Flight of Fear at Kings Island!

Much like its sister coaster at Kings Dominion I covered yesterday, Kings Island's Flight of Fear is also a very fast paced, twisted and slightly disorienting ride in the dark. The layout, described very aptly as a "spaghetti bowl", has just over 2,700 feet of crammed into this building, including four inversions. Those inversions being a double inverting cobra roll, sidewinder and a corkscrew.

With the ride being in the dark, other than a few glowing multi-colored lights the park has turned on at floor level, of course you can't see where you're going or what's coming up next. That is both a pro and a con depending on how you look at it. Mainly, it's a pro because it definitely amps up the out of control feeling the ride can have. Flying through the dark with just the sound of air rushing by and the sound of the ride itself is definitely a fun and fairly unique experience, as most enclosed coasters like this and its sister at Kings Dominion are not nearly as extreme.

The con that comes from the ride being totally in the dark and as twisted as it is, is that it can be more disorienting and potentially nauseating than most other coasters. I very rarely get nauseous on rides of any kind, especially not roller coasters, but the Flight of Fears are some of the only ones that felt like the started heading in that direction for me. Not to the point where I really felt sick or anything, but disoriented me a bit more than I had expected going in. It was definitely still a fun ride that I do enjoy, but if you're someone susceptible to motion sickness, just be aware of that going into the ride.

Outside of the ride experience itself, again similarly to Kings Dominion's Flight of Fear, this is one of Kings Island's best themed coasters. Originally opening under the park's Paramount years and themed to the 1995 reboot of the 1960s sci-fi anthology series The Outer Limits, the show tie-in was dropped by 2001, but the alien theme has remained to this day. Guests walk around and into a giant UFO in the ride's queue line and there are alien specimens in tubes in the ride's station. Since the ride has separate load and unload platforms, trains return to the station without the guests it launched off with, heightening the mystery and intrigue for first time riders. When I rode Flight of Fear back in 2019, more of the theming elements in the queue seemed to be working, which is what puts this one a notch above Kings Dominion's FoF for me.

Kings Island's Flight of Fear also fits in much better with its surrounding area than Kings Dominion's FoF does. At Kings Island, the ride is in the Area 72 section of the park, formerly known as X-Base. This area is themed to a secret government military base, which Flight of Fear fits right into. The ride's longtime neighbor Firehawk also worked well for this are. Even with Firehawk now gone and Orion in its place, the area still works well for both rides, especially with the revamp Orion brought with it, taking the area from X-Base to Area 72.

As much as I love the Flight of Fears, I do prefer the outdoor versions of the layout a little bit more, but that's a coaster for another day.

i made bi pride logos for (most of) my top ten + some others!!  theyre in order from left to right! my numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 9!!! disaster transport and orion are here because theyre both funky little dudes n i love them much.   they may look pixel-y but that’s bc they’re sized specifically for tumblr’s 128 x 128 avatar size. i tested them all on desktop and they looked good (mako is a little hard to read but that was unforch the only transparent logo i could find :( ).  okay to use with credit!!
