Because When Else Were They Gonna Do It?
What She Said: "Come on, Dextyn! You gotta make sure we're safe. Do the manly thing and go scout around. Don't come back until the sun is just over that ridge. No, I swear I'm not plannin' anything! You just really wore me out. I was gonna take a nap so we could go for a walk when you got back. Yes, I know sound like an old lady. So do you, complaining and shit! Just gooo. I promise I'll cook the cattail roots for ya....Dex, just try them. You might like 'em....Okay, I'll see ya later. Love you. Be careful. Yell if you need anything. Yeah, love you, too...Get some firewood, too, Babe!"
What She Did: Anna Lime had never been one for theatrics. Sure, she could be a litter over dramatic. Sure, she could exaggerate the hell out of things. Okay, maybe she hated theatrics because it highlighted the fact she was an overdramatic little shit. So when she told Dextyn she had nothing planned, of course she was lying.
The minute Dextyn was out of view, she got to work, piling up blankets, pillows, her pocket knife, the cattail roots, the shampoo and soap, and the water purification chemicals along with two empty bottles of water. Carefully, she wrapped her CD player and CDs in a blanket and closed the plastic box they were all packed into. Then, she scribbled a note in her journal and tore out the page - a note to John telling him where they would be so he didn't worry.
Here was the plan: give Dextyn an actual date. No worries, no distractions, just some good music, food, and the stream. They would watch the sunset and she would teach him the constellations and it would be absolutely perfect.
Getting to the stream without Dextyn to support her resulted in several bruises and unnecessary cursing to the tress, but she had to hurry. There was literally no time to waste here. Most of her time was going to spent trying to do something extremely difficult: fish. Of course, Anna had fished before, but had always used professional equipment. Trying to fish by turning her knife into a spear was another story. After several useless attempts to spearfish, she gave up and ripped a pillowcase apart, tying one end on either side of the stream. This...also failed, but not as badly. Anna recognized a few skinny Rainbow Trout in her hours of fishing and she tied them up in the pillowcase, letting the fabric skim over the water so they stayed fresh.
The girl went to work on the fire, collecting the driest wood she could and assembling a small campfire. Anna figured Dextyn would bring at least an armful with him, too. In all honesty, she was too tired by then to try lighting it. Instead, she'd just wait for her mecha-dork to use that convenient blow torch in his finger. Ah, the usefulness of the half machine man.
Finally, Anna grimaced as she checked off everything on her list and saw she had one last chore: actually bathing herself. The last time had been enjoyable with Dextyn at her side...and then inside...but now she was alone and this was going to be a pain. Still, she got it done and not ten minutes later was she shivering on the shore, cursing herself for not bringing a towel.
When the sun hit the mark she had pointed Dextyn to, she was back at the camp, acting like nothing had happened. In fact, as she saw him coming, she yawned and stretched. "Oh hey, I just woke up!" she called to him, waving.
