The Evolution of Angiosperms

Flowering plants (angiosperms) first evolved around 140 million years ago. Nothing much happened for the first 40 million years - flowers were small and insignificant and the earliest flowers were pollinated by beetles. Then something amazing happened...

At the beginning of the Upper Cretaceous Period (100 mya), flowers developed nectaries for the first time and a few million years later the first petals appear. At this same moment, predatory wasps evolved into vegetarian bees and because bees can see in color, petals became a form of advertising. Bees also developed pollen baskets and sticky hairs on their back legs which make it far more likely that pollination will be successful.

I bring this to your attention because magnolias are one of the oldest families of petal-producing, flowering plants. Strange to think that the epic battle between Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops was fought against a background of magnolia trees.
