Flybrix lets you create toy drones with Lego bricks

Having a drone is getting a trend now a days. But the good ones don’t come cheap & not all are child friendly. A bunch of MIT, Caltech & UW Madison alumni has designed a drone kit called Flybrix that lets anyone get involved in the fun of designing & building a drone using Lego as its foundation.

The Flybrix kit will come with everything you will need to make a drone that can fly like propeller arms, a motor, a battery & a chip to control it all. With the cheapest package of the drone you can fly it with your existing smartphone as a Bluetooth controller via the Flybrix app for both iOS & Android. On the other hand the deluxe kit comes with a dedicated dual-stick controller for better control.

The kit is child friendly & comes with proper instructions. As it is a drone built with Legos crashing it won’t be a problem. At most the drones will separate from each other that you can re-attach later. Using Legos as the construction of the drones comes with some benefits like you can make many interesting stuffs with it like robot drone, pirate drone, quadcopter, octacopter etc. You can also use your existing Lego collection to build drones.

Flybrix says its software is open source and easy to modify to suit your needs. You could additionally add Wi-Fi and GPS modules to the PCB to enhance your build. There’s also a Chrome extension that lets you view and record data from the PCB’s on-board sensors and adjust settings.

Flybrix is available now, at a temporarily low introductory price of $150 for the base package. The deluxe kit costs $190. After the launch period is over, the basic pack will jump from $150 to $190 and the deluxe kit will go from $190 to $250.
