Safe and Sound walked so folklore could run
Thinking.
I came across a definition of “folklore” around here. It said something along the lines of “the traditional stories and culture of a group of people”. I never actually stopped to think about the conceptual string that ties the album together, I was distracted by the idea of getting some warm folksy songs from my favorite songwriter of all time.
But then I got it. I mean, I think I got it. We’ll see soon enough.
I thought “damn, how curious, she’s choosing to bring up tradition right now”. Since the pandemic started, folklore is in dangeour. Communities are in danger. A sense of homogeneity is missing. We’re nostalgic but we can’t seem to look behind, we’re too worried about the new normal and the future.
Folklore brings people together. I think it works like a river, water can only go forward but the path is there. Our stories provide values that bring us together. And when uncertainty hits us right on the face and the system is cracking in front of your eyes, we realize we need to build something new, better. In order to do so, we can’t just look at the present. We need to take a look at the path we’ve been following, too. Wonder where and when did things go wrong. Appreciate the traditions we’ve lost and need to get back.
The nature aesthetic doesn’t seem random to me as we’re facing a global climate crisis.
Nothing is random when it comes to her.
I think Taylor is trying to make us sit down and collect the bests parts of tradition. Build a new one. Build solidarity. Bring a sense of cohesion between us in times of social distancing.
Am I wrong? @taylorswift @taylornation
