"What about this one?" Kagome said, holding up her wrist. Inuyasha leaned over before sniffing a few times. His nose wrinkled before he turned away, sneezing loudly. Sighing, she pulled a wipe from her bag, scrubbing at her skin. "That's a no."

Inuyasha rubbed his face, bangs standing on end. "Why are you testing this shit out on me, anyway?"

Rolling her eyes like it was obvious, she stuffed the newest bottle of perfume into her bag. "I can't go around making Sesshoumaru sneeze."

"Except that it would be hilarious," muttered Inuyasha, eyeing her bag.

Kagome made a point of buckling the pocket. "Don't even think about it!"

"Oh, come on, K'gome! It would only be as a last resort."

"A last resort during some important meeting or event, you mean," she countered, daring him to argue. Her friend blinked at her innocently, but his ears were flat against his head, giving him away.

"What's your point?" he asked.

Kagome thrust a finger in his face. "If he so much as sniffles, I'm coming after you." Inuyasha shrugged sheepishly, and she bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing. He was being a good sport, considering she was being courted by his brother.

Sneak Peek

Silence bled into the surrounding darkness, tension rising as Jaken struggled not to fidget. Had he missed something before they’d made camp? Rin hadn’t complained about anything outright, but maybe something critical had come up when she’d been conversing with the other humans. He opened his mouth to apologize, but jumped when a foot stamped down next to him.

“Hey! He’s talking to you!” Jaken’s eyes bulged out of his head as he stared up at the human woman. Hands on her hips, dark waves bounced off her shoulders as she glared at the western lord. “You can at least answer his question.”

Lord Sesshoumaru’s gaze lingered for a moment before sliding to the miko. Being the object of his attention didn’t faze her. In fact, it only incensed her more, and she crossed her arms over her chest before raising her chin.

Jaken looked between the two, sputtering in disbelief before finally finding his voice. “Ignorant wench! You dare to speak to Lord Sesshoumaru in that tone?”

Dark brows furrowed as she looked down at him. “You don’t have to take that. He’s being rude.” The statement was so straightforward and matter-of-fact that it stunned Jaken into silence. What kind of reasoning was that? This was how he was always spoken to.

“You’re not part of this conversation!” he shot back. “Your opinion is unneeded!”

Sapphire eyes turned stormy, the air stirring as sparks of reiki curled around her fingers. Jaken turned to face her, taking on a defensive stance. He would defend his master’s dignity.

A sigh had them both jerking to attention. Jaken barely managed to keep his mouth from falling open as his lord adjusted his position against the tree. “We will leave when Rin is ready,” he stated, eyes sliding closed.

A snort preceded the crunch of dirt under her heels as the woman spun away. Jaken’s fingers dug into the base of his staff, glancing over his shoulder as he bowed again.

Did this woman have a death wish?

The Nutcracker Lord

I've been sitting on this idea ever since I started writing, and I'm finally getting around to it! So, of course it went from three parts to me being 10k and five chapters in with no end in sight. Luckily @mrfeenysmustache was nice enough to join me in this chaos and create some lovely illustrations.

Summary: As a world-travelling dancer, it isn't often that Kagome makes it home for Christmas. Making the most of her trip, she plays the role of dutiful daughter, helping her mother prepare for her annual Christmas party. But a lone wooden figure under the tree catches her eye, leading her into a world of magic drenched in turmoil, and she'll need more than a pair of shoes to get out unscathed.

Edging around the side of the tree, Kagome jumped back when something crinkled under her feet. She was about to yell at Kouga for opening his presents early but frowned when she realized the tissue paper was still inside the box. Kneeling down, she pushed a gnarled branch out of the way to reveal two pairs of gleaming, golden eyes.

They were made of wood, the paint of their uniforms untarnished—one in red, the other in white—and she lifted them out of the open box. There was no tag, no ripped ribbon, and she looked between the two figures, trying to decide who they were for—or from.

"I see you've found our newly invited guests," a familiar voice rumbled. Kagome nearly dropped the statues, on the verge of jumping to her feet when the daiyoukai sat down beside her. How he managed to do so in his three-piece suit was beyond her, but she was used to chalking it up to youkai magic.

Her eyes moved between the figures and her uncle. "You're supposed to run all invitations by Mama first."

He chuckled, his long silver hair tied back into a high ponytail. Most demons were more subtle about their appearance, trying to blend into their surroundings, but not Touga. He made a point of showing off his markings whenever possible, be it pulling his hair back or rolling up his sleeves. Mama constantly called him out on it, though it was more for Izayoi's sake than anything else.

"In this case, I think she'll make an exception." He had a mysterious twinkle in his eye that always preceded mischief, and Kagome held the two figures up to the light.

"Who are they?" she asked, turning them sideways.

An uncharacteristic sigh escaped his lips. "Two boys pretending to be men," he answered. "Both too big for their britches, which, incidentally, got them cursed into these forms in the first place."
