November's other mythological/folklore creature coloring page was the Ninki Nanka which is from folklore around the gambia river in the republic of gambia.
I'm endlessly fascinated by the convergent evolution of folklore between world cultures- almost everywhere has a lake monster myth of some kind that fills a similar purpose (usually to warn children/people of swimming in a dangerous area) but their descriptions vary wildly based on the environment/culture that birthed them (and the ambient wildlife to a certain extent- but I think just reducing folklore monsters to "oh well scary real animal lives here so it must be from that" is kind of flattening to the depths of human creativity too).
These are said to live in swamps and eat/swallow naughty children who might wander into their territory. Descriptions vary* -it's often described as "dragon like" (which is real subjective, because what is a dragon really? it depends) with the body of a crocodile, horse or giraffe-like head, horns and a huge mouth.
Hippos have huge mouths and are considerably more terrifying than crocodiles when you really look at them (they just seem to have better pr) so I ended up incorporating elements of hippos, crocodiles and then taking some liberties to make it into more of its own thing and less a chimeric looking thing (more dragon-y).

*another thing i love about folklore is you get lots of different iterations of the same idea even within one culture too! there is almost never one canon idea/concept, just lots of different versions that are all correct and valid.
