Flipz is the female character for Wild Grinders, who’s actually a skater. We have no other girls. We are going to talk about her because she LITERALLY has no competition.

Let’s begin with her origins. She was created in between Goggles and Stubford. It’s a time where Tracy was done creating Goggles for that current toy wave, but she was created before the TV series made Stubford at last minute for the antagonistic character. The creation behind Flipz was definitely planned, but they didn’t put a lot of intention into it (if that makes sense). Many people will assume that she was created to be a love interest for Lil’ Rob, but that’s not actually the truth. In Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory and Ridiculousness, he had Chanel West Coast as the receptionist and occasional co-host(?). She appeared in the episodes often and Dyrdek wanted thought it would be neat to have her own character be a part of the Wild Grinders world. (Tracy has his self-insert too, don’t worry, as ‘Captain Grindstar’). There were other members from the MTV series as well, but they decided to use the Lil’ Rob formula on Chanel West Coast (aka just make a younger version of herself).

In webisode 2, Tracy explained that Dyrdek asked if she wanted to become a Wild Grinder and Chanel was like “Hell yea” at the idea. She wanted to do voice acting for her. And here’s the thing, she was given voice lines that were ‘oof’ sound effects. No flirting lines, no teasing lines. She was told to say ‘oof’ and ‘ow’ and ‘ack’. And her character is to be very enthusiastic. Rob Dyrdek never formed any kind of crush @ Chanel and the platonic dynamic between Flipz and Lil’ Rob was kept.

Not only was her personality kept tame, but Flipz’s design itself. It’s a funny banter between Tracy and Chanel during the webisode. Basically, she asked him why Flipz didn’t have boobs and Tracy was like “she’s twelve??” Then Chanel said she had boobs at that age, but Tracy said that he didn’t have boobs at that age either. It’s definitely well-intentioned on Tracy’s side, but I still have the feeling he’s just not good at gorl design.

But yeah, Flipz was carefully planned out as a character. Hell, she even had vital moments in the TV series that built her character. However the real downfall of her character would always due to her gender. Western audiences will always do unusual things for female characters in a boy-protagonist cartoon. Even for anime dubs too. (In the eng dub of Sakura Cardcaptor, Sakura’s entire personality became tomboyish in order for the anime to be feasible enough for boys to watch too). But it’s 2012 for Flipz. It really just depends on the decision of the director/writer for what they want to portray in their female characters. Honestly, we are old enough to admit that the way that most men write female characters will leave a bad taste in our mouth.

If anything, Flipz didn’t get the worst of it. Th treatment that she received was that Lil’ Rob would always have main-character’s-undefeatable-skills to beat her at skating. And this was the main thing Flipz had to deal with.

It kinda builds her character in a way. I like the idea of Flipz being a rival to Lil’ Rob. But she’s not mean about it or harasses him. She just wants to compete against Lil’ Rob at skating. Nothing else. And this can reach out to other male characters too. She wants to be treated with the same respect that they have and not be pushed into a feminine category (aka it’s like the trend of ‘girl math’ that’s been floating around in 2023). To Flipz, all skating is skating. But she thinks that girls need to have that boost of representation that they don’t often get in sports. And honestly, that’s really neat of her (if only the writers could have written it a better).

In season 1 of Wild Grinders, she was clearly intended to be written a tomboy. She doesn’t know what unicorns are and she loves to play basketball. Her main motif is music because Chanel West Coast is rapper. But a lot of her outside interests involve sports like skateboarding and basketball. And she’s good at it, but she understands that her strengths will be overshadowed by men doing the same exact thing. There’s a reason why she gets pissed at Xavier when he made fun of the idea that ‘girl skaters’ exists. And proceeded to kick his ass.

One of things that kinda weaken her character is that the writers didn’t know what to do for her. They just made her a support and not the rival. And then they try to make Emo Crys and Spitball develop semi-crush on her? Like, you have a perfectly good base for a female character and all you do is make her a lukewarm companion? Get out of my house.

The Flipz that I know is girl who can go head-to-head @ Lil’ Rob. The people she admires are usually the sporty type and that’s why she’s most drawn to Lil’ Rob. My reason for saying that is because the only time Flipz goes gaga is over Sir Percival, a famous European football player. Could Flipz develop a crush on Lil’ Rob as well? Possibly, but if they’re still rivals at the end of the day and want to have fun together. (Let me tell you, my most hated trope is tomboys softening when in love). Nah, Flipz would bang on Lil’ Rob’s window at 2 in the morning to play a game of S.K.A.T.E. and get tacos. Aside from the discussions of romance, Flipz is a character who wants to boost the voices of girls who skate and do sports. But there’s such a lack of female characters who skate in the TV series, that she really has nothing to do.

What do you think of flipz? Would you like to see her more involved if the show continued?

Flipz is literally the reason why I've been in this fandom since 2013. Like, if it weren't for her appearance on screen and during the promos, I would not attempt to even watch Wild Grinders.

Like she was just a vibrant and noticeable female character who got featured in one of the bumpers and my brain said 'we should give the skateboard cartoon a chance'.

But honestly, she was just a neat character design to me at the time. It was the combination of pink and blue that caught my eye. For some odd reason, my brain believed that if they put a female character into an all-boys cast, then there would have to be some drama or plot involved. During the time the TV series was airing, my brain assumed everyone was an older teenager due to Nickelodeon often airing things meant for teenagers such as iCarly and Drake & Josh. (As of today, Wild Grinders has to 100% be more of a preteen series considering the lack of teenage drama in it).

But yeah, it would be nice to see Flipz be more involved. Most of the time, she's just sort of an accessory character to the cast. Meanwhile Shark Attack feels more like a real character compared to her status. It would have been really nice to have an episode that actually reflected her motivation to join the Wild Grinders. In fact, they should have focused on the way she becomes competitive to Lil' Rob and be more of a rivalry character to make things more interesting.

Some episodes still try to make her competitive @ Lil' Rob, but they end up being brief and anti-climatic. The rest of her character falls flat when she has to be a supporting character instead of a rival. The best moment that Flipz ever had was wrecking Xavier. We need that energy of her wanting to challenge everyone to always outdo herself and improve.

I tried the Flipz State Fair Strawberry Shortcake Flavored Covered Pretzels and these were pretty good.

These had a light strawberries and cream flavor and the frosting was creamy. The pretzels were crunchy while a little salty to me. These kind of taste like the strawberry ice cream to me.

Got at CVS but Sam's Club and Michael's sells these too.

I would eat this again.

I tried the Flipz State Fair Churros Flavored Covered Pretzels and these were pretty good.

The cream had a light caramel cinnamon taste and was creamy. The pretzels were crunchy and this was sweet while salty but lightly of both to me.

I would eat these again.

Got at CVS but Sam's Club and Michael's sells these too.
