Dream Journal Entry “The Face That Was Almost Human”

I don’t know when the dream shifted from ordinary to wrong only that it did.

At first, he looked normal. A pale face suspended in darkness. Thick brows. Heavy lidded eyes. A faint, almost polite smile. The kind of face you pass in a crowd and forget.

But the longer I looked, the more something began to slip.

His skin wasn’t skin it was grainy, porous, like ash pressed into the shape of a man. His features seemed stamped on rather than grown. The eyes didn’t blink. They reset. Each time they closed, they reopened slightly misaligned, like someone adjusting a mask from behind.

His smile began to stretch.

Not wide just longer. The corners of his mouth tugged toward his ears in slow, patient increments. The skin didn’t tear. It thinned. It pulled tight over bone that seemed to be rearranging itself underneath. I could hear it faint clicking, like knuckles cracking inside his cheeks.

His nose sank inward, folding into his face as if it had lost structural support. His brows thickened, merging into a single heavy ridge that pressed lower and lower until his eyes were swallowed in shadow. The face was reorganizing. Reformatting.

And then the worst part:

The symmetry broke.

One side of his face lagged behind the other, sliding slightly downward, like wax softening under heat. His left eye drifted lower than the right, but the gaze never left me. It held me there. Studying me.

The smile split.

Not blood something darker. Not a wound an opening. As if the mouth wasn’t for speaking but for unfolding.

I tried to look away, but his face followed, stretching across the dark like a projection glitching and correcting itself. It was less like a man and more like an idea of a man struggling to stay assembled.

Right before I woke, his skin began to peel back not in strips, but in layers, revealing nothing underneath. No muscle. No bone. Just a hollow black cavity where a self should be.

And inside that emptiness, I heard breathing.

My breathing.

I woke up with my jaw clenched and the lingering sensation that something had been wearing a face and it almost remembered how to be human.

Emotional Tone: Uncanny, invasive, destabilizing Physical Sensation Upon Waking: Tight chest, dry mouth, lingering dread Possible Meaning: Fear of hidden identities, distorted perception, or the anxiety of something familiar becoming grotesquely unfamiliar.
