Sigur Rós - Flugufrelsarinn
Thanks to that Sigur Rós ask, I listened to some Sigur Rós at work and now I’ve just got Flugufrelsarinn stuck in my head constantly. I hope you’re happy.
(I came across some English translations of it, of varying quality. They generally translate the title as “The Fly Saviour”, which doesn’t quite capture the fact frelsarinn is specifically the saviour as in Jesus. It literally translates as ‘freer’, as in one who frees, rather than one who saves. The lyrics are pretty cryptic, but there is also a reference to sacrifice, and a word that could either be “sins” or “swims” but in context is probably “swims”; most of the English translations seem to go with “sins”, which maaaaybe makes sense if this is all a Jesus metaphor somehow? And the line with the grammar error is “I need a miracle.” WHO KNOWS.)
(The literal lyrics, for all their crypticness, speak to me somewhere, though. I don’t know if they’re meant to be taken literally at all, but I can’t help but imagine the narrator simply as a child, trying to rescue flies from being eaten. I used to try to rescue earthworms off the street in the rain. Children can be cruel, but they can also be super-empathetic in a way adults generally aren’t - same with intense empathy for inanimate objects, feeling bad that an object might get lonely or cold or scared. I can really picture a child just gripped with empathy for flies and wanting to save them, and there’s something that tugs at my heartstrings in that. Probably something adjacent to #me and toys.)
(Spotify link for the benefit of those who have no idea what I’m talking about and want to listen to eight minutes of beautiful ethereal music about maybe child empathy and maybe Jesus.)
I wanted to draw all my guild wars 2 characters but I didn’t know where to put them, so four it is XD

holy shit the way that the music builds up and the way Jónsi sings at 6:08 in Flugufrelsarinn is so beautiful. I mean the whole thing is beautiful but goddamn.
