Tunesday #39 – Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird
I’ve been operating on the assumption that it was Monday all day. Hence my surprise when I got my phone reminder to “write Tunesday” at 2:30 today. I’m even less prepared for this than I usually am. So here’s a song you might like.
I’m aware I haven’t really written about music for a good month or so. It’s your choice to read this, okay. Any emotional trauma from doing so is self-inflicted.
Bonus note: The only reason I'm posting this track is that Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird's front man Lachy Rose spells Lachy the same way I spell Lachy. Us anti-phonetic arseholes have to stick together.
Tunesday #29 – Courtney Barnett, Flume & Tom Misch (again!)
Ummmm, Courtney Barnett released a song about 2 minute noodles.
Good For You by Milk! Records Projects
And, uhhhh, Flume dropped a new dig about idk love or something.
To make up for that laziness in both tune-digging and blog-writing, here’s a limerick about Flume:
There was a young producer named Harley Four fifths of his tracks were quite gnarly His electronic grooves Became kinda huge And now bogans dance to them in Bali
I’d hazard a guess that there’ll be some less mainstream stuff comin’ atcha later on this week, probably in the form of a Tunesday Dig.
PS: As this blog is little more than a Tom Misch fan page, it’d be remiss of me to leave out the new beat he posted on Soundy yesterday. EnJOY.!
Dig #5 – S.J. Smith
So it’s the first Tunesday Dig of the year, which means that Melbourne mate S.J. Smith will be eligible for the inaugural Tunesday Golden Shovel that I’ll give out to my favourite dig of 2016*.
I believe I’ve heard some of his sounds in the past, probably just by flâneur-ing about the bluestone-paved streets of Melbourne. It’s a pretty cool city if you’ve never been – the quality of our buskers is only exceeded by our apparent willingness to pay more than $5.50 for a small latte. And we’re supposedly the world’s most livable city, a stat you’d NEVER, EVER hear us bring up in a conversation with a Sydneysider or Brisbaniac.
Anyway, I feel like I’m getting a little off track here. Back in December, S.J. released a really cool indie pop number called Caravan, complete with ooh-oohs, super-chill guitar vibes and a boppy drum track worth its weight in Melbourne’s very best bluestone. Give it a listen below.
The single’s slated to be officially launched at The Toff In Town this Sunday. I’d probably make an appearance if it wasn’t my Mum’s birthday and if my bank account was in better shape, but it’s only $10 so you should go along.
*This is a joke btw. For now.
Tunesday #27 – The Cactus Channel x Chet Faker
So last week I revealed (“revealed”) my hottest 100 ballot, and, as I mentioned in that post, I always forget something pretty crucial when making such lists. I don’t know what you define as crucial, but for me, Chet Faker teaming up with the funky lads and ladettes of The Cactus Channel is more crucial than having a first aid kit at arms length if you ever find yourself in Heidelberg West, and that’s pretty bloody crucial.
We got just the two tracks from the Chet x Cactus collaboration, but they’re both absolute tunes so have a listen.
Dig #3 – Laurence
After stumbling upon Melbo-based artist Laurence and his lowest of lo-fi sounds via Unearthed a few months ago and sneaking a few DLs, his tracks just kinda sat in my iTunes, gathering electronic dust (side note: just like a lot of dust is supposedly human skin, most electronic dust is made up of the perished pixels of MySpace DPs). But after another listen a few weeks ago, the tracks hit me like a drunk chick at the Melbourne Cup, so I laid down a hard-earned* $2 to buy the EP on Bandcamp and thought I’d chuck a pair of them up as a dig.

Tunesday #22 – Flamingo Jones
It’s the first day of summer, so fasten your bucket hat, dust off the beach cricket bat and tune into some calypso-infused flindy dance pop from Flamingo Jones.
Bonus crafty video:
My favourite bear related creation since Bear’s Den, Boy & Bear, Bear Grylls and, of course, this nugget.
