The last of the roars dwindle into the nighttime wind, withering into dying hums. Inches above the surface of the water, she stands, as if held there by a puppetteer’s strings.
The silty ocean shallows lap around your ankles as you dash toward her flowing silhouette, the loose sand threatening to foil every step. Finally, as your pace slows and you fight for each breath, her limbs appear to relax. Suddenly she’s floating as if it’s a normal law of nature, toetips just dipping into the water.
As she turns toward you, her finned capes swirl around her, and the glowing turquoise arcs of her twin swords fade. The dark blue hues of her robes could nearly disappear into the night, but the gold of her hair and the silver of her single graceful horn catch the starlight, just enough that you couldn’t possibly lose sight of her.
Though, that thought presses more fear into your heart now than anything else.
Your gaze fixed on her impossibly ultramarine eyes, the distance between you closes before you’ve realized, and suddenly she’s gazing down at you, silently. If you didn’t know her typical composure so intimately by now, you might not have noticed the slight waver in her expression and the slight desperation of her breath.
But you do notice. And just as you begin to speak—
“You’re safe now.”
Her calm, deep voice comes before your own can escape. And even though the wrath of Tacet Discords that had surrounded her still leaves its traces in the frothing of the waters, in spite of your own racing heartbeat, you believe her.
Your pulse slows a little at last. Though, that’s only half of your worries right now.
You’re close enough now to see the details of her skin, dimly in the starlight, but enough to see that she’s untouched. No injuries—only the salty spray kicked up by combat settling on her as she rests.
Something feels forbidden about touching such a being. Maybe it’s that she’s so ethereal, so immaculate. The veils that billow behind her are so light and sheer. Or maybe it’s that she towers over you, over any human.
But she starts to sink down, gradually. Her toes no longer dance above the impenetrable surface. The uncannily still water embraces her ankles as if welcoming her home. Her bare toes settle in the supple sand. And she reaches out for you.
Her hand is armored. As much as you wish it could be otherwise, it’s like the distant, reassuring touch of a knight. She places it on your shoulder, just long enough for you to feel its size and weight.
Her eyes still hold you transfixed. Her numerous earrings glint like the stars themselves. And then, she lowers her head.
It takes you a few long moments to realize that, in fact, she’s not just lowering her head—she’s lowering her entire body. Her shoulders, which until now had loomed far over yours, now rest level to your own. She instead leans her entire upper body against you as she kneels in the shallows, and her hand drops just enough to offer a loose embrace at your waist.
It’s just awkward enough to be noticeable, given the length of her limbs. But to you, that’s not a bad thing.
As she rests her head, the tip of her horn just brushes by your hair. The humid ocean air feels frigid, just for that instant. And then, the warmth returns as she envelops you.
Once the wall of disbelief drops from your senses, you allow yourself to take in everything about her form. The curves and sharpness of her face; the slight stickiness of her ocean-carressed hair; the profound softness of her chest resting against your own. As she breathes steadily, you guess that you hear a slight smile in her exhale, and you can only hope that you’re right.
That maybe, you’ve seen beneath the impenetrable surface for just a heartbeat. That the petite woman you first met her as, and that doubtless she’ll fade back into soon, has just peeked through, content enough with the vulnerability. Only for you.
You allow her hair to tickle your nose as the wind plays with it. You open your eyes just long enough to witness the vast sky, and the infinite ocean beyond the both of you. Her pisciform capes are carried out by the current until they reach their full length, the flawless image of the aquatic lifeform that they take after. Sea sparkle dances and flickers as the timid waves circle around you, forming a glittering shell on the surface.
She remains nearly motionless as you venture to stroke her hair. Then, emboldened, your palm circles around her head. Your fingertips rest at the edge of the Tacet Mark adorning the center of her forehead, and she shudders imperceptibly. The minute vibrations making up your two frequencies resonate, inaudible, but tangible in every nerve.
You yearn to never interrupt that perfect harmony. So you breathe for a few seconds more. But at the same time, it’s a fleeting chance for her to hear your voice, reassuring, right in her ear. You don’t know if a time like this will ever find you again. So you speak:
