A woman's work is never done
Unearthed, vol. 20 :: New Yearâs Eve (1970s)
Weâre back with a seasonally appropriate Unearthed mix of dusty live tapes, this one made up entirely of recordings from various New Years Eves throughout the 1970s. As with any good NYE party, itâs equal parts groovy, boozy and chaotic. Hit play at 10:30pm on December 31 and you can time it just right to hear JJ Cale welcome you to 1976.
Parliament/Funkadelic, âMaggot Brainâ (Detroit 1977) ++ The Grateful Dead, âChina Cat Sunflower / I Know You Riderâ (San Francisco 1971) ++ DEVO, âGotta Serve Somebodyâ (Long Beach 1979) ++ John Cale, âCasey at the Batâ (NYC 1977) ++ The Modern Lovers, âShe Crackedâ (NYC 1973) ++ Television, âAdventureâ (NYC 1976) ++ Patti Smith, âRedondo Beachâ (NYC 1976) ++ The Allman Brothers, âMountain Jamâ (New Orleans 1970) ++ Lou Reed, âSister Rayâ (Bryn Mawr 1972) ++ JJ Cale, âAfter Midnightâ (Tulsa 1975)
Ah, the early parts of the writing process where youâre figuring out Just How Clever You Must Be. My favorite.
At least Iâve settled on a protagonist name.
She has been christened Vivian Schmerl. Hooray!
The year is bleeding by
And I have no choice but to accept the way our lives are turning out

So UNEARTHED is Jason Todd inspired right?
Iâm writing their protagonistsâ parents as two different versions of Bruce:
the neglectful and brash side (that is used only as a plot device and contradicts his actual character)
and
the complacent side that tries hard to remedy past failings but always falls short (bc dc writers love drama for money making reasons).
BUT Iâm so so so lost on writing the second half because itâs clear that these are conflicting personalities but the parent needs to have reasons for not caring.
I love character studies but this is agonizing
Where it all began.
