the thing is that for all its supposed faults, i would take this brand of 90s utopian globalism over whatever the fuck we’ve been doing for the last 10 years in a heartbeat
the post about people being silly about nationalities and country names is on my dash again and it reminded me of some extreeeeemely ridiculous interactions I've had with people about aotearoa. including but not limited to:
someone saying "ah yes. the continent of 'aotearoa' lol that's definitely how it's spelt" before telling me with much frustration that "it's spelt AUSTRALIA" after mentioning it in a conversation on discord
being asked with full sincerity "aotearoa? is that like narnia or something?" (after I mentioned Real World Context about ecology here)
mentioning that I was going down south to see the southern alps and having someone respond "alabama? or another state?"
someone saying "oh you're visiting hawaii, nice" after I mentioned a few towns I would be visiting on a road trip (rotorua, taupō, ahuriri, etc)
bonus: people misspelling it as aorta or areola or ateroa or aroterra. I love you all. it's aotearoa [:
it's shocking how many times I have to say "no, that's a real country in polynesia, and I live there" but it DOES make me giggle whenever people find a creative new way to be confused about the existence of these islands

imo the way you feel about groups it's fully socially acceptable to hate (like children or polyamorous people, among others) is the canary in the coal mine for underlying bigoted beliefs. if you're only supportive of marginalized groups when it's cool to do so, probably you don't actually care about marginalized groups, you care about other people thinking you care
there are 1 trillion people in the notes of this post saying "yeah! i mean i hate kids but they should have rights!" you hate kids? you mean you hate all members of an oppressed group solely for their membership in this group? right. why do you hate them? because they can't take care of themselves and need help? because they don't understand social norms and can be "annoying" and disrespect boundaries as a result? because they can be messy? because they don't understand things in the same way as you do? that's awesome. how do you feel about disabled people btw

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.
and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.
