Monster World Successor, Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom Debuts Gameplay In New Trailer
It’s been a little over 20 years since we seen an entry from SEGA‘s Wonder Boy/Monster World series with the final game being 1994’s Monster World IV on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. The series began with the original game, Wonder Boy coming out in the arcades back in 1986 and receiving a port on the Sega Master System which for those who had one, myself included, the home version was our first introduction to the action adventure platformer. Wonder Boy in Monster Land was the the next game in the series that hit both arcade and Master System followed by Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair which debuted in arcades in 1988 and then on the Mega Drive in Japan and Europe 2 years after. There was also second Wonder Boy III game, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap for the Master System 1989 and ported to the Game Gear 92. Finally ending the series with the last 2 releases, Wonder Boy in Monster World the 5th game in the series which released for the Mega Drive/Genesis in 91 and Monster World IV, the 6th (I know, confusing) and final game which only released in Japan on the Mega Drive in 1994 but became localized in later collections of the series.
Oddly enough the series also spawned the Adventure Island series. Wait….what? Thats right, the original NES Adventure Island that we all know and love began development as a direct port of the arcade version of Wonder Boy but while in development, the decision was made to change the character design of the protagonist of Wonder Boy into Master Higgins. I know weird. The Wonder Boy/Monster World series went on to more of an RPG platformer while the Adventure Island series kept to the original action platformer style of the first Wonder Boy game. Unlike Adventure Island which received it’s last entry in 2009 on the Wii with Adventure Island: The Beginning, the Wonder Boy/Monster World series would only see re releases through Classic Collection releases.
However, all was not lost, especially in the current generation of crowdfunding and spiritual successors came a Kickstarter campaign for a game called Flying Hamster II: Knight of the Golden Seed by Game Atelier. Flying Hamster II was set to be the follow up sequel to original Flying Hamster game which released for the PSP and was later ported to iOS and the PS Vita but instead of being a SHMUP like the original game, took on more of an action RPG platormer heavily inspired by the Wonder Boy/Monster World series. However, a few weeks after the Kickstarter was started, the campaign was cancelled as a third party publisher, FDG Entertainment stepped in to help fund the project. Fast forward to January of 2015, Ryuichi Nishizawa (creator of the original Monster World) was brought on board to work with the team at Game Atelier transforming Flying Hamster II into Monster Boy (as SEGA owned the license to the Monster World name) making it an official part of the series.
Over the next couple of months, the team showed off progress of the game on the Monster Boy blog with various screenshots and announcements like bringing in YouTube personality/musician Banjo Guy Ollie and famed video game composer Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Actraiser) on board as well as Motoi Sakuraba (Tales of Series, Star Ocean, Golden Sun), Michiru Yamane (Castlevania Series), and Keiki Kobayashi (Ace Combat, Tekken, Ridge Racer) for the games soundtrack. The game’s subtitle was also later changed from Monster Boy and The Wizard of Booze to Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom. However, the biggest announcement occurred over the holiday when we finally got our first look of game in action with the debut gameplay trailer. Check out this baby in action below:
From the looks of it Monster Boy looks and sounds like a true successor of the Monster World series and even featured some nice nods to the previous games like the smoking pig-man. The game was originally set for a 2015 release but was delayed until early 2016 to polish up this wonderful throwback. Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom is set to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC via Steam and we can’t wait to get our hands on the Monster World adventure. Until then, I’ll be enjoying the SEGA Vintage Collection of Monster World on Xbox One thanks to Backwards Compatibility. Don’t have a the original consoles, Xbox 360 or an Xbox One? You can pick up both Wonder Boy in Monster World and Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair on Steam for $2.99 each in the Sega Genesis Classic Collection.

Flying Hamster 2 is now kind of an official Wonder Boy game!? ⊟
Flying Hamster 2 by The Game Atelier dropped the original’s shmup gameplay for a side-scrolling action-adventure inspired by the great Wonder Boy games. And now… it’s dropping the Flying Hamster part. Wonder Boy series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa has joined up with Game Atelier to work on the game, now called Monster Boy and the Wizard of Booze (I know). I’m looking forward to some animal transformations and nonlinear exploration!
According to an update on the Flying Hamster 2 Kickstarter page (FH2 backers will get this game as fulfillment), it’s now considered part of the Monster World series, which spun off from the Wonder Boy series. Via Polygon!

It was sad to hear that longtime Wonder Boy/Monster World developer Westone filed for bankruptcy last October, signaling a near end to the classic game developer.
However, all hope is not lost for fans of the series as Game Atelier has announced its working on a spiritual successor aptly named Monster Boy and the Wizard of Booze. What’s more, series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa is working with them in some capacity.
Game Atelier launched a Kickstarter campaign in April 2014 for a sequel to Flying Hamster, named Flying Hamster II: Knight of the Golden Seed. That game, we noted, was as much a spiritual successor to the Wonder Boy/Monster World franchise you could get. While things looked good for the success of their campaign, they closed their Kickstarter early as FDG Entertainment came forward to publish the game.
Since then, we haven’t heard much about Flying Hamster II, but it appears that the game might have morphed into Monster Boy.
If you look at the above image from the Flying Hamster II Kickstarter campaign, you’ll notice the far right character is in silhouette.
You’ll notice several of the characters appear to be similar, including the possible protagonist in Monster Boy.
Either way, we’ll try to chase down more information, but you can visit the game’s official website here, although there isn’t much info to be listed as of yet.
Calling all Wonder Boy/Monster World fans! There's a new game coming that will put a smile on your face. It was sad to hear that longtime Wonder Boy/Monster World developer Westone filed for bankruptcy last October, signaling a near end to the classic game developer.

On a lighter note, NASA has begun investing in flying-hamster-technology. Current research reports questionable results, at best.
