Speaking of Sonic Adventure, what exactly was the Egg Carrier suppose to accomplish for Eggman? He seemed very proud of it, following two gargantuan space stations.

The thing about gargantuan space stations is they aren’t very maneuverable or easy to access. The earth is always in motion, not just in an orbit around the sun, but spinning. This is why you hear NASA talk about “launch windows” and stuff, because going in to space is equal parts complex math and just really, really good timing. And repositioning yourself once you’re in space? Moving requires fuel, which is heavy, expensive, and difficult to transport. Going to and operating something like the Death Egg undoubtedly took a lot of effort. Never mind maintenance.

So what we have to compare to is Wing Fortress and Flying Battery.

The Egg Carrier is definitely bigger and more powerful than Wing Fortress. Sonic traverses Wing Fortress end to end in a couple minutes on average. Comparatively, we’re meant to get the impression Sonic only sees part of The Egg Carrier, perhaps around half of it (one wing), and it takes ~3 minutes.

The Flying Battery is probably bigger than the Egg Carrier, but its been described as more of a blimp (which we see, in Sonic Generations). It also uses a lot more helicopter rotors, again, suggesting it probably can’t maneuver very well. It probably hovers and drifts but can’t make tight point turns.

The Egg Carrier seems to solve these problems. It’s bigger, more fearsome, and more maneuverable. It can take off and land with ease. And then there’s the matter of firepower – the Egg Carrier has that gigantic laser, in addition to being lined with canons of all sizes (some bigger than a house!), and a launch pad for smaller fighter jets.

We see some of the Wing Fortress’s firepower (it damages the Tornado), but it seems like its probably basic turret fire. Flying Battery drops napalm on Angel Island, but otherwise doesn’t seem to have much offensive capabilities in itself – its more of a transport where Eggman stores captured animals.

The Egg Carrier on the other hand is the best of all worlds. It nearly kills Sonic and Tails! It’s easy to gloss over that because its treated like its almost kind of funny, but they were literally inches away from being turned to dust by the Egg Carrier’s laser. That thing sliced through half of the Tornado like it was a hot knife through butter. Just one step to the right and Sonic wouldn’t exist anymore.

That’s pretty impressive.
