Free Dingbat Font Book For Dinkuses

I love dingbats. When typesetting, these little guys are so so useful. They can be applied as scene dividers (dinkuses), ornaments for headers/foots, borders/frames for chapter titles, flourishes for title pages, etc. I prefer working with dingbats over images, because, since a dingbat is just another font, it can be easily added and adjusted using paragraph styles or the normal font settings. Below the break are some examples of how I've used dingbats. So I love dingbats. But I hate sorting through them to find that one perfect vintage looking line to use. Thus, I threw this sample book together in a single morning so I could see all the dingbat options I had more easily. For the file, I wanted to make the dingbats large and easy to see, and wanted to be able to pick up a page to compare one font to another. As such, this font 'book' is formatted for regular letter paper, not my usual half letter folio.

^I don't normally add decorations around page numbers, but in this case I thought the flourishes worked well to compliment the whimsical nature of the book.

Anyway, these are just some of the ways I've used dingbats. Dingbats are great, they're easy to work with, and have a ton of uses for typesetting.

Free Blue Fairy Book (Font Sampler)

Once upon a time, there was a typeset. It was free typeset #45, and it was both a book most fair and a font sampler most helpful... Presenting free typeset #45: The Blue Fairy Book (Font Sampler Edition). It is sized for half letter (letter folio), and contains the complete fairy tale text edited by Andrew Lang, while also showcasing 41 different body fonts. It's available in my public domain books library here, and also in my typesetting resources folder here. There is a black and white alternate version available as well! Each chapter/fairy tale is a different font, and the font names are listed in the table of contents and beneath each chapter heading. This was inspired by something I saw @teleportbooks do with their drabbles (they have so many great ideas). The fonts I used are all serif fonts (thank you again to everyone that voted on the poll!), and each has an italics variant form (an important requisite for most body text). All the fonts except for Californian FB and Georgia can be found on googlefonts for free. Californian FB and Georgia slipped through cuz I just adore them so much, and they're usually found included for free in Office apps.

Also, I had so much fun making the collages for the fairies on the title page! The fairy art is from canva, and I 'colored' them in by adding William Morris patterns underneath (William Morris images from rawpixel).

So, continuing off my last post, here's a quick and dirty font sampler book I've made for body fonts. Uh, please note, some of these fonts were included tongue in cheek ( <.< side eyes comic sans >.>).

Typesetting Resources - Google Drive

Body fonts are the main font in a typeset. Sometimes, I use the same font for the body as I do for the chapter titles and headers, in order to contrast against a really fancy drop cap. Body fonts are very important to any typeset, as the body font is what the reader is going to be staring at 99% of the time (that ol' objectifying reader gaze, ya pervs). Personally, I like to use the IM FELL series for most of my typesets. The IM FELL fonts have a very old, rustic, hand printed feel to them with their irregular edges, while still maintaining readability. For texts with a more modern or sci fi feel to them, I like to use Crimson. Crimson has wonderful capitals and is very crisp to look at. For texts that are in between or don't quite fit those themes, I like to use EB Garamond or Baskerville, which are both found a lot in published books. I've also seen a lot of other typesetters use Alegreya and Georgia as well. Font size, leading, page size, and margins also play a role in what font to use. Some fonts work well at tiny sizes, some work well more leading, others less, etc. Best way to find what you like is to play around and do some print tests.
