duke had a HUGE crush on Karen, but at the time was too shy and awkward to do anything. He was nerdy, scrawny, and shy. Karen secretly had feelings for him, but felt like she had to maintain the status quo. By the time she finally had broken down her pride and was trying to muster up the courage to say something, Duke (a year older than her), had graduated and moved out of state for college.
She tried to move on, and ended up dating and getting married to Mark Chasity, who’d had a crush on her since high school.
She settled down, converted, and had a beautiful baby girl when she was only 19 (much younger than she had ever expected).
In the meantime, Duke had come back, and ended up enamored with the mysterious Miss Retro. But even then, he still found himself thinking back to his first love, and kicked himself for not asking her out. He wasn’t the shy, awkward kid he once was.
It so happened that Duke had stayed late for some counseling appointments with some kids at Hatchetfield High, just bumped into a face he hadn’t seen in years.
Karen had just attended a PTA meeting, and bumped into Duke.
He was taller, and not quite as scrawny as be once was. But the way he lit up when he saw her was the same.
Old sparks never really die out, do they?

No matter who I talk to, I can’t get that stupid video taken down. So my daughter is in turmoil. And I am powerless to help her.

you ever have a headcanon that has so woven itself into your brain chemistry that you forget it isn’f actually canon?
cuz yeah
do you have any holy saint thoughts... for some reason im having thoughts about them
ive seen some people talk about karen x jeri so that just made me think of more karen yuri
A few,,,
{rn I'm liking the sound of lesbian Karen and bisexual Charlotte who does actually like Ted, but I also like lesbian Charlotte who falls into comphet with Ted to convince herself she can be happy after Karen, and I ALSO like bisexual Karen who actually likes Mark but can never shake how alive Charlotte made her feel}
I have three ideas for Holy Saint structure: Either they dated in secret, but broke up when Karen's parents found out, which sent Karen deep deep into the closet and dating Mark, or they dated in secret but broke up from going in different paths, only to reconnect years later both with husbands, OR they were repressed from the beginning and never once let themselves consider that the other liked them back. In all of these ideas, Karen was outgoing and partying while Charlotte was closed off and quiet. In all of these, meeting Mark was the catalyst for Karen losing that lively side of her, not for any fault of his own but from the safety and therefore pain she found in Christianity from him.
While writing this I am DEEPLY channeling the knowledge that there are infinite (?) timelines in Hatchetfield post-Hannah. So in my mind there is a world where Karen and Charlotte reconnect through Ruth and Grace (yippee fleming sisters !!). Grace thinks her mum just wants to make sure the house is a good christian house, and that's why she stays for coffee every time Grace studies at Ruth's place - Ruth has different ideas. The age gap between Ruth and Charlotte and therefore Karen is 18 years, so saying the two went separate ways when they were 25, Ruth would have memories of her sister's ex best friend, and suffice to say she would draw her own conclusions.
So anyway, they reconnect, and get close again. That's fine, they're both married, there's no way anything would happen, besides she doesn't see her the same way anymore, she never even did! In a perfect universe, Karen eventually accepts the resurgence of feelings for Charlotte and tries to instead fix her relationship with Christianity. Instead, I feel like she'd go WAY too far in acts of service and offer to kill Sam when Charlotte opens up about how horrible he is. She knows how to bury a body, after all, after helping her sister "move Stanley to Clivesdale". Nothing like murdering your crush's abusive husband, eh? That would spiral her. Speaking of, I've definitely spiralled. Hang on I'll get back on the topic at hand.
I think Charlotte would have a better relatsionship with God and queerness. She's def the type of queer married person to say "Yeah, I used to like my friend Karen, but then I fell in love with Sam, so ofc I'm not gay!" And Ruth is just looking at her with her mouth wide open and just. Points at the bisexual flag in her room.
I also think she'd open up to Bill about it. At first, she'd just be talking about Ruth and Alice, since they're together Friends, but then she gets onto the subject of looking after a queer kid, then the subject of her own growing knowledge of her queerness. Bill would just keep carefully pouring the wine and by the end of it she's confessed her undying love for the woman that protested the school's gendered bathrooms being too close together.
I kinda went off rails and also kinda didn't answer the question but I also kinda lost speed so. THere. My beauties.
